Chapter 9: The Last Lie
The officers reached the lake house shortly after midnight.
Jonathan's car was parked outside.
Sarah's was beside it.
But the house was empty.
The kitchen lights were on.
A coffee cup sat on the counter.
A half-eaten sandwich lay beside an open laptop.
And on the dining table was a photograph of Emily.
On the back, someone had written:
*One last family meeting.*
Detective Collins called me at 12:36 a.m.
"Mr. Carter, we've found evidence that Sarah and Jonathan were here recently.""
"Where are they?""
"We don't know yet.""
"Then keep looking.""
"We are.""
I sat beside Emily at the station.
She had fallen asleep with her head against my arm.
Her stuffed rabbit rested in her lap.
I gently brushed the hair away from her forehead.
"Everything will be okay, princess," I whispered.
She stirred.
"Are we going home?""
I swallowed.
"Yes.""
"To our old house?""
I looked at her.
"Would you like that?""
She nodded.
"I want my yellow bedroom.""
I smiled sadly.
"I remember.""
"And my pancakes.""
"I remember those too.""
She opened one eye.
"With the animal faces?""
"Especially those.""
She smiled and fell asleep again.
I looked toward Daniel.
He was speaking with Detective Collins.
The investigation had changed everything.
The recordings had exposed Sarah's coaching.
The financial documents suggested fraud.
The birth records had uncovered a hidden family history.
And Rachel had promised to provide the video that could finally prove I had been framed.
But Sarah was still missing.
And until she was found, Emily was not completely safe.
At 2:10 a.m., Daniel's phone rang.
He listened for several seconds.
Then he stood.
"It's Rachel.""
He put the call on speaker.
"Daniel?""
"Where are you?""
"At the bank. I have the documents.""
Detective Collins immediately stepped forward.
"Ms. Brooks, are you alone?""
"Yes.""
"Do not move. Officers are coming.""
Rachel took a shaky breath.
"I found the video.""
"Is it the original?""
"Yes.""
"What does it show?""
Rachel hesitated.
"Everything.""
Daniel looked at me.
Then Rachel continued.
"There's another recording too.""
"What recording?""
"A conversation between Jonathan and Sarah. They were arguing about the money.""
Detective Collins leaned closer.
"Can you describe it?""
Rachel's voice became quieter.
"Jonathan says Sarah has to make sure Michael is convicted. He says the trust transfer won't be approved otherwise.""
I stared.
Then Rachel added:
"But Sarah tells him she doesn't want to hurt Emily.""
I felt something twist inside my chest.
"What does Jonathan say?""
Rachel answered.
"He tells her Emily isn't the point. He says the child is just the key.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Did you hear anything about where they're going?""
"Yes.""
"Where?""
Rachel paused.
"An airport.""
Detective Collins immediately turned toward an officer.
"Check private aviation departures and nearby airports. Get the warrant team moving.""
I stood.
"Are they leaving the country?""
"We don't know yet," the detective replied.
Then Rachel spoke again.
"There's something else.""
Everyone went quiet.
"Jonathan has a second passport under a different name.""
Detective Collins asked for the name.
Rachel gave it.
The officers began moving.
The next hour was chaos.
Phone calls.
Reports.
Search requests.
And a growing fear that Jonathan might disappear before anyone could stop him.
At 3:27 a.m., Detective Collins received confirmation.
A private aircraft had been scheduled to depart from a small regional airport.
Two passengers were listed under different names.
One was a man matching Jonathan's description.
The other was a woman matching Sarah's.
I stood immediately.
"Let's go.""
Daniel grabbed his coat.
"We're going with the police.""
Emily was placed under the care of a female officer and a child advocate.
I kissed her forehead.
"I'll be back soon.""
She opened her eyes.
"Don't go away, Daddy.""
My throat tightened.
"I'm coming back.""
She reached for my hand.
"Promise?""
I squeezed her fingers.
"Promise.""
The drive to the airport felt endless.
The sky was beginning to turn gray.
A cold wind moved across the runway.
Police vehicles surrounded the small terminal.
The aircraft was still parked near the hangar.
Its engines were off.
An officer approached Detective Collins.
"They're inside.""
I stared at the plane.
Then the door opened.
Sarah stepped out.
She was wearing a dark coat.
Her hair was tied back.
She looked exhausted.
Jonathan appeared behind her carrying a leather briefcase.
For a moment, Sarah looked directly at me.
Our eyes met.
She stopped.
Jonathan noticed.
"Keep walking," he said.
Sarah didn't move.
Detective Collins raised her voice.
"Jonathan Reed! Step away from the aircraft!""
Jonathan glanced at the officers.
Then he smiled.
"What's this about?""
"You are being detained pending investigation.""
He laughed.
"On what grounds?""
Detective Collins held up the warrant.
"Financial fraud, unlawful concealment of a minor, and evidence related to a false criminal complaint.""
Sarah suddenly spoke.
"Jonathan, tell them.""
He turned toward her.
"Not now.""
"Tell them you said everything would be fine.""
"Sarah.""
"You said Michael would never find out!""
Jonathan grabbed her arm.
She pulled away.
I stepped forward.
"Don't touch her.""
Jonathan looked at me.
Then he smiled.
"Michael Carter. The hero finally arrives.""
I stared at him.
"You used my daughter.""
He shrugged.
"Your daughter is a very important little girl.""
"She's not yours.""
His expression hardened.
"Neither is Sarah.""
Sarah began crying.
"Stop it!""
Jonathan turned toward her.
"You should have listened.""
Detective Collins moved closer.
"Hands where I can see them.""
Jonathan slowly raised his hands.
But as the officers approached, he suddenly dropped the briefcase.
A folder slid across the runway.
Documents scattered in the wind.
One page landed near my shoes.
I picked it up.
It was a trust agreement.
My name appeared in the first paragraph.
So did Sarah's.
But the final page contained something I had never seen before.
A handwritten clause.
*In the event of Michael Carter's conviction, guardianship of Emily Carter shall be transferred to Jonathan Reed pending completion of the family trust settlement.*
I looked up.
"Why?""
Jonathan said nothing.
I held the document toward him.
"You planned to take her.""
He smiled faintly.
"I planned to secure what belonged to my family.""
Sarah looked at him.
"Emily doesn't belong to you!""
Jonathan's expression changed.
"Everything you have is because of me.""
"You're sick.""
He stepped toward her.
"You wouldn't even have a life if I hadn't come back.""
Sarah backed away.
Then she looked at me.
"Michael...""
I stared at her.
"Don't.""
She began crying harder.
"I was going to fix everything.""
"You framed me.""
"I know.""
"You took my money.""
"I know.""
"You made our daughter afraid of her own father.""
Sarah covered her mouth.
"I thought I could undo it.""
I looked at her.
"You don't get to undo six months of my daughter's nightmares with one apology.""
She lowered her head.
For the first time, she had no answer.
The officers placed Jonathan in handcuffs.
He didn't struggle.
But as he was led away, he turned toward me.
"You think you've won?""
I stared at him.
He smiled.
"Ask your wife why she really agreed to the plan.""
I turned toward Sarah.
She was shaking.
"What does he mean?""
Sarah closed her eyes.
Then she whispered:
"Because Jonathan told me you weren't Emily's biological father.""
The world seemed to stop.
I looked at her.
"What?""
Sarah began crying.
"He showed me a DNA report.""
I couldn't speak.
May you like
She looked directly at me.
"And I believed him.""
