Chapter 4: The DNA Report
My father looked older than I remembered.
His shoulders had narrowed, and his hair had turned almost completely white. But his eyes were unchanged.
Cold.
Calculating.
And strangely amused.
The police officer beside him held a flashlight.
"Everyone stay where you are.""
My father raised one hand.
"Officer, there's no need for that. These are family matters.""
I stepped in front of the girls.
"Don't come any closer.""
My father sighed.
"Still dramatic, I see.""
"You've been keeping children behind walls.""
"That's a very emotional way of describing a complicated family arrangement.""
Hannah made a sound.
"You locked me in here.""
He glanced at her.
"You're upset. Understandably.""
"Where is my mother?""
His expression barely changed.
"Grace is gone.""
"Where?""
"She made some unfortunate decisions.""
Hannah lunged toward him.
I caught her before she reached the doorway.
My father watched us.
"See? This is why she needs supervision.""
The police officer looked uncomfortable.
"Mr. Morgan, you told us there was a domestic dispute.""
"There is.""
"Then why are there locked rooms?""
My father smiled.
"Storage.""
I almost laughed.
"Storage?""
I pointed toward the bed.
"Does your storage usually have children's clothes?""
The officer looked past him.
His flashlight moved over the corridor.
Then he saw the drawings.
The height marks.
The locked doors.
His expression changed.
"Sir, step aside.""
My father didn't move.
Instead, he opened his briefcase.
He took out a thick envelope.
"Before you make a mistake, officer, I suggest you examine these documents.""
The officer hesitated.
My father handed him the envelope.
"Custody agreements. Medical authorizations. Psychological assessments. Everything is legally documented.""
I stared at him.
"You're insane.""
He looked at me.
"No, Ryan. I'm organized.""
He removed another sheet.
"This is a court order granting me temporary guardianship of Emily.""
Hannah shook her head.
"That's a lie.""
"It's signed.""
"Because you forced me!""
My father ignored her.
He turned to the officer.
"Emily has been diagnosed with severe behavioral disturbances. Her mother is unstable. My son is experiencing a mental health crisis, and his wife has been involved in an ongoing dispute with him.""
He paused.
"Unfortunately, he has brought both children into a dangerous situation.""
The officer looked at me.
"Sir, I need you to calm down.""
I stared at him.
"My daughter has been living in a bedroom wall.""
"Let's take this one step at a time.""
My father smiled.
It was the same smile he used when I was a child and he had already won an argument.
Then Vanessa stepped forward.
"Officer, I need to tell you something.""
My father turned.
"Vanessa.""
She swallowed.
"I signed those documents because he threatened me.""
My father's expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
"Be careful," he said.
Vanessa's voice trembled.
"He told me that if I didn't cooperate, he'd take Lily away. He said he had connections at the hospital. He said he could make Ryan look dangerous.""
My father closed the briefcase.
"That's enough.""
"No!""
Vanessa's voice suddenly became louder.
"You told me Ryan wasn't Lily's father.""
The room fell silent.
I looked at her.
My father didn't move.
Vanessa continued.
"You told me the test was wrong. You said Lily had been switched at birth. You said the only way to protect her was to let you manage the records.""
I stepped closer.
"What are you talking about?""
Vanessa looked at me.
"Ryan, I swear I thought you were her father.""
My father laughed softly.
"Of course you did.""
I turned toward him.
"Explain the DNA report.""
He adjusted his cuff.
"DNA reports can be manipulated.""
"Was it manipulated?""
"Everything can be manipulated.""
The police officer looked between us.
"Mr. Morgan, I need you to answer the question.""
My father sighed.
Then he looked directly at me.
"Lily is not your biological daughter.""
The words were simple.
Almost gentle.
I felt my knees weaken.
Vanessa started crying.
My father continued.
"Your marriage was arranged to provide a stable environment for a child I needed protected.""
I stared at him.
"Arranged?""
"Vanessa was selected because she had the appropriate background.""
I turned toward my wife.
She shook her head desperately.
"Ryan, I loved you.""
"Did you?""
"Yes.""
"Was our marriage arranged?""
"No. Not the way he's making it sound.""
My father interrupted.
"Vanessa was introduced to you through a family friend. She knew about your medical history. She knew about your mother's condition. She knew about the house.""
I felt nauseated.
"Why?""
"Because I needed someone who could live here without asking too many questions.""
I looked at the walls.
At the hidden passage.
At the children's drawings.
At the small room where Hannah had spent years.
My father had built an entire life around secrets.
And I had been living inside it.
The police officer finally stepped forward.
"Mr. Morgan, I think you need to come with me.""
My father looked amused.
"On what grounds?""
The officer didn't answer immediately.
Then Lily spoke.
"Grandpa?""
My father turned.
His face softened instantly.
"Hello, sweetheart.""
Lily moved closer to me.
"Why did you tell Mommy to make Emily sleep in the wall?""
My father blinked.
The officer looked down at her.
"Sweetheart, what do you mean?""
Lily pointed at my father.
"He said Emily was bad. He said bad girls don't get beds.""
My father's jaw tightened.
"She's confused.""
Lily shook her head.
"No. I heard you.""
She reached into the pocket of her little dress.
Then she pulled out a small black object.
A recording device.
My father stopped smiling.
I recognized it immediately.
It was the recorder from his study.
Lily had been carrying it for weeks.
"Where did you get that?"" he demanded.
Lily stepped behind me.
"From Grandpa's room.""
My mother had once told me that children notice things adults ignore.
I had never understood what she meant.
Now I did.
The officer took the recorder.
"Let's hear what's on it.""
My father lunged forward.
"Give me that!""
The officer caught his arm.
And for the first time in my life, I watched my father lose control.
He struggled.
He shouted.
He threatened.
Then the recorder began playing.
His voice filled the corridor.
"Emily, you will stay where I put you.""
A child's voice answered.
"But I want my mommy.""
"Your mother doesn't want you.""
"That's not true.""
A pause.
Then my father's voice again.
"Your sister is the important one. You are only here because I need to know what happened.""
I felt Vanessa grip my arm.
The recording continued.
"Now tell me what your mother said about the baby.""
Emily began crying.
My father leaned toward the recorder.
"Tell me who the father is.""
And then a second adult voice spoke.
A woman's voice.
A voice I recognized.
My wife.
"Ryan doesn't know anything.""
I turned toward Vanessa.
She looked as if the floor had disappeared beneath her.
The recording continued.
"Keep it that way," she said.
"He must never know what happened the night Lily was born.""
I stared at her.
"What happened that night?""
Vanessa's lips parted.
May you like
She whispered:
"Ryan, Lily wasn't the only baby born that night.""
