Chapter 7: The Woman Who Knew Before Me
I couldn’t sleep that night.
The guest room at my mother’s house felt smaller than it had when I was a child.
The same walls.
The same wooden floor.
The same ceiling where I used to stare when storms kept me awake.
But everything felt different.
Because now I knew the house had been built on secrets.
I sat on the edge of the bed holding Claire’s letters.
I had read them three times.
Each time, I found something new.
Something I missed.
Claire had not written like someone who wanted revenge.
She wrote like someone who was afraid.
Like someone trying to leave a map behind.
A map that would lead me to the truth.
At 3:17 in the morning, I noticed something.
One sentence kept appearing in her letters.
I need you to understand why I waited.
Why she waited.
Not why she hid.
Why she waited.
That meant she had a reason.
A reason she believed mattered.
The next morning, I found Michael sitting alone in the kitchen.
He looked exhausted.
“You knew Claire well.””
He looked up.
“Yes.””
“How?””
He stared into his coffee.
“She found me when she was searching for Rebecca.””
“Why you?””
“Because I knew the family history.””
I sat across from him.
“Tell me everything.””
Michael was quiet for a long time.
Then he spoke.
“Claire was twenty-two when she discovered the first clue.””
“What clue?””
“A letter from her father.””
My stomach tightened.
“Her father knew?””
“Yes.””
I looked away.
Another person.
Another secret.
“How many people knew about me?””
Michael sighed.
“More than you think.””
That answer made me angry.
“My entire life was discussed by people who weren’t me.””
He nodded.
“You have every right to be angry.””
I looked at him.
“But Claire still married me.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Michael smiled sadly.
“Because Claire loved you.””
I looked down.
“She knew everything.””
“Not everything.””
“What do you mean?””
Michael leaned forward.
“She knew your history. She didn’t know why Diane did it.””
I frowned.
“Then she found out later.””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“After your wedding.””
I froze.
“After?””
Michael nodded.
“She believed Diane took you because she wanted a child.””
“That’s what happened.””
“No.””
His answer was immediate.
“No?””
Michael shook his head.
“Diane did not plan it alone.””
The kitchen suddenly felt silent.
“Who helped her?””
Before he could answer, someone spoke behind me.
“I did.””
I turned.
Diane stood in the doorway.
Her face was pale.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then she walked inside.
“I was going to tell you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“When?””
She looked down.
“Before Claire died.””
My jaw tightened.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“Because it makes you feel better.””
Diane flinched.
She sat down slowly.
“Your father was sick.””
I stared.
“What?””
“Before you were born. He was told he might never have children.””
I frowned.
“I didn’t know that.””
“Because we never told you.””
She looked at her hands.
“When Rebecca had you, Robert became obsessed with the idea of raising you.””
I felt sick.
“Obsessed?””
Diane nodded.
“He convinced himself it was destiny.””
I whispered:
“And you agreed.””
She cried.
“Yes.””
The kitchen became unbearably quiet.
Then Diane looked at me.
“But there’s something Claire never knew.””
I narrowed my eyes.
“What?””
She reached into her pocket.
And placed an old key on the table.
Not brass.
Silver.
Different.
“This opens the second compartment in the cabinet.””
I stared at it.
“Why didn’t you give me this yesterday?””
Her eyes filled with fear.
“Because I was hoping you would never find what’s inside.””
I stood.
“What’s inside?””
She looked at me.
“Proof that Claire was protecting you from someone else.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
Diane didn’t answer.
Instead, she pushed the key toward me.
Then she whispered:
“The person who destroyed your family was not me.””
I stared at her.
“Then who was it?””
Diane looked toward the stairs.
Toward where my daughters were sleeping.

And quietly said:
“Someone who is still alive.””
