Chapter 3: The Assistant Who Knew Too Much

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Rebecca stood near the door, clutching her handbag as though she might need to run.

Danielle looked at her.

"What do you mean, make me disappear?""

Rebecca shook her head.

"I don't know exactly what he meant. I swear.""

Daniel pulled out a chair.

"Sit down, Rebecca.""

She remained standing.

"Michael said you were unstable. He said you were going to have some kind of breakdown after the baby was born.""

Danielle felt her throat tighten.

"Why would he say that?""

"Because he wanted people to believe you weren't capable of managing your inheritance.""

Margaret exchanged a glance with Daniel.

Rebecca continued.

"He told me that if you challenged the transfers, he would use your medical records to prove you were emotionally unfit.""

Danielle stared at her.

"What medical records?""

Rebecca hesitated.

"Your hospital records.""

The room seemed to tilt.

Danielle remembered the difficult delivery.

She remembered the emergency surgery, the blood loss, and the days spent recovering in the hospital.

Michael had been there for only a few hours.

He had complained about the uncomfortable chairs, taken several phone calls, and left before midnight.

Now she understood why he had asked so many questions about her medication and the discharge paperwork.

"Did he access my records?"" she asked.

Rebecca nodded.

"I saw an email.""

Daniel immediately wrote something down.

"Who sent it?""

"Michael asked the hospital's records department for a copy. He said it was for insurance purposes.""

"Was it?""

Rebecca shook her head.

"No.""

Danielle closed her eyes.

Her husband had not only betrayed her marriage.

He had been preparing to use the most vulnerable moment of her life against her.

"Why are you telling me this now?"" she asked.

Rebecca looked down.

"Because I found out what he was planning next.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Tell us.""

Rebecca took a small flash drive from her handbag.

"He wanted me to delete these files.""

Daniel accepted it.

"What files?""

"Emails. Transfer instructions. Voice recordings. Everything related to the property transactions.""

"And you didn't?""

Rebecca shook her head.

"No.""

"Why?""

Rebecca looked at Danielle.

"Because I have a little girl too.""

Her eyes filled.

"My daughter is seven. Her father left us when she was three. I know what it feels like to have someone decide that your family doesn't matter anymore.""

Danielle said nothing.

Rebecca continued.

"When Michael started talking about Olivia like she was an inconvenience, I couldn't do it anymore.""

She swallowed.

"He called her a financial complication.""

Danielle's hand tightened around the back of the chair.

"What?""

Rebecca looked ashamed.

"He said the baby had ruined his timing.""

A long silence followed.

Then Danielle asked the question she had been avoiding.

"What did he plan to do to me?""

Rebecca looked at Daniel.

He nodded gently.

"Tell her.""

Rebecca took a breath.

"He was planning to transfer the remaining assets into Vanessa's company. Then he wanted to file for divorce and claim you were suffering from postpartum psychological problems.""

Danielle's face went cold.

"Was he planning to take Olivia?""

Rebecca hesitated.

"He said he'd use the situation to obtain temporary control over the family finances. He wanted to make sure you couldn't challenge him.""

Daniel closed his notebook.

"Rebecca, this is extremely serious.""

"I know.""

"Do you have evidence of these statements?""

She nodded.

"Some of the conversations were recorded.""

Daniel looked surprised.

"How?""

Rebecca gave a small, nervous laugh.

"Michael talks too much when he thinks nobody important is listening.""

An hour later, Daniel had copied the files.

He played the first recording.

Michael's voice filled the office.

"Vanessa, I need you to understand something. Danielle has no idea how much money is sitting in that trust.""

Vanessa's voice followed.

"Then why don't you just take it?""

"Because her grandfather made everything complicated.""

"You're supposed to be a billionaire, Michael. How difficult can one woman be?""

Michael laughed.

"She's not difficult. She's predictable.""

Danielle stared at the speaker.

"Predictable?""

Michael continued.

"She trusts everyone. She believes that if you tell her something enough times, she'll eventually convince herself it's true.""

Vanessa laughed.

"And the baby?""

Michael sighed.

"That's the problem.""

Danielle felt her stomach turn.

"What problem?""

"Olivia means I have to be careful. Danielle is more emotional now. If I push too hard, she'll become suspicious.""

Vanessa's voice sharpened.

"Then stop waiting.""

"I need the final property transfer.""

"When?""

"After the next board meeting.""

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Danielle stared at the table.

She could hear her own breathing.

For five years, she had defended Michael to friends and family.

When he missed birthdays, she said he was busy.

When he canceled vacations, she said he was under pressure.

When he stopped coming home at night, she told herself marriage required patience.

And while she was making excuses, he had been planning how to take her money and leave her with nothing.

Daniel paused the recording.

"There's another file.""

He clicked it.

Michael's voice returned.

"Once the transfer is complete, we'll have enough to move the money offshore.""

Vanessa asked, "And Danielle?""

"She'll have the house and whatever settlement I decide to give her.""

"You're not worried she'll fight?""

Michael laughed.

"She won't.""

"How do you know?""

"Because she's spent five years being afraid of losing me.""

A pause.

Then Michael added something that made Danielle's blood run cold.

"Besides, if she becomes difficult, I'll make sure everyone knows she isn't fit to raise Olivia.""

The recording stopped.

Danielle slowly stood.

"Turn it off.""

Daniel did.

She walked to the window.

Outside, people were crossing the street beneath the bright morning sky.

She pressed a hand against her mouth.

She wanted to scream.

She wanted to throw something.

She wanted to call Michael and ask how he could possibly look at their daughter and still speak about her as though she were an obstacle.

Instead, she took a deep breath.

Then another.

When she turned around, her eyes were dry.

"What happens now?""

Daniel closed the laptop.

"First, we preserve every piece of evidence. Second, we file for emergency protection of the assets. Third, we notify the relevant authorities about the suspected forgery and fraudulent transfers.""

"And Michael?""

"Michael will receive formal notice.""

Danielle nodded.

"Good.""

That evening, Michael arrived at the house.

Danielle was feeding Olivia in the living room.

He walked in carrying a bouquet of white roses.

For a moment, she thought he might have come to apologize.

Then he placed the flowers on the table.

"Can we talk?""

Danielle didn't look up.

"What about?""

"Us.""

She continued feeding Olivia.

"There is no us.""

Michael pulled out a chair.

"Don't be dramatic.""

She finally looked at him.

"Is that what you call it when your wife discovers you have a girlfriend?""

He rubbed his jaw.

"I made mistakes.""

"How many?""

"Danielle.""

"Five years' worth?""

Michael sighed.

"Vanessa was a mistake.""

Danielle almost laughed.

"Was the forged signature a mistake too?""

His expression changed.

"What?""

"The fake property transfer. Was that a mistake?""

He stared at her.

Then he slowly stood.

"Who told you?""

"Does it matter?""

Michael moved closer.

"Listen carefully. You don't understand how complicated the business is.""

"I understand perfectly.""

"No, you don't. There are investors. Loans.

Contracts. People depending on me.""

"And apparently a girlfriend depending on you too.""

"Don't bring Vanessa into this.""

Danielle placed the bottle on the table.

"Michael, you brought Vanessa into our marriage. You brought her into our finances. You brought her into our daughter's life before Olivia even had a chance to open her eyes.""

He looked toward the baby.

For the first time, he seemed uncomfortable.

"Can I hold her?""

Danielle studied him.

"You can wash your hands first.""

His jaw tightened.

"I'm her father.""

"Then start behaving like one.""

Michael walked to the kitchen.

While he was gone, Danielle's phone vibrated.

A message from Daniel.

*Emergency asset protection application filed. The Michigan property transfer is now under investigation. Do not sign anything Michael gives you.*

She read it twice.

Then she looked toward the kitchen.

Michael returned, drying his hands.

"Give her to me.""

Danielle carefully passed Olivia into his arms.

For a few seconds, he held the baby awkwardly.

Olivia opened her eyes.

Michael looked down at her.

"She's beautiful," he murmured.

Danielle watched him.

"She looks like your grandfather," he added.

The words surprised her.

Michael had never shown much interest in family history.

"Do you remember what my grandfather said at our wedding?"" she asked.

Michael shifted the baby.

"Something about happiness?""

"He said a man's character wasn't measured by what he promised when everyone was watching. It was measured by what he did when nobody was looking.""

Michael's expression hardened.

"Are we really doing this again?""

Danielle took Olivia back.

"No.""

She stood.

"We're not doing anything again.""

Michael stared at her.

"You're making a mistake.""

She looked at him.

"That's what you keep telling me.""

He grabbed his jacket.

"Fine. If you want to turn this into a legal war, we'll have one.""

He reached the doorway, then stopped.

"One more thing.""

Danielle waited.

"Vanessa is moving into the penthouse.""

Danielle blinked.

"Congratulations.""

Michael frowned.

"That's it?""

"What would you like me to do? Send flowers?""

He stepped closer.

"You're going to regret humiliating me.""

Danielle looked directly into his eyes.

"No, Michael. I regret marrying you.""

He slammed the door.

Olivia began crying.

Danielle held her daughter against her chest and walked toward the nursery.

But before she reached the stairs, her phone rang.

Daniel.

She answered.

"Hello?""

"Danielle, I need you to sit down.""

Her heart dropped.

"What happened?""

"We examined the recording Rebecca provided.""

"And?""

"There is a second person involved in the property transfers.""

"Who?""

Daniel hesitated.

Then he said the name.

"Your mother.""

May you like

Danielle stopped walking.

Her mother had been dead for eleven years.
