Chapter 6: The Man Who Came Back From The Dead
The first thing I did was move.
Training takes over before fear has a chance.
I grabbed Victor by the shoulder and pulled him behind the wall.
The second gunshot hit the window.
Glass exploded across the floor.
“Down!”” I shouted.
Victor dropped instantly.
For a man who had been missing for seven years, he moved like someone who had never stopped fighting.
David’s voice came through my earpiece.
“Terrence, status?””
I pressed the communication button.
“Under fire.””
A pause.
Then David’s voice hardened.
“Who’s with you?””
I looked at Victor.
“Someone you thought was dead.””
Silence.
Then:
“Explain.””
“No time.””
Another shot.
This time from the backyard.
Victor crawled toward the hallway.
“They found me.””
I followed.
“Who?””
He looked at me.
“The same people who found your father.””
The words hit harder than the bullets.
We moved through the house.
Every corner.
Every shadow.
Every sound.
I had spent years teaching agents how to survive situations exactly like this.
But this was different.
Because this wasn’t an operation.
This was personal.
We reached the basement.
Victor opened a hidden compartment behind an old shelf.
I stared.
“You knew about this?””
He nodded.
“Your father built it.””
Inside was a small metal case.
Victor opened it.
Documents.
Photographs.
A recording device.
And one item that made my heart stop.
My father’s FBI badge.
I stared at it.
“That was buried with him.””
Victor looked down.
“No.””
“What?””
“Your father gave it to me before he died.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
Victor’s face changed.
“Because he knew he couldn’t trust anyone else.””
The basement door shook.
Someone was trying to force it open.
Victor grabbed the recording device.
“We need to leave.””
I didn’t move.
“Tell me everything.””
His eyes met mine.
“Not here.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“I spent seven years believing my father died by accident.””
Victor looked away.
“He didn’t.””
The words were quiet.
But they destroyed something inside me.
“Who killed him?””
Victor hesitated.
Then answered:
“I don’t know.””
I stared.
“You don’t know?””
“I know who ordered it.””
“Who?””
Victor looked at the badge in my hand.
Then said:
“The same person who signed the order sending you to Oak Creek.””
My stomach dropped.
“Whitmore.””
Victor didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
The basement door cracked open.
A shadow appeared.
Victor grabbed my arm.
“Now.””
We escaped through an old tunnel beneath the house.
A tunnel I never knew existed.
A tunnel my father had built decades ago.
When we reached the street behind the house, federal vehicles were already arriving.
David ran toward us.
He stopped when he saw Victor.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then David said:
“You’re alive.””
Victor nodded.
“Yes.””
David looked at me.
“What did he tell you?””
I looked back at the house.
The place where my father had raised us.
The place where someone had just tried to kill us.
“He told me Dad was murdered.””
David went completely still.
Maria arrived moments later.
Her face hardened when she saw Victor.
“You have no idea what you’ve started.””
Victor looked at her.
“I know exactly what I started.””
Maria stepped closer.
“Then explain.””
Victor looked at all of us.
Then handed Maria the recording device.
“This contains the original evidence from Operation Iron Rain.””
Maria took it carefully.
“What kind of evidence?””
Victor answered:
“Proof that the operation was never about stopping illegal weapons.””
David frowned.
“Then what was it about?””
Victor looked at me.
“It was about controlling them.””
Nobody spoke.
Maria activated the device.
Static filled the air.
Then a voice appeared.
A voice I recognized immediately.
Alan Whitmore.
“You’re certain Miller has no idea?””
Another voice answered.
Unknown.
“Yes.””
Whitmore continued.
“Good. Keep him focused on criminals. He’ll never suspect the people giving him orders.””
My blood ran cold.
Because the recording was not from years ago.
Maria checked the timestamp.
Her expression changed.
“It was recorded yesterday.””
David stared.
“Yesterday?””
Victor nodded.
“They knew you were investigating them.””
I looked at him.
“Who is the other voice?””
Victor looked away.
“I never found out.””
The recording continued.
Then the unknown person spoke.
“Once Miller enters Oak Creek, we can remove him permanently.””
The world stopped.
Because I heard my own name.
Then Whitmore answered:
“Make it look like his mistake.””
Maria immediately stopped the recording.
No one moved.
No one breathed.
Because now we had proof.
Not just corruption.
Not just conspiracy.
A planned assassination.
Against me.
David looked furious.
“They wanted you dead.””
I looked at the recording device.
Then at Victor.
“Why save me now?””
Victor was silent.
For a long moment.
Then he said:
“Because I failed your father.””
The honesty surprised me.
He looked at the ground.
“I spent seven years running because I was afraid.””
He looked back at me.
“But your father spent his final moments trying to protect the truth.””
A federal helicopter approached overhead.
The wind pushed against us.
Maria looked at the sky.
Then at the evidence.
“We need to move.””
I nodded.
But before we left, Victor grabbed my arm.
“There’s one more thing.””
“What?””
He looked at me seriously.
“The person controlling Whitmore…”
He paused.
“…is not outside the Bureau.””
I waited.
Victor whispered:
“They are sitting at the very top.””
And then my phone rang.
The caller ID appeared.
I stared at the name.
Because the person calling me was someone who should have been protecting me.
Someone I trusted.
Someone who knew exactly where I was.
