Chapter 6: The Secret Her Grandfather Buried

Danielle read the message from Daniel three times before she could bring herself to answer.

*Your husband's mother prepared the forged guardianship document. But she wasn't acting alone. We found an older trust agreement, and there's a name in it that I think you need to see.*

She looked toward the nursery.

Olivia was sleeping peacefully.

Outside, rain tapped against the windows, and the lights of Chicago shimmered across the wet streets.

Danielle called Daniel.

"Tell me what you found.""

"We need to meet in person.""

"Daniel, please.""

He sighed.

"Your grandfather established the Whitmore Legacy Trust twenty-three years ago. At the time, he appointed three people to oversee it.""

"Grandfather, Margaret Ellis, and my mother?""

"Correct. But there was a fourth person.""

Danielle frowned.

"Who?""

"Your father.""

Her fingers tightened around the phone.

"My father died when I was eight.""

"I know.""

"Then why would he be involved in a trust established fifteen years later?""

"He wasn't. The document was amended twenty-three years ago, shortly before your parents separated.""

Danielle sat down.

"What does that mean?""

"It means your father never died.""

For several seconds, the only sound in the room was the rain.

Danielle finally whispered, "That's impossible.""

"Your grandfather believed it was safer for your father to disappear.""

"Why?""

"That's what we're trying to establish.""

Danielle ended the call and stared at the wall.

Her father, Thomas Whitmore, had supposedly died in a boating accident off the coast of Maine.

She remembered the funeral.

She remembered the black dress her mother had made her wear.

She remembered asking why there wasn't an open casket.

Her grandfather had knelt beside her and said, "Sometimes, sweetheart, we have to say goodbye without seeing someone one last time.""

She had cried for weeks.

Now she was being told that the goodbye might have been a lie.

The next morning, Danielle arrived at Daniel's office with Olivia and Rachel.

Daniel was waiting with Margaret Ellis and a large cardboard archive box.

He removed an old photograph.

A young man stood beside Edward Whitmore outside a summer house.

Danielle recognized him immediately.

Her father.

Thomas.

He looked younger than she remembered, but his smile was unmistakable.

"Where was this taken?"" she asked.

"Lake Michigan," Daniel replied.

"Twenty-two years ago.""

Danielle touched the photograph.

"Why did everyone tell me he was dead?""

Margaret Ellis spoke gently.

"Your father discovered that someone was attempting to divert money from the family estate. He confronted the person responsible. Shortly afterward, he received threats.""

"From whom?""

Margaret looked at Daniel.

He answered.

"Your grandmother's brother, Charles.""

Danielle frowned.

"My great-uncle?""

"Yes. Charles Whitmore had been managing several family investments. He was suspected of transferring money into private accounts.""

"Was he ever arrested?""

"No. He left the country.""

Daniel placed another document on the table.

"Your grandfather believed Thomas was in danger. He arranged for him to disappear while the investigation continued.""

Danielle shook her head.

"So my father has been alive all these years?""

"We have evidence that he was alive at least six months ago.""

Her voice broke.

"Where is he now?""

Daniel hesitated.

"We don't know.""

Rachel placed a hand on her shoulder.

Danielle looked down at the documents.

Then she noticed something.

A signature.

Thomas Whitmore.

Beside it was another name.

*Margaret Carter.*

Michael's mother.

Danielle looked up.

"Why is his mother's name here?""

Daniel pulled out a second file.

"Because Margaret Carter was previously employed by your grandfather's estate.""

Danielle felt a chill.

"Doing what?""

"She worked in the accounting department for approximately eighteen months.""

"Before Michael and I met?""

"Yes.""

Danielle stared at the paper.

"You're telling me my mother-in-law knew about my inheritance before I married her son?""

Daniel nodded.

"And she appears to have known about the trust's safeguards.""

Across town, Margaret Carter sat in the private dining room of a luxury hotel.

Michael paced beside the window.

"You told me the document was legitimate.""

Margaret stirred her coffee.

"It was prepared using the correct legal template.""

"That's not what I asked.""

She placed her spoon down.

"Michael, lower your voice.""

He turned.

"Danielle knows about the guardianship application.""

Margaret didn't react.

"Then you should have been more careful.""

Michael laughed bitterly.

"More careful? You were the one who told me to get the hospital records.""

"And you did.""

"Now she's got lawyers investigating everything!""

Margaret looked at him.

"Do you think I don't know?""

Michael stopped pacing.

"What?""

"Do you think I haven't received calls from Daniel Brooks?""

Michael stared.

"You spoke to him?""

"He called this morning.""

"What did you say?""

"Nothing.""

Michael rubbed his face.

"Mother, you need to understand. If this goes criminal, we're both finished.""

Margaret leaned back.

"Not necessarily.""

She opened her handbag and removed a small envelope.

Inside was an old photograph.

Michael looked at it.

A young Thomas Whitmore stood beside Edward.

Michael frowned.

"Who's that?""

"Danielle's father.""

"I know who he is.""

"Then you should know he isn't dead.""

Michael stared at her.

"What?""

Margaret placed the photograph on the table.

"Your grandfather-in-law made a mistake when he thought he could hide the past forever.""

Michael picked up the photograph.

"Why are you showing me this?""

"Because Thomas has the original trust amendment.""

Michael's expression changed.

"Where?""

Margaret smiled faintly.

"That's what we're going to find out.""

That evening, Danielle returned home to find an unfamiliar envelope beneath the front door.

There was no return address.

Inside was a single handwritten note.

Your grandfather wasn't protecting you from your father.

He was protecting your father from the people who wanted to use you.

Beneath the note was a photograph.

Danielle stared at it.

It showed a man standing outside a small house surrounded by pine trees.

The man's hair was gray.

His shoulders were slightly bent.

But there was no mistaking his face.

Thomas Whitmore.

On the back, someone had written an address.

A small coastal town in Maine.

Danielle called Daniel.

He answered immediately.

"I have something," she whispered.

She sent him the photograph.

A moment later, her phone rang again.

"Danielle, don't go there alone.""

"That's my father.""

"I know.""

"I've spent twenty-three years believing he was dead.""

"I understand.""

"No, Daniel. You don't.""

Her voice trembled.

"I want to see him.""

Daniel was silent.

Then he said, "There's something else you should know.""

"What?""

"The person who sent you that photograph has also contacted Michael.""

Danielle looked at the note again.

"Who?""

Daniel's answer was quiet.

"Charles Whitmore.""

And for the first time, Danielle understood that the battle over her inheritance had begun long before Michael Carter entered her life.

And Olivia's birth had finally given them one.
