Chapter 5: Two Cribs, One Missing Baby

The police officer stopped the recording.

Nobody spoke.

My father had gone completely still.

Vanessa was staring at the floor.

Hannah held Emily against her chest.

And I stood in the middle of that basement, realizing that the worst thing my family had done might not have happened behind the walls.

It might have happened in a hospital.

"What do you mean?"" I asked Vanessa.

She shook her head.

"Not here.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Where would you prefer? The kitchen? Our bedroom? The room where you've been hiding a little girl?""

"Ryan, please.""

"No more please.""

I stepped closer.

"What happened the night Lily was born?""

My father suddenly spoke.

"Nothing happened.""

I turned toward him.

"You don't get to answer for her.""

He looked at me with a familiar expression.

The expression he used whenever I questioned his authority.

"Son, you're making a terrible mistake.""

I stared at him.

"Stop calling me son.""

The police officer moved him farther down the corridor.

My father didn't resist this time.

Instead, he looked at Vanessa.

"Remember what we agreed.""

Vanessa's face went white.

I saw it.

That small reaction.

That immediate fear.

Whatever agreement they had made, she still believed he had power over her.

I turned toward the officer.

"Take him out of here.""

"Sir, we're going to need statements from everyone.""

"Then take him somewhere we can give them.""

The officer nodded.

He escorted my father toward the staircase.

But before disappearing around the corner, my father turned.

"Ryan?""

I didn't answer.

"You should ask your wife why the hospital gave her two discharge bracelets.""

Then he smiled.

"One for Lily. One for the baby she brought home.""

The door closed.

I stood frozen.

Vanessa began sobbing.

I looked at her.

"Two babies?""

She covered her face.

"Ryan, I can explain.""

"Then explain.""

She sat on the edge of the bed.

For a long time, she said nothing.

Finally, she reached into her handbag and pulled out a small envelope.

It was yellowed.

The hospital logo was printed in the upper corner.

I recognized the date.

The day Lily was born.

Vanessa placed it on the mattress.

"I kept this because I knew one day you'd find out.""

I opened it.

Inside were two hospital identification bands.

Both carried the same surname.

MORGAN.

One said LILY.

The other said ELLA.

I looked at Vanessa.

"Who is Ella?""

She swallowed.

"Your daughter.""

The room seemed to go silent.

"You're saying we had twins?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

I sat down.

"Where is she?""

Vanessa started crying harder.

"I don't know.""

I stared at her.

"You don't know?""

She shook her head.

"She was taken from the hospital.""

"By whom?""

Vanessa looked toward the corridor.

"My father-in-law.""

I felt my blood run cold.

"My father?""

"He came into the maternity ward while you were outside. He said one of the babies had a serious medical condition. He told me the doctors needed to move her to another hospital.""

"Why didn't you call me?""

"I did!""

She grabbed my wrist.

"I called you. I called the nurses. I screamed. But when you came back, they told you Ella had died.""

I shook my head.

"No. I was told Lily was our only child.""

"Because your father arranged it.""

I stood up so quickly that the chair fell backward.

"Why would he take my daughter?""

Vanessa looked at Emily.

Then at Lily.

"Because he believed the girls had a connection to his family records. He wanted one child to remain with you and one to remain under his control.""

Hannah spoke quietly.

"That's what he did with us.""

I looked at her.

"What?""

"He took my daughter because he wanted to separate her from me. He thought that if he controlled who raised the children, he could control what they believed.""

Emily lifted her head.

"Grandpa said I wasn't supposed to know about Lily.""

Vanessa nodded through her tears.

"He kept telling me that Lily was safer without her sister.""

I looked at the two little girls.

They were sitting side by side now.

Lily had taken Emily's hand.

"You're my sister," Lily whispered.

Emily nodded.

"I know.""

"Then you can sleep in my room.""

Emily looked toward Vanessa.

"Is that allowed?""

I felt something tear inside my chest.

I crouched in front of her.

"You can sleep wherever you want, sweetheart.""

She studied my face.

"Even in a real bed?""

I swallowed.

"Especially in a real bed.""

She smiled.

It was the smallest smile.

But it was the first time I had seen her look like a child instead of someone waiting for permission to survive.

My mother appeared at the end of the corridor.

Her face was pale.

She was carrying a small suitcase.

"Ryan.""

I stood.

"Where have you been?""

"Getting something.""

She placed the suitcase on the floor.

Inside were photographs, documents, and a small leather diary.

I recognized the handwriting.

My father's.

My mother opened the diary.

"Your father kept records of every child he brought into this family.""

She turned several pages.

Then stopped.

"This is the part I was afraid you'd find.""

She placed the diary in my hands.

The first entry was dated twenty-six years earlier.

Grace's daughter has been identified. The family line must remain intact.

The next entry was dated six years earlier.

Hannah's child is born. The girl must be kept separate.

Then came another.

Dated four years earlier.

Ryan's twins have arrived. One will remain with him. The other will be raised under observation.

I looked at my mother.

"Observation?""

She turned another page.

There was a photograph of a newborn baby.

A small white hospital blanket.

A tiny hand.

And a hospital bracelet.

The name was visible.

*ELLA MORGAN.*

Beneath it was a handwritten note.

Placement completed. Child transferred to residence.

I looked at the date.

It was the day after Lily was born.

"Where is she?""

My mother closed the diary.

"That's what I've been trying to find out.""

"How long have you known?""

"Since the night she was born.""

I stared at her.

"You knew my daughter was alive?""

My mother nodded.

"Your father told me he had arranged a safe placement. I believed him.""

"And you let me bury an empty coffin?""

She began crying.

"Ryan, I was afraid.""

I stepped back.

"Everyone in this family was afraid. And every time you were afraid, a child paid for it.""

My mother lowered her head.

I looked at the diary again.

There was one final entry.

It was dated just three weeks earlier.

The children are beginning to communicate through the passage. Vanessa is losing control. The youngest must be moved before Ryan discovers the truth.

At the bottom was a name.

Not my father's.

Not Vanessa's.

A name I had never seen before.

*DR. CHARLES BENNETT.*

Beside it was an address.

A private residential facility outside the city.

My mother read it over my shoulder.

Then she covered her mouth.

"Ryan...""

"What?""

She pointed to a photograph tucked into the back of the diary.

It showed a little girl standing in front of a white building.

She was wearing a yellow sweater.

Her hair was neatly brushed.

And beneath her left ear was the familiar crescent-shaped birthmark.

It was Emily.

But the photograph was dated three days ago.

I turned toward Hannah.

"Have you ever been to this place?""

She shook her head.

Then she looked at the photograph again.

Her face changed.

"That's not Emily.""

I frowned.

"What?""

She took the picture from my hands.

"Look at the eyes.""

I studied it.

The little girl had Emily's face.

But her eyes were lighter.

And she was wearing a hospital bracelet.

Hannah began shaking.

"That's Ella.""

Vanessa stood abruptly.

"No.""

Hannah turned toward her.

"Yes.""

I looked between them.

"You're saying the child in this photograph is my missing daughter?""

Hannah nodded.

"Your father didn't just hide her.""

She pointed to the address.

"He sent her somewhere else.""

Then she looked directly at Vanessa.

"And he sent someone with her.""

Vanessa backed away.

I took a step toward my wife.

"Who?""

She couldn't speak.

Hannah answered for her.

"The woman who helped him take the baby.""

She paused.

Then whispered:

"Vanessa's mother.""

Vanessa's knees gave way.

And as I caught her, my phone began ringing.

An unknown number.

I answered.

A woman's voice spoke.

"Mr. Morgan? My name is Dr.

Bennett. I'm calling about your daughter, Ella.""

I gripped the phone.

"Where is she?""

There was a long silence.

Then the woman said:

"She's safe. But you need to come immediately.""

"Why?""

I heard a door close on her end.

When she spoke again, her voice was barely audible.

"Because your father just arrived here.""

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Then another message appeared.

A photograph.

A little girl standing behind a glass door.

May you like

And beneath it, six words:

*DON'T BRING YOUR WIFE. SHE KNOWS.*
