The Badge Under Her Jacket / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8: The Man Who Never Left

For eighteen years, Renee Brooks had studied people like Grant Mercer.

Men who believed they were smarter than everyone around them.

Men who convinced themselves their actions were necessary.

Men who turned their own failures into someone else’s responsibility.

But hearing his voice was different.

Because Mercer didn’t sound like a monster.

He sounded ordinary.

That was always the dangerous part.

“Where are you?”” Renee asked.

A pause.

“Does it matter?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I want to look you in the eyes.””

Mercer laughed quietly.

“I always liked that about you.””

Renee frowned.

“You know me?””

“I know everyone who tried to find me.””

The call continued.

Officers gathered around.

Everyone listening.

Mercer said:

“You think I’m the villain.””

“No.””

Renee looked at the files.

“I think you’re someone who made choices and refused to accept consequences.””

Silence.

Then Mercer said:

“You sound exactly like your father.””

Renee froze.

“My father?””

Maya looked at her.

Renee had never mentioned him at work.

Not once.

“How do you know about him?””

Mercer ignored the question.

“He believed institutions could be fixed.””

His voice lowered.

“He was wrong.””

Renee felt anger rise.

“What did you do?””

“Nothing.””

“Then why mention him?””

Another pause.

“Because he was the first person who exposed me.””

The entire room went silent.

Renee had spent years believing her father left law enforcement because he was tired.

Because he wanted a quieter life.

Not because of Mercer.

“What happened?””

Mercer sighed.

“You should ask your captain.””

Renee looked at Victor.

The captain’s face had gone pale.

“Victor?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

The call ended.

Immediately, Renee turned.

“How long were you going to keep this from me?””

Victor looked devastated.

“I didn’t know how to tell you.””

“That’s not an answer.””

He sat down.

“Your father discovered Mercer was manipulating reports.””

Renee’s hands tightened.

“And?””

“And he tried to expose him.””

“What happened?””

Victor looked at her.

“Your father disappeared from the department.””

Renee stared.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“You told me he resigned.””

Victor looked down.

“I lied.””

The words hurt more than she expected.

Not because Victor was the first person to betray her.

Because he was the latest.

Maya quietly stepped away.

“I’m sorry.””

Renee looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because this is bigger than Mercer.””

She pointed at the files.

“Your father found the beginning.””

Renee opened the drive Victor had given her.

Hidden folders appeared.

One file name caught her attention.

BROOKS INVESTIGATION.

She clicked.

A scanned document appeared.

Her father’s handwriting.

Her breathing stopped.

*If anyone finds this, it means the problem was never one officer.*

She read further.

*The problem is everyone who decided silence was easier.*

Renee felt tears threaten.

She pushed them back.

A sound came from the hallway.

A door opening.

Everyone turned.

An older man stood there.

Gray hair.

Expensive watch.

A scar across his wrist.

The same scar from the video.

Grant Mercer.

Alive.

Older.

Smiling.

“You found my message.””

No one moved.

Officers reached for weapons.

Mercer raised his hands.

“I’m unarmed.””

Renee stared at him.

“You walked into headquarters.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He looked directly at her.

“Because you were looking for the truth.””

She stepped forward.

“You destroyed lives.””

Mercer tilted his head.

“And you think you’re different?””

Renee stopped.

“What does that mean?””

He smiled.

“Ask yourself why your own department hid your father’s investigation.””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew.

The truth was finally standing in front of them.

But Mercer wasn’t finished.

He looked at Renee.

“The badge didn’t protect people.””

May you like

He glanced around.

“It protected the people wearing it.””
