Chapter 2: The Man Who Came Home Early
“Because I’m the one who what?””
Vanessa finished the sentence herself.
Her voice was sharp.
Too sharp.
Ben immediately went quiet.
Children learned quickly which adults were dangerous.
I hated that he already knew.
Luca looked between them.
“Ben.””
The boy stared at the floor.
Luca’s voice softened.
“Tell me.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Luca, he’s upset.””
Rachel shook her head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
She held her son’s shoulder.
“Let him speak.””
Vanessa’s expression tightened.
“You’re encouraging this?””
Rachel laughed quietly.
“No. I’m finally allowing someone to tell the truth.””
Luca didn’t answer.
He simply looked at Ben.
The room waited.
Finally, the boy lifted his head.
“She told my mom she needed to leave.””
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“Ben.””
“She said Mom was making things difficult.””
“Enough.””
“I heard her.””
Luca’s jaw tightened.
“What did she say?””
Ben looked at his uncle.
“She said Michael’s family needed to stop acting like they owned you.””
The silence afterward was painful.
Because Michael’s name always carried weight in that house.
Luca slowly turned toward Vanessa.
“Did you say that?””
Vanessa didn’t answer immediately.
That was the mistake.
Because silence was sometimes an answer.
“Luca,” she said finally, “you’re letting emotions control this.””
His expression hardened.
“No.””
He looked at her.
“I’m asking a question.””
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“We were discussing boundaries.””
“Boundaries?””
“Yes.””
“With my brother’s widow?””
“With your future.””
Rachel looked away.
That hurt more than shouting.
Because Vanessa wasn’t denying anything.
She believed she was right.
I had seen people like that before.
People who could hurt others while convincing themselves they were protecting something.
Luca looked at me.
“Emma.””
I straightened.
“Yes?””
“What happened tonight?””
Every instinct told me to be careful.
This was not my family.
This was not my fight.
But I remembered Rachel’s face.
I remembered Ben’s voice.
So I told the truth.
“Rachel was sitting near the windows. She wasn’t drinking alcohol.””
Vanessa interrupted.
“She’s mistaken.””
Luca raised his hand.
Just slightly.
Vanessa stopped.
I continued.
“She became upset after an argument with Vanessa.””
“What argument?””
I looked at Rachel.
She nodded.
“Tell him.””
So I did.
I explained the comments about Michael.
The seating arrangement.
The vacation conversation.
The accusation that Rachel had been drinking.
When I finished, nobody spoke.
Luca looked exhausted.
Not angry.
Exhausted.
Like he had just discovered a crack in a foundation he thought was solid.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You believe staff over me?””
Luca looked at her.
“No.””
A small smile appeared on her face.
Then he continued.
“I believe evidence.””
Her smile disappeared.
The next morning, I expected to be gone.
I expected someone from the mansion to call and tell me my things were packed.
Instead, Luca called me himself.
“Emma.””
I answered carefully.
“Yes?””
“Come back.””
I sat up.
“What?””
“I need to ask you something.””
I looked around my apartment.
The peeling paint.
The old furniture.
The bills sitting beside my coffee cup.
“About last night?””
“Yes.””
“Mr. Moretti—”
“Luca.””
I paused.
Nobody called him that.
Not employees.
Not outsiders.
“Luca.””
“Come back.””
I returned to the mansion an hour later.
But something was different.
The house felt colder.
Not because of the weather.
Because everyone knew something had broken.
Luca was waiting in his office.
A room filled with books, old photographs, and memories of a family that looked happier than it was.
He gestured toward a chair.
“Sit.””
I did.
He placed a folder on the desk.
“I need your help.””
I stared at it.
“With what?””
“Finding out how long this has been happening.””
My stomach tightened.
“What do you mean?””
He opened the folder.
Inside were photographs.
Emails.
Messages.
Documents.
All connected to Rachel.
“She’s been pushed away from family events.””
I looked through the pages.
“I thought you knew.””
“I knew some things.””
His voice lowered.
“I didn’t know the reason.””
I looked up.
“Vanessa didn’t want Rachel here.””
“No.””
He looked at the photograph of Michael.
“She wanted Michael erased.””
The words hung between us.
Then Luca’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“Who is it?””
He didn’t answer.
Because the name on the screen was enough.
Michael Moretti.
Dead for two years.
May you like
And somehow…
calling Luca’s phone.
