Chapter 8: The Secret Claire Took to Her Grave

The second key felt colder than the first.

I carried it downstairs with Michael beside me.

Diane followed behind.

Nobody spoke.

The cabinet was still open from the night before.

But now it looked different.

Like it was waiting.

I inserted the silver key into the hidden compartment.

Click.

A small section of the cabinet opened.

Inside was a folder.

No letters.

No photographs.

Just one name written on the front.

Robert Anderson.

My father.

I opened it.

The first page was a medical report.

I scanned the words.

Then stopped.

My father’s illness.

The diagnosis.

The dates.

My hands began to shake.

Because the report was from the year after I was born.

Michael watched my face.

“What does it say?””

I looked up.

“My father knew he wasn’t my biological father.””

Diane closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The words hurt more than I expected.

Because suddenly, I understood.

My father hadn’t been fooled.

He had chosen.

He had known.

I turned the page.

There was a handwritten note.

My father’s handwriting.

I know the truth.

I continued reading.

But I cannot lose my son.

I swallowed.

The next sentence made my chest ache.

I have spent my entire life afraid that one day Eric will look at me and see a stranger.

I stopped.

Because I knew that feeling.

Even now.

I looked at the signature.

Robert.

My father.

Not my biological father.

But my father.

The next page was from Claire.

My breath caught.

Eric,

I found your father’s confession. I know what he did was wrong. But I also know he loved you.

I sat down.

Claire had known.

She had known my father wasn’t my father.

She had known Diane wasn’t my biological mother.

She had known everything.

But she still stayed.

Why?

The letter continued.

The truth is complicated. The people who hurt us are sometimes the same people who loved us.

Tears burned my eyes.

That sounded exactly like Claire.

She never saw people as monsters.

She saw their choices.

Their pain.

Their mistakes.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

But there is one person I cannot forgive.

I looked at the page.

The person who threatened me when I discovered the truth.

My heart stopped.

Threatened?

I read faster.

They told me if I told Eric everything, they would take Ella away.

My hands went numb.

Ella.

My daughter.

Claire had been protecting Ella.

I looked at Michael.

“Who threatened her?””

He looked at Diane.

Diane shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

But her expression said she did.

“Mom.””

She looked away.

“Tell me.””

She whispered:

“Your uncle.””

I froze.

“My uncle?””

“Robert’s brother.””

I searched my memory.

I barely remembered him.

A man who attended family events.

A man who disappeared after my father’s funeral.

“What did he want?””

Diane looked terrified.

“He wanted control of the family money.””

Michael nodded.

“He knew Robert had changed his will.””

I looked at the documents.

“And Claire found out.””

“Yes.””

“And he threatened her.””

“Yes.””

The pieces connected.

The hidden cabinet.

The letters.

The dress.

Claire wasn’t just revealing my past.

She was leaving evidence.

Evidence in case something happened to her.

My stomach twisted.

“Did Claire die because of this?””

Nobody answered.

That silence was enough.

Then a sound came from upstairs.

A scream.

“Daddy!””

I ran.

Ella was standing in the hallway.

Holding something.

Her face was pale.

“What happened?””

She pointed toward the bedroom window.

“There was someone outside.””

My heart stopped.

I rushed to the window.

In the snow below was a single footprint.

And lying on the ground was a folded piece of paper.

I picked it up.

Only five words were written.

Stop searching, or lose another.
