Chapter 4: The Brother Behind the Scheme

Richard Hale arrived at the mansion that afternoon without an invitation.

His black SUV rolled through the iron gates at 2:17 p.m., crossed the circular driveway, and stopped beside the fountain. He emerged wearing a navy blazer, polished loafers, and the easy smile of a man who believed every problem could be solved with charm.

David watched him approach through the living room window.

“Why is your brother here?”” he asked Vanessa.

She stood beside the fireplace, holding a glass of water.

“I invited him.””

“Why?””

“He's family.””

“That's not an answer.””

Vanessa set the glass down.

“Richard has been under a lot of pressure lately. I thought it might help if we all talked.””

David turned away from the window.

“About what?””

“Business.””

“What business?””

Before she could answer, the doorbell rang.

Vanessa moved to open it, but David reached the foyer first.

Richard stepped inside and spread his arms.

“David! Good to see you, man.””

David didn't return the gesture.

“Richard.””

The smile faltered.

“Everything okay?””

“You tell me.””

Richard glanced at Vanessa.

She gave him a small, nearly imperceptible nod.

David noticed.

“Come into the study,” he said.

Richard followed him, leaving Vanessa in the foyer.

Inside the study, David shut the door.

“Do you know a company called Sterling Asset Solutions?””

Richard's expression barely changed.

“Sounds familiar.””

“Your name is listed as its director.””

Richard shrugged.

“I have investments in several companies.””

“Is Sterling one of them?””

“Possibly.””

“Does the company have anything to do with Carter Construction?””

Richard laughed.

“Come on, David. You know I wouldn't touch your company without talking to you.””

“Did you?””

Richard's smile faded.

“Did I what?””

“Attempt to transfer eighty-five thousand dollars from one of my accounts?””

For a moment, Richard looked genuinely startled.

Then he leaned back in his chair.

“That's a serious accusation.””

“It's a serious transaction.””

“I have no idea what you're talking about.””

David placed a printed company registration on the desk.

Richard looked at it.

His jaw tightened.

“Where did you get this?””

“From public records.””

“You went digging through my business?””

“You registered a company using your name. That's hardly a secret.””

Richard pushed the paper away.

“Look, Sterling is a consulting company. We help small businesses organize their assets. That's all.””

“Then why was a company bank account used in an attempt to move money into an account associated with your company?””

Richard stood.

“I didn't authorize any transfer.””

“Sit down.””

“David—”

“Sit. Down.””

Richard hesitated, then lowered himself into the chair.

David folded his arms.

“Who gave you access to my company's banking information?””

“No one.””

“Who told you about my daughter's trust?””

Richard looked toward the door.

David's voice sharpened.

“Look at me when I'm talking to you.””

Richard turned back.

“I don't know anything about Lily's trust.””

“Then why did your company become involved in a transaction bearing her name?””

“I told you, I don't know.””

David studied him.

Richard had always been a poor liar. When he was nervous, he rubbed his thumb against the side of his index finger.

He was doing it now.

“Richard,” David said quietly, “you have one chance to tell me the truth before I involve the authorities.””

Richard swallowed.

“I didn't take the money.””

“That's not what I asked.””

“I didn't take it.””

“Who submitted the request?””

Richard stared at the desk.

“I don't know.””

David stood and opened the study door.

“Then we're finished.””

Richard jumped up.

“Wait.””

David paused.

Richard rubbed his hands together.

“Vanessa said you were having problems with your daughter. She told me there might be a way to restructure the trust and make the assets more accessible to the family.””

David turned slowly.

“Accessible to which family?””

Richard's face reddened.

“To everyone. She said it would help you both.””

“Did she tell you the trust was irrevocable?””

“No.””

“Did she tell you that Lily was the primary beneficiary?””

Richard said nothing.

“Did she tell you that changing the trust without legal authority could be fraud?””

“I didn't know it was fraud!””

“You didn't think to ask?””

Richard's temper flared.

“I'm trying to help my sister! She's been living in your shadow for years, David. Everything revolves around your company, your daughter, your money. Vanessa wanted some security of her own.””

David stared at him.

“Security?””

“She's your wife.””

“And Lily is my child.””

Richard scoffed.

“There it is again.””

David moved closer.

“You know what your problem is, Richard? You believe that because someone has money, everyone around them is entitled to a piece of it.””

Richard's face hardened.

“Maybe your wife deserves more than being treated like a housekeeper.””

“She has a home, a life, and access to the resources we agreed upon when we married. What she doesn't have is the right to steal from my company or manipulate my daughter's inheritance.””

Richard's eyes widened.

“Steal? Nobody stole anything!””

“An unauthorized transfer was attempted.””

“And it was stopped!””

“Because the bank flagged it.””

Richard looked away.

David understood then that the man knew more than he had admitted.

“Who told you the bank would approve it?”” David asked.

Richard remained silent.

“Richard.””

His brother-in-law exhaled sharply.

“Vanessa said she had the paperwork handled.””

David felt the room tilt.

“Which paperwork?””

“The company transfer. The trust forms. Everything.””

“Did you sign anything?””

Richard hesitated.

“Yes.””

“What?””

“A consulting agreement. It gave Sterling permission to receive certain payments if a restructuring plan was approved.””

“What restructuring plan?””

Richard looked frightened now.

“I thought it was legitimate.””

David pressed both hands against the desk.

“Did you know your sister had been using a device registered to her to access my company's banking system?””

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

“Did you know someone had created fake emails under Lily's name?””

“No.””

“Did you know your company was listed on documents connected to my daughter's trust?””

Richard's face had gone pale.

“No.””

David stepped back.

“Then I suggest you call your lawyer.””

Richard stared at him.

“Are you going to report me?””

“If the evidence shows you participated in an attempted financial crime, yes.””

Richard's mouth opened.

“David, come on. We're family.””

“Family doesn't make fraud acceptable.””

Richard grabbed his jacket.

“Vanessa will never forgive you for this.””

David looked him straight in the eye.

“I'm more concerned about what she has done than whether she forgives me.””

Richard left without another word.

David remained in the study for several minutes, listening to the sound of the front door closing.

Then he walked into the living room.

Vanessa stood beside the fireplace, her expression carefully arranged into one of wounded innocence.

“What did you say to him?””

David stopped a few feet away.

“I asked him about Sterling Asset Solutions.””

Her fingers tightened around the glass.

“And?””

“He admitted you discussed restructuring the trust with him.””

Vanessa laughed.

“That's absurd.””

“He said you told him the paperwork was handled.””

“Richard is a liar when he's frightened.””

“Is that why he was frightened?””

She set the glass down hard enough to make the water jump.

“You have no right to interrogate my family!””

“Your family has inserted itself into my company's finances.””

“Your company, your money, your daughter. That's all you ever care about.””

David stared at her.

“What do you care about, Vanessa?””

She blinked.

“What?””

“What do you actually want?””

“I want a husband who respects me!””

“You want access to a trust that doesn't belong to you?””

Her face went white.

For several seconds, she didn't speak.

Then she laughed, sharp and disbelieving.

“So that's what this is about. Lily has been telling stories.””

“No. Marcus found the transaction. Thomas confirmed you contacted his office. Your brother admitted you discussed restructuring the trust.””

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

“Thomas should have minded his own business.””

David's stomach tightened.

“You did contact him.””

She looked away.

“I asked a question.””

“You told him I wanted to change the trust.””

“I was trying to understand our financial future!””

“Your financial future is not my daughter's inheritance.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Do you have any idea what it's like being married to a man who treats his dead wife like a saint and his living wife like a suspect?””

David's expression softened for a moment, not with forgiveness but with recognition of the bitterness that had been growing between them.

“Rachel isn't the problem, Vanessa.””

“She's always the problem!””

The words erupted from her.

“She gets to be remembered as perfect. She gets the money, the trust, the photographs, the sentimental stories. And I get to spend my life standing in the shadow of a woman who isn't even alive!””

David stared at her.

Lily had entered the hallway and was standing just beyond the doorway.

She heard every word.

Vanessa saw her.

For an instant, her face shifted from anger to embarrassment.

Then she pointed at Lily.

“And you! You have no idea what your presence has cost me.””

Lily took a slow breath.

“I never asked you to compete with my mother.””

“You don't have to. You walk into a room, and your father forgets I exist.””

David stepped forward.

“That's enough.””

“No!”” Vanessa shouted.

“I'm tired of being told to be quiet in my own house!””

“You're not being told to be quiet. You're being told to stop attacking my daughter.””

Vanessa grabbed a framed photograph from the mantelpiece.

It showed David, Rachel, and eight-year-old Lily at the beach.

“Look at this!”” she cried.

“Even after all these years, her face is everywhere!””

She hurled the frame toward the sofa.

The glass shattered against the wooden floor.

Lily gasped.

David stared at the broken photograph.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“Go upstairs.””

She laughed bitterly.

“Or what?””

“Go upstairs before you say something you can't take back.””

Vanessa's eyes filled with furious tears.

“You would choose her over me.””

David's voice was quiet.

“I will always protect my daughter.””

Vanessa stared at him for a long moment.

Then she turned and stormed upstairs.

Lily knelt beside the broken frame.

David moved to stop her, but she had already picked up the photograph.

The glass had cracked across Rachel's face.

Lily's fingers trembled.

“She hated Mom,” she whispered.

David knelt beside her.

“She hated what she thought Mom represented.””

“Is that supposed to make it better?””

“No.””

He took the photograph gently from her hands.

“I'm sorry.””

Lily looked at the shattered glass.

“I think she's going to do something worse.””

David wanted to reassure her.

He wanted to promise that the worst was over.

But his phone vibrated before he could speak.

A message from Marcus appeared.

*Urgent. I found a second transfer request. This one is for $420,000. It was scheduled to execute tomorrow morning.*

David stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

*The beneficiary isn't Sterling Asset Solutions. It's a private account registered under Vanessa Carter's maiden name.*

David looked toward the staircase.

Vanessa had not merely been trying to push Lily out of the house.

May you like

She had been preparing to take hundreds of thousands of dollars.

And the transfer was scheduled for the following morning.
