Chapter 9: The Final Letter From Claire

The police arrived before sunrise.

But whoever left the note was already gone.

No cameras.

No witnesses.

No evidence except the words burned into my mind.

Stop searching, or lose another.

I refused to let my daughters see my fear.

But inside, I was breaking.

Because Claire had died.

And now someone was threatening my family again.

The next morning, I called Rebecca.

She answered immediately.

“Eric?””

“I need answers.””

A long pause.

Then:

“I know.””

I looked outside at the snow-covered yard.

“Did you know Claire was threatened?””

Rebecca went silent.

That told me everything.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

My voice became quiet.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

Rebecca sighed.

“Because Claire made us promise.””

“Why?””

“Because she believed you would go after them.””

I closed my eyes.

She was right.

I would have.

Rebecca continued.

“She wanted you to protect Ella, not chase revenge.””

That sounded like Claire.

Always thinking about everyone else.

I looked at the dress hanging on the chair.

The dress that started this.

“Where is the rest of the evidence?””

Rebecca answered:

“There is one more thing.””

“What?””

“A video.””

I froze.

“A video of what?””

“Claire.””

My breath stopped.

“Where?””

“Your mother’s house.””

I turned.

Diane was standing in the doorway.

She knew.

Rebecca said:

“Claire recorded it before she died.””

I ended the call.

Then I looked at Diane.

“You had a video.””

Her face changed.

“Eric…”

“You had a video of Claire.””

“I was protecting you.””

I laughed.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I walked past her.

“Where is it?””

Diane followed me.

“In the cabinet.””

Of course.

Everything was in that cabinet.

I opened the hidden compartment again.

Behind the documents was a small memory card.

Michael helped me connect it to the television.

The screen flickered.

Then Claire appeared.

Older than the day we met.

Tired.

But smiling.

My knees almost gave out.

“Eric.””

Her voice filled the room.

I covered my mouth.

“Hi, love.””

Tears fell immediately.

“I wish I could be there when you see this.””

The recording continued.

“If you’re watching this, then the dress worked.””

I looked at Ella’s torn dress.

Claire smiled sadly.

“I knew Diane would recognize it.””

Diane started crying.

Claire continued.

“I need you to know something. Diane made terrible choices. Your father made terrible choices. But they loved you.””

I looked at my mother.

Claire had forgiven her.

Maybe someday I could too.

Then Claire’s expression changed.

“But the person who threatened me is still dangerous.””

The room became silent.

Claire looked directly into the camera.

“Eric, do not trust anyone who tells you they are protecting you.””

My heart dropped.

She continued.

“Especially the person who says they did everything for love.””

I looked at Diane.

She looked terrified.

Claire’s voice softened.

“There is one final truth you need.””

She paused.

“The person who caused all of this is not Robert’s brother.””

Everyone froze.

“What?”” Michael whispered.

Claire continued.

“He was only a messenger.””

The screen flickered.

Then Claire said the words that changed everything.

“The person who ordered the threats was someone you trust.””

The video ended.

Nobody moved.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

No one spoke.

Only breathing.

Then a voice.

A voice I recognized.

A voice I never expected.

“Eric.””

May you like

My blood ran cold.

Because the person on the phone was standing in the room.
