Chapter 3: The Hidden Recording
The next morning, Ethan refused to go to school.
He stood by the front door holding his backpack.
But he wouldn't move.
"I can't go.""
I knelt down.
"Tell me why.""
His eyes filled with fear.
"Because she knows.""
"Who knows?""
"Ms. Whitmore.""
I held his shoulders gently.
"Buddy, what does she know?""
He looked at me for a long moment.
Then he whispered:
"She knows I saw her.""
My heart stopped.
"Saw her do what?""
Ethan looked toward the window.
"She took money from another kid's desk.""
I blinked.
"What?""
"Not money.""
He shook his head.
"His medicine.""
The room felt colder.
Ethan explained that another student, Noah, had a special medical kit he kept in his backpack.
One day, he saw Ms. Whitmore remove it.
When he asked why, she became angry.
"She told me never to talk about things I don't understand.""
I remembered the report.
The accusations.
The camera.
Everything suddenly connected.
Ethan wasn't a problem.
He was a witness.
At school, Officer Daniels met me outside.
"We found something.""
He held a small storage device.
"Lily gave this to the counselor.""
"What is it?""
"A recording.""
My hands shook.
"From where?""
"Her tablet.""
Lily had accidentally left the audio recorder running during class.
The recording started with normal classroom sounds.
Papers moving.
Children whispering.
Then Ms. Whitmore's voice.
"Ethan, come here.""
A chair scraped.
Ethan's voice:
"Why?""
"Because we need to talk.""
A pause.
Then:
"You shouldn't repeat things you hear.""
My breathing stopped.
Ethan replied:
"I didn't lie.""
The teacher's voice became colder.
"Everyone thinks you're such a good kid.""
A pause.
"But good kids know when to stay quiet.""
I looked at Officer Daniels.
His face was tense.
The recording continued.
Then came the sound of footsteps.
A click.
The camera being unplugged.
And Ethan whispering:
"Please don't.""
The audio ended.
I felt tears burning my eyes.
Officer Daniels spoke quietly.
"This is enough to investigate.""
But before we could leave, Principal Harris approached.
He looked nervous.
"Mrs. Carter, can we talk?""
I turned.
"About what?""
He lowered his voice.
"About Ms. Whitmore.""
My expression changed.
"You knew?""
"I suspected.""
"How long?""
He looked away.
"Several months.""
Anger rose inside me.
"You let her stay?""
"We needed evidence.""
"My son was your evidence?""
"No.""
He shook his head.
"I didn't know she would target Ethan.""
The principal handed me a folder.
Inside were complaints.
Multiple complaints.
Parents.
Students.
Teachers.
All about the same thing.
Fear.
"I tried to remove her," he said.
"But she had supporters on the school board.""
I stared at the papers.
Then I noticed something.
One signature appeared repeatedly.
A board member.
Someone approving every investigation closure.
Someone protecting her.
I looked up.
"Who is this?""
Principal Harris went silent.
"Who?""
His face changed.
May you like
And I knew.
The answer was worse than I expected.
