Chapter 5: The Name Hidden in Her Phone
The airport café was almost empty by midnight.
The lights above us flickered softly.
Most travelers had already left.
But our family’s secrets had just arrived.
Mateo stared at Vanessa.
“Why do you have my father’s contact?””
Vanessa said nothing.
“Answer me.””
Her eyes moved toward me.
Then away.
“I can explain.””
“Everyone keeps saying that,” Mateo said.
“Nobody ever actually explains.””
I watched my son.
For the first time that day, he wasn’t avoiding conflict.
He was facing it.
Vanessa folded her arms.
“It’s not what you think.””
“Then tell me what it is.””
She looked angry now.
Fear had turned into anger.
“I saved his old number.””
Mateo frowned.
“My father’s number?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because…”
She stopped.
That pause said everything.
Because there was something she didn’t want to say.
Mateo stood.
“Because what?””
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“Because your father contacted me before we got married.””
The words hit like a storm.
I felt the air leave my lungs.
“My father was dead.””
“No.””
Mateo froze.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“He wasn’t dead when he contacted me.””
My hands trembled.
“That’s impossible.””
My husband had passed away years before Mateo married Vanessa.
Everyone knew.
The doctors knew.
The family knew.
“Vanessa,” I whispered, “what are you talking about?””
She looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw something beneath her cruelty.
Regret.
“I found messages.””
“From who?””
She looked at Mateo.
“From your father.””
Mateo shook his head.
“No.””
“He had another email account.””
“No.””
“He sent me messages before the wedding.””
My son stepped back.
“What kind of messages?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Messages about your mother.””
The words felt like a knife.
Me.
She was talking about me.
“What did he say?”” Mateo asked.
She hesitated.
Then she opened her phone.
“I saved them.””
My heart pounded.
Mateo took the phone.
He read.
His expression changed line by line.
I couldn’t see everything.
Only pieces.
My name.
Money.
The house.
A warning.
Then Mateo looked at me.
“Mom…”
I waited.
“What is this?””
I didn’t know.
I truly didn’t know.
He handed me the phone.
The message was from an old account.
The sender name was my late husband.
The words were short.
“Elena thinks she can control everything because she paid for everything. Make sure Mateo understands where the money goes.””
My hands went numb.
“That isn’t real.””
Vanessa whispered:
“I thought you knew.””
I looked at her.
“You believed this?””
“I didn’t know what to believe.””
“Then why marry my son?””
She looked away.
And that was the question she could not answer.
Mateo sat down slowly.
Everything had changed.
The vacation.
The humiliation.
The second room.
The lies.
They were all connected to something much older.
Something hidden.
Then his phone received another notification.
A new email.
He opened it.
His face turned pale.
“Mom.””
“What?””
He looked at me.
“It’s from the same account.””
Impossible.
His father had been gone for years.
Mateo opened the message.
Only one sentence appeared.
“I know what Vanessa did at the airport.””
Nobody moved.
Then another line appeared.
“Ask your mother why she never told you the truth about your father’s last year.””
I stared at the screen.
Because suddenly the question was no longer about who paid for a vacation.
It was about a secret I had buried for eight years.
May you like
And somehow…
someone had just dug it back up.
