Chapter 4: The Woman Behind the Forgery
Danielle sat in the nursery for nearly twenty minutes after Daniel ended the call.
She didn't move.
She didn't turn on the television.
She didn't even notice that Olivia had fallen asleep against her shoulder.
Her mother had been dead for eleven years.
How could she possibly be involved in anything Michael had done?
At 9:15 that evening, Daniel arrived at the house.
He carried a large envelope and looked as though he hadn't slept.
Danielle opened the door.
"Tell me exactly what you meant.""
Daniel stepped inside.
"I think there's been a misunderstanding.""
"Then explain it.""
He placed the envelope on the dining table.
"Your mother, Elizabeth Whitmore, established a separate investment company before she died.""
Danielle frowned.
"I know. She had a small portfolio.""
"Not as small as you think.""
Daniel opened the envelope.
Inside were several corporate records.
"Your mother created a holding company called Whitmore Legacy Partners. It was intended to protect certain family assets from being divided or transferred without proper authorization.""
Danielle stared at the documents.
"What does that have to do with Michael?""
Daniel pointed to a name.
"Michael Carter became an authorized representative of the company three years ago.""
Danielle's stomach tightened.
"Why?""
"Your mother had included a provision allowing a future family representative to assist with administration.""
"But Michael wasn't part of the family when she created it.""
"Correct. However, the authorization was added later, after your marriage.""
Danielle sat down.
"Who approved it?""
Daniel looked at her.
"Your grandfather.""
She stared.
"Grandfather approved Michael?""
"Yes. At the time, he believed Michael was trustworthy.""
Danielle looked away.
For years, she had imagined that her grandfather had always known something about people that she didn't.
Now she realized he had also made mistakes.
"Did Michael have access to the company?""
"Limited access. He could prepare financial documents, but he couldn't approve major transfers independently.""
"Then how did he get around that?""
Daniel opened another folder.
"He appears to have used a power of attorney document.""
Danielle frowned.
"I never gave him one.""
Daniel nodded.
"That's the problem.""
He placed a copy in front of her.
The document carried a date from four months earlier.
Danielle looked at the signature.
It was hers.
Again.
But this time, she noticed something different.
The signature was identical to the one on the Michigan property transfer.
Same shape.
Same spacing.
Same unusual curve at the end of her surname.
It was not a genuine signature.
It was a copy.
"Who witnessed this?"" she asked.
Daniel pointed to the bottom.
A name appeared.
*Vanessa Reed.*
Danielle slowly raised her eyes.
"So Vanessa witnessed a document she knew was forged?""
"That's what it appears to show.""
"Why?""
Daniel closed the folder.
"Because she stood to benefit from the transfer.""
The following morning, Vanessa woke up in the penthouse Michael had rented for her.
The apartment overlooked Lake Michigan.
Floor-to-ceiling windows reflected the pale morning light, and a bottle of expensive champagne sat unopened on the kitchen counter.
She was supposed to be celebrating.
Instead, she was furious.
Michael had not called her once since the marina.
When she finally reached him, he answered after the sixth ring.
"What?""
"Good morning to you too.""
"I'm busy.""
"With what? Losing your company?""
He exhaled sharply.
"Vanessa, I told you not to call me about business.""
"Then let's talk about the money you promised me.""
Silence.
"Michael?""
"What money?""
Vanessa laughed.
"Don't insult me.""
He lowered his voice.
"We'll discuss everything later.""
"No. We agreed I'd receive five million dollars when the Michigan property was transferred.""
"That agreement is no longer possible.""
"Why?""
"Because Danielle found out.""
Vanessa's voice rose.
"Then fix it!""
Michael slammed a drawer shut.
"Do you think I haven't been trying?""
Vanessa looked toward the bedroom.
Her suitcase was still unpacked.
She had imagined moving into this apartment as the beginning of a new life.
Instead, she was beginning to wonder whether she had attached herself to a man who couldn't deliver anything he promised.
"Michael, I have copies of the documents.""
He went silent.
"What copies?""
"The ones I witnessed.""
"Where are they?""
"Safe.""
His voice became dangerously quiet.
"Vanessa, listen to me. You need to destroy them.""
She smiled.
"Why?""
"Because if those documents become public, we're both in trouble.""
"Then perhaps you should remember that I didn't create them.""
Michael ended the call.
Vanessa stared at her phone.
Then she opened a drawer and removed a small black notebook.
Inside were dates, account numbers, and handwritten instructions.
She had been keeping records.
Not because she cared about Danielle.
Not because she suddenly felt guilty.
Because Vanessa had always understood something Michael hadn't.
A man who betrayed his wife for money could eventually betray his mistress for the same reason.
At noon, Danielle met Daniel and Margaret at a private conference room.
The atmosphere was tense.
Daniel had brought a forensic accountant named Samuel Price.
Samuel was a quiet man in his late fifties who spoke slowly and examined every document twice.
He placed a spreadsheet on the table.
"Mrs. Carter, we've traced approximately six million dollars in questionable transfers.""
Danielle frowned.
"Six million?""
"Yes.""
"How much remains?""
Samuel looked at Daniel.
"That's difficult to establish until we finish tracing the offshore accounts.""
Danielle looked at the figures.
"What about the money from my grandfather's estate?""
"Most of the original inheritance remains protected," Samuel explained.
"But several assets have been exposed to unauthorized transfers.""
"Can they be recovered?""
"Potentially.""
She looked at Daniel.
"Then recover them.""
Daniel nodded.
"We're also preparing a temporary injunction.""
Samuel turned another page.
"There's something else.""
Danielle waited.
"The company paid Vanessa Reed approximately $780,000 over the past eighteen months.""
Danielle stared.
"For what?""
"Consulting services, marketing contracts, and property management.""
"Does she work in those fields?""
Samuel gave a small shake of his head.
"Not according to the records.""
Margaret leaned forward.
"There's a more troubling payment.""
She pointed to a transaction.
"Forty-five thousand dollars was transferred to a private medical consulting company.""
Danielle's face tightened.
"Why?""
Samuel looked uncomfortable.
"The company appears to have requested copies of your hospital records.""
The room fell silent.
Danielle felt something rise in her chest.
Not fear.
Not sadness.
Anger.
Cold, steady anger.
"Can we prove Michael authorized it?""
Samuel nodded.
"There's an email trail.""
Daniel placed his hand on the table.
"Danielle, I need you to understand that this is no longer just a divorce matter.""
"I understand.""
"Some of these transactions may constitute criminal conduct.""
"Then let the authorities investigate.""
Daniel studied her.
"Are you certain?""
She looked at him.
"Michael didn't hesitate to humiliate me in front of strangers. He didn't hesitate to steal from our daughter. Why should I hesitate to protect her?""
Nobody answered.
That afternoon, Michael received an unexpected visitor.
Vanessa arrived at his office without an appointment.
His receptionist tried to stop her.
"Mr. Carter is in a meeting.""
Vanessa pushed past her.
"Then he can end it.""
She opened his office door.
Michael looked up.
"Are you out of your mind?""
Vanessa closed the door.
"Where's my money?""
He stood.
"Get out.""
"Not until you answer me.""
Michael walked around his desk.
"You're making a scene.""
She laughed.
"That's rich coming from the man who abandoned his wife at a marina.""
He grabbed her handbag and threw it onto the sofa.
"Listen to me. Everything is frozen.""
"Not everything.""
"Almost everything.""
Vanessa folded her arms.
"Then I want what you promised.""
Michael stared at her.
"I don't have it.""
"Then I'll tell Danielle everything.""
His expression changed.
"You already told her enough.""
"No, Michael. You don't understand. I have the original emails.""
He moved closer.
"Give them to me.""
"No.""
"Vanessa.""
She took a small envelope from her handbag.
"These are copies of the original transfer instructions. They show that you approved every payment.""
Michael's face went pale.
"Where did you get those?""
"Your office.""
"You stole company documents?""
She smiled.
"I learned from the best.""
Michael reached for the envelope.
Vanessa pulled it away.
"Don't.""
He stopped.
For several seconds, they stared at each other.
Then Vanessa said quietly, "I want three million dollars.""
Michael laughed.
"You've lost your mind.""
"Perhaps. But I still have the evidence.""
He pointed at the door.
"Get out.""
Vanessa picked up her handbag.
"Enjoy your meeting tomorrow.""
She opened the door.
Then she turned back.
"Oh, Michael?""
"What?""
"You should ask your wife about the recording.""
She smiled.
"Because I don't think you've heard the worst part yet.""
That evening, Danielle was putting Olivia to bed when Daniel called.
"We have a problem.""
She closed the nursery door gently.
"What happened?""
"Vanessa has approached the company.""
"Why?""
"She's demanding money in exchange for the documents she possesses.""
Danielle closed her eyes.
"So she's blackmailing him.""
"Essentially.""
"Does she have evidence?""
"Yes. And apparently, she has something else.""
"What?""
Daniel paused.
"An email sent by Michael to the hospital records department.""
Danielle's stomach tightened.
"What does it say?""
"It requests information about your delivery, your medication, and your psychological evaluation.""
She leaned against the wall.
"I never had a psychological evaluation.""
"Exactly.""
Daniel continued.
"The email also requests a copy of a document you supposedly signed before Olivia was born.""
"What document?""
"A temporary guardianship authorization.""
Danielle felt the blood drain from her face.
"Michael wanted guardianship?""
"That's what the email suggests.""
She looked through the nursery doorway.
Olivia was sleeping beneath her soft pink blanket.
Her tiny hand rested beside her cheek.
Danielle covered her mouth.
Then she whispered the question she had been afraid to ask.
"Was he planning to take my daughter?""
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
May you like
When he finally spoke, his voice was careful.
"Danielle, I think we need to prepare for the possibility.""
