Chapter 7: The Director’s Secret
The phone kept ringing.
Three seconds.
Five seconds.
Ten.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
The name glowing on my screen felt heavier than the weapon still hanging at my side.
FBI Director Evelyn Shaw.
The highest-ranking official in the Bureau.
The person who represented everything I had spent my career defending.
Integrity.
Justice.
Accountability.
And now she was calling me seconds after we discovered someone inside the Bureau wanted me dead.
David looked at the screen.
“Don’t answer.””
Victor immediately looked at him.
“If you don’t answer, she knows we know.””
Maria nodded slowly.
“He’s right.””
David turned toward her.
“You’re seriously suggesting we talk to someone who might be involved?””
“No,” Maria replied.
“I’m suggesting we find out what she knows.””
I stared at the phone.
The ringing continued.
Finally, I answered.
“Director Shaw.””
Her voice came immediately.
“Terrence.””
She sounded calm.
Too calm.
“Where are you?””
I looked at the people around me.
David.
Maria.
Victor.
All of us standing beneath the cold night sky with evidence that could destroy the entire Bureau.
“That’s an interesting question.””
A pause.
“You know why I’m calling.””
I looked at Victor.
He looked back at me.
“She knows,” he mouthed.
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“Then explain.””
Another pause.
Longer this time.
“Not over the phone.””
I almost laughed.
“After everything that happened tonight, you expect me to walk into a room with you?””
“Terrence, listen carefully.””
Her voice changed.
The authority disappeared.
Something else replaced it.
Concern.
Real concern.
“You are in more danger than you understand.””
I looked toward the recording device.
“Funny. That’s exactly what everyone involved keeps telling me.””
“Because it’s true.””
“Are you involved?””
Silence.
A dangerous silence.
Maria watched me carefully.
David’s hand tightened into a fist.
Then Director Shaw answered.
“No.””
One word.
But it carried weight.
I believed her.
Not completely.
Not yet.
But enough.
“Then tell me who is.””
“I can’t.””
“Can’t?””
“I don’t know.””
That surprised me.
A person like Director Shaw didn’t admit uncertainty.
Not publicly.
Not privately.
“Then why call me?””
Her voice lowered.
“Because I received a file twelve hours ago.””
“What file?””
“A termination order.””
The world seemed to slow.
David looked at me.
Maria stepped closer.
“What kind of termination order?”” I asked.
Director Shaw exhaled.
“One authorizing the removal of a federal agent considered compromised.””
I stared into the darkness.
“And that agent was me.””
“Yes.””
“Signed by who?””
Another pause.
Then:
“Me.””
Nobody spoke.
The confession hung in the air.
“You signed an order to remove me?””
“No.””
Her voice became sharper.
“I signed a document that I thought was an internal review authorization. I was told it was a corruption investigation.””
She stopped.
“Then I saw the attached evidence.””
“What evidence?””
“Fabricated evidence.””
My stomach tightened.
“They built the case before Oak Creek.””
“Yes.””
I looked at Victor.
The pieces were falling into place.
They hadn’t just reacted to us.
They had prepared.
Someone knew we were coming.
Someone knew exactly how to destroy us.
“Director,” I said, “who gave you that file?””
“I don’t know.””
I almost didn’t believe it.
“You’re the FBI Director.””
“And someone inside my own agency has been operating beyond my authority.””
Her voice became quieter.
“Terrence, there are people inside this Bureau who have been building something for years.””
Victor stepped closer.
I put the phone on speaker.
Director Shaw heard him.
And immediately stopped.
“Who is that?””
Victor answered.
“Someone you buried.””
The silence was instant.
“Victor Hale?””
“Yes.””
A sharp breath.
Then:
“That’s impossible.””
Victor looked at me.
“No. What’s impossible is how many people believed it.””
Director Shaw was silent for several seconds.
Then she said something that shocked all of us.
“Victor, your survival changes everything.””
Maria frowned.
“Why?””
The director answered:
“Because Victor was the only person who knew the original Iron Rain investigation was compromised.””
Victor’s face hardened.
“No.””
“Yes.””
Director Shaw continued.
“Your partner, Terrence’s father, discovered someone was leaking operational details.””
My chest tightened.
“And?””
“And before he could expose them, the evidence disappeared.””
Victor looked away.
“I know.””
“No,” Shaw said.
“You don’t know everything.””
The night became colder.
“What don’t we know?”” I asked.
Director Shaw’s voice dropped.
“Your father wasn’t the target.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He wasn’t supposed to die.””
Nobody moved.
“Then who was?””
She answered:
“You.””
My heart stopped.
David looked at me.
“What does that mean?””
Director Shaw continued.
“Your father found out that the person they were trying to eliminate was you.””
I shook my head.
“That makes no sense.””
“It does when you understand why.””
“Why?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because your father discovered you were being groomed.””
“Groomed for what?””
Director Shaw didn’t answer immediately.
And that scared me more than anything.
Finally, she said:
“To replace someone.””
I felt a chill.
“Who?””
The answer came quietly.
“The person controlling Operation Iron Rain.””
The call ended.
Not disconnected.
Ended.
Someone had hung up.
Maria immediately checked the signal.
“She didn’t lose connection.””
David looked at her.
“She ended it?””
Maria nodded.
“Someone wanted that conversation to stop.””
Victor looked toward the FBI building in the distance.
“We’re running out of time.””
I looked at him.
“What happens next?””
Victor’s expression was grim.
“Now they know we have the evidence.””
As if summoned by his words, Maria’s phone vibrated.
She checked the message.
Her face changed.
“What?””
She handed me the phone.
One line.
One sentence.
From an unknown sender.
*YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED ON THE GROUND IN OAK CREEK.*
I stared at the message.
May you like
Then another appeared.
*YOUR FATHER MADE THE SAME MISTAKE.*
