Chapter 2: The Girl Who Saw Everything

The security footage didn't show everything.

Not yet.

But it showed enough.

Ethan walking into the back corner of the classroom.

Ms. Whitmore following him.

Then the camera went black.

Officer Daniels watched the screen carefully.

"There's something else," he said.

"What?""

He pointed.

"Look.""

A small figure appeared near the edge of the video.

A student.

A girl.

She wasn't involved.

She was sitting at her desk.

Watching.

"Who is that?"" I asked.

Officer Daniels zoomed in.

"Her name is Lily Bennett.""

I remembered her.

A quiet girl who always carried a purple notebook.

"She saw it?""

"Maybe.""

I immediately wanted to find her.

But Officer Daniels stopped me.

"Don't confront the teacher yet.""

"Why?""

"Because if someone intentionally disabled the camera, they know how to hide evidence.""

I hated that he was right.

Later that afternoon, I waited outside the classroom.

Students walked out laughing and talking.

Then Lily appeared.

She stopped when she saw me.

"Hi, Lily.""

She looked nervous.

"Are you Ethan's mom?""

"Yes.""

Her eyes dropped.

"I need to ask you something.""

She swallowed.

"About yesterday.""

The girl looked around.

Then she whispered:

"Are you here because of the camera?""

My breath caught.

"Why would you ask that?""

Lily hugged her notebook tighter.

"Because I saw Ms. Whitmore unplug it.""

The hallway suddenly felt silent.

"Tell me exactly what happened.""

She glanced toward the classroom door.

"I was doing my math worksheet. Ethan was cleaning up crayons because he spilled them.""

She paused.

"Ms. Whitmore told everyone to stay seated.""

"What happened next?""

"She called Ethan to the back.""

Lily's voice became smaller.

"She was angry.""

"What did she say?""

Lily looked at me.

"She said, 'You should have learned by now what happens when you tell stories.''"

My stomach dropped.

"Stories?""

"Yes.""

"What stories?""

Lily hesitated.

Then she opened her notebook.

Inside were drawings.

Not random drawings.

Pictures of a classroom.

A teacher standing over a child.

A camera with an X over it.

"When did you draw this?""

"Yesterday.""

"Why?""

She whispered:

"Because I thought nobody would believe me.""

A door opened behind us.

We both turned.

Ms. Whitmore stood there.

Her smile was polite.

But her eyes were not.

"Lily?""

The girl froze.

"What are you doing outside?""

"I was just—"

Ms. Whitmore looked at me.

Then at Lily.

Then back at me.

"Mrs. Carter, is there a problem?""

I kept my voice steady.

"I was asking Lily about the classroom.""

The teacher smiled.

"Children misunderstand things.""

Lily stepped backward.

Ms. Whitmore noticed.

Her expression changed for just a moment.

A flash of irritation.

Then it disappeared.

"Ethan has been struggling," she said.

"I hope you're not encouraging him to create stories.""

My jaw tightened.

"My son is eight years old.""

"Exactly.""

She walked closer.

"Eight-year-olds can be very convincing.""

Then she looked directly at Lily.

"And sometimes they influence each other.""

Lily's face went pale.

That night, Officer Daniels called me.

"I checked the security logs.""

"And?""

"The camera was unplugged manually.""

"Can you prove who did it?""

A pause.

Then:

"Not yet.""

I closed my eyes.

"What do we do?""

His voice became serious.

"We wait.""

"For what?""

"The person who thinks they're safe.""

I looked at Ethan sleeping on the couch.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number appeared.

*Stop asking questions.*

A second message came immediately after.

*You don't know what your son did.*

May you like

Then a final message.

*But I know what he saw.*
