Chapter 5: The Woman In The Photograph

Vanessa came back the next morning.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Calm.

That scared me more.

People who knew they were losing usually shouted.

Vanessa walked into the mansion wearing a white coat and carrying a small handbag.

She looked like she was visiting friends.

Not facing destruction.

Luca placed the photograph on the table.

Her eyes moved toward it.

She didn’t pretend.

That was the first honest thing she did.

“You found it.””

Rachel whispered:

“You were with Michael.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Yes.””

The room froze.

“Why?”” Luca asked.

Vanessa sat down.

“Because Michael found out something.””

“What?””

She looked at him.

“Your family business wasn’t as clean as you thought.””

Luca’s face hardened.

“You’re lying.””

“No.””

She looked toward me.

“Ask Emma.””

I frowned.

“Why me?””

“Because you’re the only person here who understands what happened.””

I stepped back.

“I don’t understand anything.””

Vanessa smiled sadly.

“You understand people.””

I hated that she was right.

Because I had spent months watching.

Watching how she treated Rachel.

Watching how she controlled conversations.

Watching how she turned every room toward herself.

Luca leaned forward.

“What did Michael discover?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she said:

“He discovered someone inside the family was stealing from him.””

Rachel looked shocked.

“Who?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Instead, she reached into her bag.

She pulled out a document.

And placed it on the table.

Luca picked it up.

His expression changed.

Because the signature at the bottom belonged to someone he trusted.

Someone who had been in the mansion the entire time.

Someone who had attended the engagement dinner.

Someone who had watched Emma lose her job.

Then Luca looked at me.

“Emma.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

He turned the document around.

“This is why Vanessa wanted you gone.””

I stared at the name.

And suddenly, the entire night made sense.

The accusation.

The firing.

The humiliation.

It was never about Rachel being drunk.

It was never about an argument.

Vanessa wasn’t trying to protect her reputation.

She was trying to remove the one person who could expose what happened next.

Because written on the document was a name I knew.

A name from my own past.

And underneath it…

May you like

Michael Moretti’s final message appeared.

“Emma Carter knows the truth.””
