Chapter 6: The Secret Ethan Carried
The message from Ms. Whitmore stayed on my screen for almost a full minute.
*You still don't know the real reason Ethan was chosen.*
I wanted to believe it was another attempt to scare me.
Another manipulation.
Another cruel game from someone who had spent months making children feel powerless.
But there was something different about those words.
She wasn't threatening me.
She was reminding me.
Like she knew something I didn't.
I showed the message to Officer Daniels.
His expression hardened immediately.
"Do not respond.""
"I wasn't going to.""
"Good.""
He took a screenshot.
"Every message matters now.""
I looked through the classroom window.
Students were arriving for the morning.
Backpacks.
Lunch boxes.
Small hands holding onto parents before letting go.
Everything looked normal.
That was the terrifying part.
Someone could create fear in a place designed to protect children, and everyone walking past would never know.
"What does she mean?"" I asked.
Officer Daniels looked at the evidence folder.
"We need to find out.""
That afternoon, Ethan sat at the kitchen table drawing.
Normally, he would tell me every tiny detail about his day.
A funny joke someone made.
A game he played.
A new word he learned.
But lately, he had become quiet.
Too quiet.
I sat beside him.
"Buddy.""
He kept coloring.
"Can I ask you something?""
He nodded.
"Why do you think Ms. Whitmore picked you?""
The crayon stopped moving.
For a few seconds, he didn't speak.
Then he whispered:
"Because I saw something.""
My heart tightened.
"What did you see?""
He looked toward the hallway.
Like he was making sure nobody else was there.
"She was in the teacher's room.""
"When?""
"Two weeks before the camera thing.""
I waited.
"She was talking to someone.""
"Who?""
"I don't know.""
"What did they say?""
Ethan pressed his lips together.
"I wasn't trying to listen.""
"I know.""
"I was looking for my jacket.""
He put the crayon down.
"She said my name.""
I leaned closer.
"What did she say?""
His eyes became watery.
"She said, 'The Carter boy is asking too many questions.''"
A chill moved through me.
"Then what happened?""
"She said someone needed to teach me not to talk.""
I held his hand.
"Ethan, why didn't you tell me?""
He looked down.
"Because she told me nobody would believe me.""
The words hurt.
Not because they were true.
Because an eight-year-old child had believed them.
That evening, Officer Daniels returned with new information.
"We found the person she was talking to.""
I stood immediately.
"Who?""
He placed a photograph on the table.
A man.
Late forties.
Professional suit.
Cold expression.
I recognized him.
Daniel Whitmore.
Her husband.
"The board member?""
Officer Daniels nodded.
"But there's more.""
He opened another document.
"This conversation happened before the camera incident.""
I read the report.
Ms. Whitmore had been worried about Ethan because he had witnessed something.
Something involving school records.
"Records?""
Officer Daniels nodded.
"Student files.""
"What about them?""
"We're still investigating.""
The next morning, I went to the school with one question.
What exactly had Ethan discovered?
Principal Harris met me in his office.
He looked exhausted.
"I owe you an explanation.""
"Yes, you do.""
He sighed.
"Several years ago, the district created a special support program.""
"For students?""
"Yes.""
"What kind of support?""
"Behavioral support. Counseling. Additional resources.""
I waited.
"And?""
His eyes moved toward the window.
"Funding was tied to enrollment numbers.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
"It means some people benefited when students were labeled as needing extra intervention.""
The room went silent.
"You mean...""
"Some children were intentionally classified as problems.""
My stomach turned.
"And Ms. Whitmore was involved?""
Principal Harris nodded slowly.
"She helped identify students.""
"Identify them for what?""
He looked at me.
"To make the numbers look higher.""
I felt sick.
Children weren't children to them.
They were statistics.
Ethan wasn't chosen because he was difficult.
He was chosen because he noticed.
Because he questioned.
Because he remembered.
That night, I received another call from Officer Daniels.
"We found the original classroom footage.""
I sat up.
"Original?""
"The camera wasn't just unplugged.""
"What do you mean?""
"There was a backup system.""
My breath caught.
"Can we see it?""
A pause.
Then:
"Yes.""
"What's on it?""
His voice lowered.
"The moment before Ms. Whitmore turned off the camera.""
I opened my laptop.
The video loaded.
The classroom appeared.
Ethan sat alone near the back.
Ms. Whitmore walked toward him.
But this time, we saw something different.
Before she reached him...
She looked directly at the camera.
And smiled.
May you like
Then she whispered:
"Let's see who believes you.""
