Chapter 3: The Woman Behind the Locked Door

"Ryan!""

The scream came from the final room.

It was a woman's voice.

Weak.

Hoarse.

But unmistakably alive.

I ran toward the door.

Vanessa grabbed my sleeve.

"Wait!""

I pulled free.

"That's her!""

"Ryan, your father wants you to open it!""

"She's screaming!""

"And he knows you'll do anything to save her!""

Another scream.

"Please! Don't leave Emily!""

The little girl beside me began sobbing.

"Mommy!""

That was enough.

I grabbed the keys and tried them one after another.

The first didn't fit.

Neither did the second.

The third turned halfway before jamming.

Behind me, Vanessa was breathing hard.

"There's another key.""

"Where?""

"Your mother had it.""

I stared at her.

"Where did she keep it?""

Vanessa reached into her coat pocket.

She pulled out a small silver key attached to a red thread.

I stared at it.

"You had this the whole time?""

"I was going to give it to you when I knew it was safe.""

"When?""

She didn't answer.

I turned the key.

The lock clicked.

The door opened a few inches.

A foul smell drifted out.

Not death.

Not exactly.

Something stale, like a room that hadn't seen sunlight in years.

A woman sat on the edge of a narrow mattress.

Her wrists were bruised.

Her hair was tangled.

A plastic bottle and an untouched plate of food sat on the floor.

She looked up.

Her eyes moved from me to Vanessa.

Then to Emily.

And she began to cry.

"Baby.""

Emily ran toward her.

The woman caught her in both arms.

"Oh, my baby. My beautiful girl.""

I stood in the doorway, unable to speak.

Vanessa lowered her head.

Hannah looked at me.

"You're Ryan.""

I nodded.

She studied my face.

"You look like him.""

"I know.""

"No," she whispered.

"You don't understand. You look exactly like him when he was young.""

I stepped inside.

"Are you hurt?""

She looked at the marks on her wrists.

"Not anymore.""

"What does that mean?""

Hannah looked toward Vanessa.

"Did she tell you?""

"Some of it.""

"Then she hasn't told you enough.""

Vanessa closed the door behind us.

Hannah gently moved Emily aside and reached beneath her mattress.

She pulled out a folded piece of paper.

It was a hospital document.

At the top was a name.

*MORGAN FAMILY MEDICAL CENTER.*

Below it was a list of procedures.

Genetic screening.

Identity verification.

Blood collection.

And something called Lineage Preservation Protocol.

I read the words twice.

"What is this?""

Hannah looked at me.

"Your father believes certain families belong to him. He believes bloodlines should be controlled.""

I felt sick.

"He kept you here because you're his daughter?""

"That was the beginning.""

She took a shaky breath.

"He wanted Emily to grow up believing that she could never survive outside this house. He wanted her to depend on him.""

"Why?""

"Because he was planning to use her.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Tell him about the papers.""

Hannah looked at her.

"You tell him.""

Vanessa shook her head.

Hannah's expression hardened.

"Tell him what you signed.""

I turned slowly.

"What papers?""

Vanessa began crying again.

"Ryan, when I was pregnant with Lily, your father came to the hospital.""

I remembered that day.

The rain.

The bright white lights.

Vanessa gripping my hand during labor.

My father arriving with an expensive bouquet.

He had congratulated us.

He had held Lily for almost an hour.

I'd thought it was a beautiful moment.

"What did he do?""

"He told me Lily had a rare genetic condition. He said the hospital needed permission to perform additional tests.""

"That's not unusual.""

"He lied.""

Hannah reached for the document.

"He wanted to compare Lily's DNA with mine.""

I looked at her.

"Why?""

"Because he believed Emily and Lily were connected to something he could inherit.""

I stared at the paper.

Then I noticed a signature at the bottom.

Vanessa's.

My wife had signed it.

My hands began shaking.

"You gave him our daughter's blood?""

"I didn't know what he was doing!""

"But you knew enough to sign.""

"He told me it was routine!""

Hannah interrupted.

"He told her that because he knew she'd believe him.""

Vanessa spun around.

"Don't pretend you know what happened!""

Hannah looked at her quietly.

"I know what happened when you came down here with him.""

Vanessa went pale.

I turned.

"What does she mean?""

Hannah continued.

"Three years ago, Vanessa came into this room with your father. She told me she was going to help me escape.""

I looked at my wife.

"Is that true?""

Vanessa nodded slowly.

"I tried.""

Hannah gave a bitter laugh.

"You brought me a blanket and told me to wait. Then you went upstairs and told him I had tried to attack you.""

"Because he threatened Lily!""

"And what did you think he was doing to my daughter?""

Vanessa covered her face.

I felt something inside me break.

My wife had been living with a secret child in our walls.

She had known the girl was afraid.

She had heard the crying.

And she had chosen silence.

But the worst part was that she looked genuinely terrified.

Not of me.

Of someone else.

A metallic click sounded in the corridor.

Hannah immediately stood.

"He's coming.""

I moved toward the door.

"We need to leave.""

"No," Hannah said.

"Why not?""

She grabbed my wrist.

"Because you haven't seen the records.""

"I don't care about the records!""

"You should.""

She pointed toward the far wall.

There was a metal cabinet with a small lock.

I opened it.

Inside were dozens of folders.

Each contained photographs, medical reports, and birth certificates.

Some belonged to people I recognized.

Others didn't.

I found a folder with my name.

*RYAN MORGAN — BIOLOGICAL STATUS: VERIFIED.*

Beneath it was another file.

*LILY MORGAN — MATERNAL STATUS: UNCONFIRMED.*

I frowned.

"What does this mean?""

Hannah stepped closer.

"Your father told Vanessa that Lily was biologically yours.""

I looked at Vanessa.

She wouldn't meet my eyes.

"But he knew something was wrong with the hospital records.""

I opened the next page.

A DNA comparison.

My name.

Lily's name.

And a result stamped in red.

*PATERNITY EXCLUDED.*

For a moment, I couldn't hear anything.

The fluorescent light buzzed above me.

Lily was standing near the bed, holding Emily's hand.

I looked at Vanessa.

"Is this real?""

She shook her head.

"Ryan, please.""

"Is it real?""

"I don't know!""

I held up the document.

"Your signature is on this!""

She sank onto the mattress.

Hannah took a step toward me.

"Your father has been changing the children's records for years.""

I looked at the two girls.

Lily.

Emily.

The same birthmark.

The same dark eyes.

The same small fingers.

Then I looked at my wife.

"Tell me who Lily's father is.""

Vanessa opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, the door at the end of the corridor swung open.

A man stepped into the light.

My father.

He was holding a small leather briefcase.

And behind him stood a police officer.

"Good evening, Ryan," he said calmly.

May you like

Then he looked at Vanessa.

"Darling, I see you've finally told him.""
