Chapter 7: The House Where Sarah Was Born

The police arrived twenty minutes later.

Daniel insisted that nobody go near the property without authorization.

I hated waiting.

Every second felt like another minute Emily was spending alone with people who had already proven they didn't care what frightened her.

The officers reviewed the photograph, the messages, and Linda's statement.

A detective named Rebecca Collins took charge.

She was in her early forties, with short brown hair and the kind of expression that suggested she had spent years listening to people lie.

"Mr. Carter, I need you to tell me everything about the messages.""

I handed her my phone.

She examined the photograph.

"Do you recognize this location?""

"No.""

"Does your wife?""

"I don't know.""

Linda stepped forward.

"I do.""

Detective Collins turned.

"How?""

"I gave birth to Sarah at the hospital next to that property. The building was later converted into a private residence.""

"Why would your daughter be there?""

Linda shook her head.

"Because Jonathan has been using it.""

Detective Collins studied her.

"Using it for what?""

Linda looked at me.

"I think he's been keeping something there.""

The detective made a note.

"Do you have keys?""

Linda nodded.

"One.""

She reached into her handbag and produced an old brass key.

It was attached to a faded blue ribbon.

"I kept it after the hospital closed.""

Detective Collins took it.

"We'll secure the location.""

I stepped forward.

"I want to come.""

"No.""

"That's my daughter.""

"And that's precisely why I don't want you walking into a potentially dangerous situation.""

I clenched my jaw.

"She thinks I've abandoned her.""

Detective Collins softened slightly.

"Then let's make sure the first person she sees is someone who can bring her home safely.""

The officers left.

Daniel and I waited at the station with Linda.

At 9:42 p.m., Detective Collins called.

"Mr. Carter?""

I stood.

"Is Emily there?""

"We're at the property.""

"Is she safe?""

A pause.

"We've located a child's belongings.""

My heart dropped.

"But no child?""

"Not yet.""

I grabbed the edge of the table.

"What does that mean?""

"We found evidence that someone has recently been staying there. We're searching the remaining rooms.""

I closed my eyes.

Then I heard a sound.

A faint voice.

"Michael?""

I looked at the phone.

"Emily?""

Detective Collins spoke again.

"Mr. Carter, stay where you are.""

Then the call ended.

I stared at the screen.

Daniel stood.

"What happened?""

"I heard her.""

He grabbed his coat.

"We're going.""

This time, he didn't argue.

We followed the police convoy to the property.

It was an old brick building surrounded by tall trees.

The windows were dark.

The front door stood open.

An officer approached us.

"Stay behind the line.""

I looked toward the entrance.

"Where's my daughter?""

Detective Collins appeared.

"We found her.""

My knees almost gave way.

"Is she okay?""

"She's physically safe. A medic is checking her now.""

I moved forward.

Then Emily appeared behind the detective.

She was holding the stuffed rabbit.

Her face crumpled when she saw me.

"Daddy!""

I dropped to my knees.

She ran toward me.

I wrapped my arms around her carefully.

"Oh, sweetheart.""

She buried her face against my neck.

"I thought you couldn't find me.""

My eyes filled.

"I told you I'd always find you.""

She started crying.

"Mommy said you didn't want me.""

I pulled back just enough to look at her.

"Listen to me, Emily. Nothing could ever make me stop wanting you.""

She touched my cheek.

"Your heart is gone.""

I laughed through my tears.

"Yes, baby. But I still remember it.""

She hugged me again.

For a few seconds, everything else disappeared.

Then Detective Collins approached.

"Mr. Carter, we need to speak with Emily's guardian.""

I looked at her.

"Where's Sarah?""

The detective's expression changed.

"She's not here.""

"Jonathan?""

"Neither is he.""

She glanced toward the building.

"But we found something.""

Inside, the house smelled of dust and old wood.

There were two bedrooms.

One had been arranged for a child.

A small bed.

A night-light.

A shelf full of picture books.

And a wall covered with photographs.

I stopped when I saw them.

Emily at the playground.

Emily eating ice cream.

Emily sitting beside Sarah.

Photographs I had never taken.

Photographs I had never seen.

On the opposite wall were pictures of Sarah as a child.

And beside them were photographs of Jonathan Reed.

One showed him holding a newborn baby.

The date was written underneath.

Twenty-nine years earlier.

I turned toward Detective Collins.

"What's this?""

She pointed toward a desk.

"We found documents suggesting the property was used to store family records.""

Daniel opened a folder.

Inside were medical reports.

Hospital records.

DNA test results.

And a handwritten letter.

The first page was dated shortly after Sarah's birth.

I read the opening sentence.

The child identified as Sarah is not the only surviving child from this delivery.

My stomach tightened.

I turned the page.

The letter described a medical emergency.

Two newborn babies.

One mother.

One biological father.

A mistake in the hospital records.

And a decision made without the mother's knowledge.

I looked at Linda.

She was crying silently.

"Is this real?""

She nodded.

"I think so.""

Daniel read the next page.

Then he looked up.

"Michael, there's a second child.""

I felt my heart pounding.

"Who?""

He pointed to the name written in the report.

*Baby B — Female — transferred to temporary care.*

No final adoption record was attached.

No death certificate.

No explanation.

Detective Collins approached.

"There's more.""

She handed me a small envelope.

Inside was a recent DNA report.

It compared Jonathan Reed with Emily Carter.

I looked at the first page.

The result was marked preliminary.

But the conclusion was clear enough to make my hands shake.

Jonathan was not Emily's biological father.

I let out a breath.

Then I looked at the next page.

It compared Sarah with the unidentified second child.

The relationship probability was extremely high.

Sarah had a twin sister.

A sister nobody had told her about.

And the final document contained a name.

*Rebecca Reed.*

I stared at it.

"Who is Rebecca?""

Linda shook her head.

"I don't know.""

Then Detective Collins spoke.

"Mr. Carter, we've just received a call from another department.""

I looked up.

"What?""

"They've identified Rebecca Reed.""

"Where is she?""

The detective hesitated.

"She's been living under a different surname for nearly thirty years.""

Daniel frowned.

"Why?""

Detective Collins handed him another sheet.

He read it.

Then his face changed.

"Michael.""

"What?""

He turned the document toward me.

The current legal name of Rebecca Reed was printed at the top.

*Rebecca Brooks.*

I stared.

Brooks.

Daniel's surname.

I turned toward my attorney.

He looked as shocked as I felt.

"Daniel?""

May you like

He swallowed.

"That's my wife.""
