Chapter 8: The Room Michael Locked Away
The old access code opened a room nobody knew existed.
Not even Luca.
That was the part that terrified him.
The security team searched the mansion first.
Nothing.
No broken windows.
No forced doors.
No signs of entry.
Only one thing was different.
A painting in the west hallway had been moved.
Behind it was a hidden keypad.
Luca stared.
“I’ve lived here my entire life.””
His voice was low.
“And I never knew this existed.””
Vanessa stood behind him.
“Michael did.””
Everyone looked at her.
“You knew?””
She looked ashamed.
“He showed me once.””
Rachel’s anger returned.
“You’re unbelievable.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
Rachel stepped closer.
“You keep saying you were protecting Luca. But every secret you kept hurt him.””
Vanessa looked down.
“I know.””
For once, she didn’t defend herself.
Luca entered the code.
The door opened.
Inside was a small room.
A private archive.
Boxes.
Documents.
Photographs.
Records.
Michael had been collecting evidence.
Against someone.
The walls were covered with notes.
Names.
Dates.
Connections.
And in the center of the room was a message.
Written in black ink.
“THE PERSON WHO BETRAYED ME WILL TRY TO CONTROL THE STORY.””
Luca stared.
“He knew.””
I walked closer.
“He knew someone would rewrite what happened.””
A box sat beneath the message.
Inside were financial records.
Emails.
And a recording device.
Luca pressed play.
Michael’s voice filled the room.
“If you’re listening to this, I’m probably gone.””
Rachel covered her mouth.
Ben held her hand.
Michael continued.
“I need Luca to understand something. The danger is not outside the family.””
A pause.
“The danger is someone who believes they deserve what belongs to us.””
The recording stopped.
Luca looked devastated.
Because he knew exactly what Michael meant.
Victor.
The man who had spent years beside him.
The man who knew every weakness.
Then another sound came from the hallway.
A phone vibrating.
Everyone turned.
A small phone sat on the floor outside the hidden room.
Not Michael’s phone.
A different one.
Luca picked it up.
There was one message.
“Stop searching.””
Another message appeared.
“You already know who did it.””
Then a photograph loaded.
It showed Victor.
Standing outside the mansion.
Taken less than five minutes earlier.
But Victor was supposed to be out of town.
Luca immediately called security.
No answer.
Rachel whispered:
“What’s happening?””
Luca looked at the phone.
May you like
Then at me.
“He’s inside.””
