Chapter 5: The Woman Who Finally Spoke
The next morning, Linda Carter disappeared.
Her phone went straight to voicemail.
Her apartment was empty.
Her car was gone.
And nobody at the courthouse had seen her.
Daniel called three times before noon.
No answer.
By two o'clock, he was pacing his office.
"Michael, this is becoming more complicated.""
I sat opposite him.
"She gave us the USB drive.""
"Yes.""
"She gave us the emails.""
"Yes.""
"Why would she disappear now?""
Daniel looked at the property agreement.
"Because she may have realized that the documents connect her to something much bigger.""
I stared at him.
"Do you think she helped Sarah?""
"I think we need to find out.""
I rubbed my face.
The red heart Emily had drawn on my cheek was long gone.
But I could still feel where the marker had touched my skin.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw her standing in that courtroom.
Her tiny hand holding the marker.
Her voice saying I was a good daddy.
I wondered whether she was safe.
I wondered whether she had been punished for speaking.
And I wondered how much more she had been forced to witness.
That afternoon, Daniel received an unexpected call.
It was from Sarah's attorney.
He wanted to discuss a possible agreement.
Daniel put the call on speaker.
"Mr. Brooks, my client is willing to withdraw certain claims.""
Daniel remained silent.
The attorney continued.
"In exchange, Mr. Carter would agree to a limited custody arrangement and waive any interest in the disputed financial assets.""
I leaned forward.
"What?""
Daniel raised one finger, telling me to wait.
"You're asking my client to surrender his property in exchange for withdrawing allegations that may already be contradicted by evidence?""
"I'm suggesting a practical resolution.""
Daniel's voice became colder.
"Your client accused a father of harming his child. We now have recordings that appear to show her coaching that child to make false statements. This is not a property negotiation.""
There was a pause.
Then the attorney said:
"Mr. Brooks, you should understand that the situation could become much worse for everyone involved.""
Daniel ended the call.
I stared at him.
"That was a threat.""
"Yes.""
"Then we're not settling.""
Daniel nodded.
"Good.""
For the first time in months, I felt certain about something.
I wasn't giving up my daughter.
I wasn't giving up the truth.
And I wasn't letting Sarah turn my silence into an admission of guilt.
Two hours later, the courthouse security desk called.
Linda had returned.
She was waiting in the lobby.
Daniel and I met her in a small conference room.
She looked terrified.
Her hair was uncombed. Her coat was buttoned incorrectly. She held a brown envelope against her chest.
"Linda, where have you been?"" Daniel asked.
She sat down.
"I needed to make sure I wasn't being followed.""
I leaned forward.
"Are you in danger?""
She looked at me.
"I don't know anymore.""
Daniel placed the property transfer agreement on the table.
"Your name appears as the notary.""
Linda closed her eyes.
"I know.""
"Did you notarize this document?""
She shook her head.
"No.""
"Did you authorize anyone to use your stamp?""
"No.""
I stared at her.
"Then how did your name get there?""
She opened the brown envelope.
Inside was a photograph of her notary stamp.
A copy of her identification.
And a handwritten statement.
"I found these in Sarah's desk," she said.
Daniel examined them.
"Someone copied your credentials.""
Linda nodded.
"Sarah asked me for copies of my identification months ago. She said she needed them for a property transaction involving the family.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"And you gave them to her?""
"I did.""
"Without asking what she needed them for?""
Linda started crying.
"I trusted my daughter.""
I looked away.
Those words were becoming familiar.
Everyone had trusted Sarah.
And she had used that trust like a weapon.
Linda pushed another document across the table.
"This is why I disappeared.""
Daniel picked it up.
It was an email printout.
The sender was Jonathan Reed.
The recipient was Sarah.
The subject line read:
*After Michael's conviction.*
Daniel began reading.
His expression changed.
"What?"" I asked.
He didn't answer immediately.
He read the message again.
Then he turned the page toward me.
The email contained instructions for transferring the remaining assets, closing the joint accounts, and moving Emily to another state.
But the final paragraph was the one that made my blood run cold.
Once the custody matter is resolved, we won't need to keep pretending this was about protecting Emily. The original agreement is enough. She can stay with Linda until everything is settled.
I looked up.
"Original agreement?""
Linda began shaking.
"There was another document.""
"What document?""
She pressed both hands against her face.
"Sarah told me she had signed something with Jonathan.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"What kind of agreement?""
Linda lowered her hands.
"A marriage agreement.""
I stared at her.
"Sarah was married to Jonathan?""
"Not legally. Not yet. But they had planned everything.""
I felt something inside me go numb.
She hadn't simply been having an affair.
She had been building a second life while dismantling the first.
"Where is the agreement?"" Daniel asked.
Linda hesitated.
"At my house.""
"Why?""
"Because Sarah asked me to keep it safe.""
I looked at her.
"Why would you agree to that?""
Linda's eyes filled with tears.
"Because she told me Michael was dangerous. She said she needed to protect Emily.""
I stood.
"Stop saying that.""
She flinched.
"Michael—"
"Stop pretending you were protecting my daughter while helping someone steal her father.""
The room went silent.
Linda lowered her head.
"I know.""
For a moment, I couldn't look at her.
Then Daniel spoke.
"Linda, we need that agreement.""
She nodded.
"I'll get it.""
But before she could stand, her phone vibrated.
She looked at the screen.
Her face drained of color.
"What is it?"" Daniel asked.
She didn't answer.
She turned the phone around.
A message had appeared from Sarah.
*I know what you gave Michael. If you tell him where the original is, you'll never see Emily again.*
I stared at the screen.
Linda's hands began shaking.
Daniel reached for the phone.
"Don't respond.""
Another message appeared.
This time, it was a photograph.
Emily.
Sitting on the floor of a bedroom.
Her red cardigan was folded beside her.
Her eyes were swollen from crying.
And in her hands was a piece of paper.
A drawing.
Three people holding hands beneath a yellow sun.
On the back of the photograph, Sarah had written:
*Tell Michael to stop, or Emily will learn what happens to people who betray their own family.*
I felt the room tilt.
"Where is my daughter?""
Linda started crying.
"I don't know.""
I grabbed the edge of the table.
"Where is she?""
Daniel stood immediately.
"We need to contact the authorities.""
But Linda suddenly shook her head.
"No.""
I turned toward her.
"What do you mean, no?""
She looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.
Pure terror.
"Michael, you don't understand. Sarah isn't the person you think she is.""
I stared at her.
"Then tell me who she is.""
Linda swallowed.
Then she opened the brown envelope again and removed one final document.
It was an old birth certificate.
Not Emily's.
Sarah's.
Linda placed it on the table.
And pointed to the section marked *Father's Name*.
The name printed there was:
*Jonathan Reed.*
I looked at her.
"What does this mean?""
Linda began to sob.
"Jonathan isn't just the man Sarah has been seeing.""
She leaned closer and whispered:
"He's her biological father.""
I couldn't move.
Daniel slowly lowered the document.
And then Linda said the words that changed everything.
"Michael, Jonathan has been planning this for more than twenty years. And Sarah was never supposed to leave you with Emily.""
May you like
She looked directly into my eyes.
"She was supposed to make sure you disappeared before you discovered who your daughter really is.""
