Chapter 1: The House of Beautiful Lies

Lily Carter had worked in the Blackwood mansion for eight months, and she had learned one terrifying truth: the most dangerous people were often the ones who smiled the most.

Serena Montigue had spent years building a perfect image.

Chicago knew her as the graceful philanthropist who donated millions to children’s charities, the woman whose photographs appeared in glossy magazines beside words like compassionate, elegant, and inspiring.

But inside the marble walls of the Blackwood mansion, Lily had seen a different woman.

A woman who locked doors when nobody was watching.

A woman who whispered cruel things to a baby who could barely speak.

A woman who always checked the security cameras before doing anything she knew she shouldn’t.

And on the morning everything finally exploded, Lily realized Serena wasn’t afraid of being caught.

She was afraid of one person.

Victor Blackwood.

The billionaire owner of the mansion.

The man Chicago businessmen feared.

The man who had built an empire from nothing and destroyed anyone who tried to take advantage of him.

The man who had no idea what was happening under his own roof.

Until that afternoon.

“Ethan, sweetheart, come here,” Lily whispered.

The fourteen-month-old boy sat on the soft carpet in the family room, holding a small wooden toy train.

He looked up at her with bright eyes.

“Lily.””

The way he said her name was barely a word, but it always made her smile.

“I’m right here.””

She picked him up carefully and adjusted the little brace around his wrist.

Ethan had been born with a condition that affected his joints. He needed patience, gentle movements, and constant care.

That was why Lily had been hired.

Not because she was wealthy.

Not because she had connections.

Because she loved children.

And Ethan loved her.

Serena hated that.

Lily noticed it the first week.

“You’re getting too attached,” Serena had said while standing in the doorway.

Lily had looked up from Ethan’s crib.

“He needs someone he trusts.””

Serena’s smile had been cold.

“He needs to remember his place.””

Lily had frowned.

“He’s fourteen months old.””

Serena had walked closer and adjusted her diamond bracelet.

“He’s a Blackwood.””

The sentence stayed with Lily.

Because Serena never spoke about Ethan like he was a child.

She spoke about him like he was an object.

A possession.

That afternoon, Victor was supposed to be away at a business meeting until the following morning.

Serena knew it.

Everyone knew it.

The mansion staff had relaxed because the person who could challenge Serena wasn’t there.

Lily should have been more careful.

She should have noticed how quiet the house became.

She should have noticed Serena standing at the end of the hallway.

Watching.

“Why are you still holding him?”” Serena asked.

Lily turned.

“Because he was crying.””

“He needs to stop being so weak.””

Lily’s expression hardened.

“He’s a baby.””

Serena stepped closer.

“Don’t correct me.””

Ethan immediately reached for Lily’s shirt.

His small fingers tightened.

Serena noticed.

And something changed in her face.

“You see?””

Lily held him closer.

“See what?””

“He chooses you.””

The words came out like an accusation.

“Serena…”

“Victor thinks you’re some innocent little caregiver who saved his son.””

Her voice lowered.

“But you’re forgetting something.””

Lily stayed silent.

Serena smiled.

“I decide who stays in this house.””

Then she reached for Ethan.

“No.””

The word escaped Lily before she could stop it.

Serena froze.

“You said no to me?””

“He’s tired.””

“I wasn’t asking.””

She grabbed Ethan’s arm.

Lily immediately moved forward.

“Stop. You’re hurting him.””

But Serena didn’t listen.

The next few seconds happened too quickly.

A scream.

A crash.

Tiny footsteps against marble.

Lily ran.

When she reached the foyer, she saw Ethan on the floor.

Serena had dragged him across the cold marble.

His face was red.

His breathing was broken.

One hand was still gripping his sleeve.

“Let him go!””

Lily threw herself forward.

Serena released Ethan only long enough to turn.

Then her heel struck Lily’s stomach.

Pain exploded through Lily.

She fell backward.

The chandelier above her spun.

For a moment, she couldn’t breathe.

Then Ethan cried again.

That sound pulled her back.

She crawled toward him.

“Ethan…”

Serena stepped on the back of her uniform.

“Touch him again,” she said quietly, “and you disappear.””

Lily looked up.

Serena’s face was calm.

Almost bored.

“You think anyone will believe you?””

Lily’s hands shook.

“He needs medical help.””

“He needs discipline.””

“He’s a baby.””

Serena tilted her head.

“He’s a Blackwood.””

Then the house changed.

The lights flickered.

A door opened somewhere beyond the west corridor.

Slow footsteps echoed across the marble.

Everyone froze.

Because nobody walked like Victor Blackwood.

Nobody had to announce his arrival.

The entire room knew.

Victor stepped from the shadows.

Rain covered his black coat.

His expression was unreadable.

Behind him stood two security officers.

Serena’s confidence disappeared for one second.

Only one second.

Then she recovered.

“Victor.””

Her voice became soft.

Fragile.

“She attacked Ethan.””

Lily stared at her.

Victor looked at his son first.

Ethan reached toward him.

“Daddy.””

Something broke in Victor’s eyes.

Then vanished.

He carefully lifted his son.

“Call Dr. Moreno.””

One of the guards moved.

Victor looked at Lily.

“Can you stand?””

“I don’t know.””

He helped her sit up.

Serena stepped closer.

“You believe her?””

Victor didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked upward.

At the security camera.

The red light was off.

“Why is that camera disabled?””

Serena hesitated.

“Maintenance.””

Victor looked at his security chief.

Marco Ruiz checked his tablet.

“No maintenance request.””

Silence.

Then Victor noticed something beneath the console table.

A small black recorder.

He picked it up.

Serena’s face changed.

“That’s nothing.””

Victor pressed play.

Her voice filled the foyer.

“You think anyone will believe a cheap nanny over me?””

Then Ethan’s scream.

Then Lily’s voice.

“You’re hurting him.””

Victor stopped the recording.

Nobody spoke.

Serena stepped backward.

“Victor, listen to me—”

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

That made it worse.

“I understand enough.””

He handed Ethan to Marco.

Then he looked at Serena.

“You don’t make decisions in this house anymore.””

Her face went pale.

“Victor.””

“Lock the gates.””

Marco nodded.

As the guards moved, Victor turned toward the stairs.

A housemaid stood there.

Her hands were shaking.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Sir…”

Victor stopped.

The woman looked terrified.

“This wasn’t the first time.””

The mansion became silent.

Victor stared at her.

“What did you say?””

The maid swallowed.

“She’s been doing things when you weren’t here.””

May you like

Victor’s jaw tightened.

And for the first time that night, he realized the recorder had captured only the beginning.
