Chapter 6: The Night Mercer Vanished

The first sound Renee heard was Mark Dalton’s breathing.

Not the alarm.

Not the faint hum of the emergency lights.

Not the officers shouting somewhere beyond the locked archive room.

Just Mark.

A man who had spent the last several minutes watching his entire life collapse in front of him.

“Commander…” he whispered.

Renee kept her eyes on him.

“Start talking.””

Mark looked toward the security camera in the corner.

“He’s listening.””

“Good.””

Renee stepped closer.

“Then he can hear you explain why your name just appeared on my phone.””

Mark swallowed.

“I didn’t kill anyone.””

The sentence came too quickly.

Renee noticed.

“I didn’t ask if you killed anyone.””

Mark looked down.

“I know.””

“Then why did you say that?””

He didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

Renee had interviewed hundreds of people during internal investigations.

The innocent usually started with facts.

The guilty usually started with defenses.

“What happened the night Mercer disappeared?”” she asked.

Mark remained silent.

“Officer Dalton.””

His shoulders lowered.

“I was twenty-six.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

He rubbed his hands together.

“I was twenty-six, scared, and stupid.””

Renee waited.

Mark finally looked at her.

“Mercer called me that night.””

“Why?””

“He said he needed help.””

“With what?””

“He didn’t tell me.””

Renee’s expression hardened.

“You went anyway.””

Mark nodded.

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“An abandoned warehouse near the old training facility.””

Renee’s eyes narrowed.

“Why would a rookie officer meet a former officer at an abandoned warehouse?””

Mark looked ashamed.

“Because I trusted him.””

The words hung in the air.

Renee understood that.

People rarely followed bad people because they believed they were bad.

They followed because, at some point, that person had made them feel protected.

“What happened when you arrived?””

Mark took a breath.

“Mercer was there. Captain Hale was there too.””

Renee glanced at Victor.

The captain looked away.

“You knew?””

Victor nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Mark continued.

“They were arguing.””

“About what?””

“Reports.””

“Which reports?””

Mark looked at the floor.

“Mine.””

The room became quiet.

Renee stepped closer.

“Explain.””

“Mercer wanted me to change a statement.””

“What statement?””

“A traffic stop.””

“Your traffic stop?””

Mark nodded.

“A man had refused to cooperate. Mercer said I needed to make him look more aggressive in the report.””

“Did you?””

Mark’s silence answered.

Renee’s voice became colder.

“Did you change it?””

“Yes.””

The word barely left his mouth.

“I changed two sentences.””

“And those two sentences changed the entire story.””

“Yes.””

Renee looked away.

Not because she was surprised.

Because she was disappointed.

“What happened at the warehouse?””

Mark continued.

“Mercer had proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That other officers had done the same thing.””

Renee looked at Victor.

The captain said nothing.

Mark continued.

“He said everyone was connected. Everyone had something to lose.””

“And then?””

“He and Captain Hale started arguing.””

Victor finally spoke.

“I told him to turn himself in.””

Mark looked at him.

“You told him?””

Victor nodded.

“Yes.””

“And Mercer laughed.””

The captain closed his eyes.

“He said people like me didn’t get to pretend they were honest anymore.””

Renee watched both men.

“What happened next?””

Mark’s voice became quieter.

“Mercer left.””

“Where did he go?””

“I don’t know.””

“Someone does.””

Mark looked toward the locked door.

“I saw someone else there.””

Renee froze.

“Who?””

Mark hesitated.

“Your assistant.””

The room changed instantly.

“Maya?””

Mark nodded.

“I didn’t know her name then.””

Renee stared at him.

“When did you see her?””

“That night.””

“And you never reported it?””

Mark looked broken.

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because Mercer told me if I talked, he would release the reports.””

Renee stepped back.

The puzzle pieces moved.

Not into place.

Into something much darker.

“You were being controlled.””

“Yes.””

“But you protected Mercer.””

“Yes.””

“Even after knowing what he did.””

Mark nodded.

“Yes.””

The honesty made it worse.

Renee turned toward Victor.

“And you?””

Victor looked exhausted.

“I protected the department.””

“No.””

Renee’s voice sharpened.

“You protected yourself.””

Victor didn’t argue.

Then the lights returned.

The archive door unlocked.

Immediately, officers rushed inside.

Captain Hale looked around.

“Everyone okay?””

Renee ignored him.

She walked directly to the security terminal.

The cameras had been restored.

She pulled up the archive hallway footage.

The screen showed exactly what she expected.

Someone had entered during the blackout.

Someone had left something behind.

A small envelope.

Renee zoomed in.

The person wore a hood.

But the hands were visible.

A silver ring.

A distinctive scar across the wrist.

Renee knew those hands.

She had seen them every day for months.

The video paused.

Mark looked at the screen.

“Who is that?””

Renee didn’t answer.

Because she already knew.

The person who had been feeding her clues.

The person who had pushed the investigation forward.

The person who claimed to want the truth.

May you like

Was the same person hiding it.

Maya Collins.
