Chapter 2: The Money in Her Name

David didn't move.

For several seconds, he simply stared at his daughter, trying to reconcile the frightened nineteen-year-old standing on the staircase with the accusation that had just been placed between them.

“You know who received the money?”” he asked.

Lily descended slowly, one hand gripping the wooden railing.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

She glanced toward the hallway leading to Vanessa's private sitting room.

David followed her gaze.

“Lily, look at me.””

She did.

“I'm not asking you to protect anyone. I need the truth.””

Lily pressed her lips together.

“I didn't steal anything.””

“I believe you.””

The answer came so quickly that she almost started crying.

“You do?””

“Yes. But I need to understand what happened.””

Before she could respond, Vanessa appeared in the doorway behind them.

“That's convenient,” she said.

“She gets one question, and you believe her immediately.””

David turned.

“Not now, Vanessa.””

“No, absolutely now. I have spent months watching you dismiss everything I say because your daughter looks at you with those sad little eyes.””

Lily flinched.

David stepped between them.

“Don't speak about her that way.””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Fine. Let her explain the money.””

Lily's fingers trembled.

“I can't explain everything here.””

“Why not?”” Vanessa demanded.

“Afraid your father might hear something he doesn't like?””

“Because you keep interrupting me!””

The words burst out before Lily could stop them.

Silence followed.

Vanessa blinked.

Lily looked almost frightened by her own voice, but she didn't retreat.

“You've been telling me to leave since I came home. You moved my things out of the guest room. You told the housekeeper not to prepare breakfast for me. Yesterday, you said Dad was going to get tired of defending me and send me away himself.””

David turned toward his wife.

“You told her that?””

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“I told her she needed to learn independence.””

“You told me I was a burden,” Lily said.

“I told you the truth.””

“No,” David interrupted.

“You told her what you wanted her to believe.””

Vanessa's face hardened.

“Fine. Since everyone is determined to make me the villain, I'll leave you two to your little investigation.””

She turned and walked away, her heels striking the marble.

But she didn't go far.

David could see her reflection in the glass cabinet at the end of the hallway. She stopped just beyond the doorway, where she could still hear them.

He lowered his voice.

“Let's go into my office.””

Lily nodded.

They walked together down the corridor, past photographs of David at construction sites, award ceremonies, and charity events. In the largest photograph, Lily was eight years old, sitting on his shoulders at a county fair.

Her mother, Rachel, had taken that picture.

Rachel had died when Lily was ten, leaving David to raise their daughter while building a business that had been struggling to survive.

He had promised himself that Lily would never feel alone.

Now he wondered how long she had been feeling exactly that.

Inside the office, David closed the door.

“Sit down, sweetheart.””

Lily lowered herself into the leather chair opposite his desk.

He sat across from her.

“Start from the beginning.””

She rubbed her palms against her jeans.

“Three weeks ago, I came home for a weekend because I needed my birth certificate. The college was helping me apply for a scholarship, and they needed some documents.””

“Okay.””

“I went into your office because I remembered you kept the family paperwork in the bottom drawer.””

David nodded.

“That drawer is usually locked.””

“It wasn't that day.””

He frowned.

“Go on.””

“I found the birth certificate. But there were other papers underneath it. Bank statements, copies of company checks, and something with my name on it.””

“What kind of something?””

“A beneficiary form.””

David leaned forward.

“What did it say?””

Lily took a shaky breath.

“It said that a trust had been created for me years ago. Mom's name was on it.””

David went still.

Rachel had left a modest life insurance policy when she died, along with savings she had accumulated before marrying him. David had invested the money for Lily's future, intending to give her access when she turned twenty-one.

He had never discussed the details with Vanessa.

He had barely discussed them with anyone.

“Did you take those documents?”” he asked.

“No. I read the first page, took a picture of it, and put everything back.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I thought you already knew.””

David looked down at his desk.

“What else did you find?””

Lily hesitated.

“There was a letter from a bank. It said someone had requested a change to the trust's authorized contact information.””

David's eyes narrowed.

“Whose name was on the request?””

Lily swallowed.

“Vanessa's.””

The room seemed to shrink around him.

“Why would Vanessa have access to your trust?””

“I don't know. But the letter said the request had been denied because the signature on the form didn't match the original records.””

David leaned back slowly.

“Did you tell her you saw it?””

“No.””

“Did you tell anyone?””

Lily shook her head.

“Not until yesterday.””

“Who did you tell?””

“Marcus.””

David stared at her.

“My CFO?””

“Yes. I didn't know what else to do. I remembered you telling me to call him if I ever found anything strange involving the company.””

David remembered.

Years earlier, when Lily had been sixteen, a contractor had tried to pressure her into signing paperwork she didn't understand during a company charity event. David had told her that if anything ever felt wrong, she should contact Marcus or him immediately.

“I emailed Marcus,” Lily continued.

“I asked if he could help me understand the trust paperwork. I didn't know if it was connected to the company.””

“Did he reply?””

“He asked me to meet him at the office yesterday.””

David's expression sharpened.

“What happened there?””

“He showed me a transfer request. He said someone had attempted to move money through a company account, and the paperwork had my name on it.””

“The eighty-five thousand dollars?””

Lily nodded.

“But Marcus said the transfer had been flagged. He told me the money never reached my account.””

David exhaled.

That explained why Lily knew about the transaction.

It did not explain Vanessa's photograph.

“Did you see the original transfer authorization?””

“Yes.””

“Was my signature on it?””

Lily looked down.

“It looked like your signature.””

David's stomach tightened.

“But you knew I hadn't signed it?””

“I knew you hadn't told me about any transfer. And I knew the account number wasn't mine.””

She reached into her sweater pocket and pulled out her phone.

“I took a picture of the paperwork because Marcus said he needed to preserve the original. I thought you'd want to see it.””

David studied the image she showed him.

The company logo was genuine.

The account number belonged to an unfamiliar bank.

The signature resembled his own, down to the slight upward curve at the end of his last name.

But something else caught his attention.

The authorization date.

It was the same day David had spent fourteen hours at a construction site in Savannah, where a structural inspection had delayed the opening of a major commercial project.

He had not been home.

He had not signed anything.

“Lily,” he said quietly, “did Marcus tell you who submitted the paperwork?””

“No.””

“Did you ask?””

“Yes. He said he couldn't disclose the details until the bank finished its review.””

David nodded.

That was reasonable.

Marcus had always been careful about financial investigations.

Still, something didn't sit right.

“Did he tell you why Vanessa was involved with the trust?””

“No. I only saw her name on the request.””

David leaned back and rubbed his forehead.

For years, he had believed the tension between Vanessa and Lily was ordinary family friction. He had dismissed the sharp remarks, the cold silences, and the little punishments as disagreements that would eventually fade.

Perhaps he had been wrong.

Perhaps he had been looking at the wrong problem.

A knock sounded at the door.

Before David could answer, Vanessa entered.

She held her phone in one hand and a folded sheet of paper in the other.

“I hope this investigation is going well,” she said.

David stood.

“Get out.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“Excuse me?””

“You heard me. I'm speaking to my daughter.””

“And I'm your wife.””

“Then act like one.””

Her cheeks flushed.

She placed the folded paper on his desk.

“I thought you might want to see this.””

David didn't touch it.

“What is it?””

“A bank notification.””

He unfolded the paper.

It was a printed email from a financial institution, informing the recipient that a transfer request had been flagged for verification.

The account number was partially hidden.

But the recipient's name was clear.

Lily Carter.

David looked up.

“Where did you get this?””

“It was forwarded to our home email address.””

“By whom?””

“I don't know.””

“You expect me to believe a bank sent confidential information about my daughter's account to a shared household email?””

Vanessa's lips tightened.

“I'm not a bank investigator, David.””

“No. But you're acting like one.””

She leaned forward and tapped the paper.

“The money was connected to her name. Her name was on the paperwork. She was in your office. And now she's telling you she knows who did it without giving you an answer.””

Lily stood abruptly.

“I did give him an answer!””

Vanessa turned on her.

“Then say it again. Who took the money?””

“I don't know who submitted the transfer!””

“But you know who tried to change your trust information.””

Lily's face went white.

Vanessa smiled faintly.

There it was.

The detail Lily had shared with her father in private had somehow become part of Vanessa's argument.

David noticed.

His eyes moved from his daughter to his wife.

“How did you know about the trust request?””

Vanessa's smile vanished.

“I saw the document.””

“Where?””

“In your office.””

“When?””

“Yesterday.””

David's voice dropped.

“You told me you found the transfer photograph on your phone. You never said anything about a trust document.””

Vanessa straightened.

“Does it matter?””

“Yes.””

“Why? Because Lily is allowed to look through your files, but I'm not allowed to?””

“Looking through my files isn't the issue. Why were you examining documents related to my daughter's inheritance?””

Vanessa's expression changed.

For the first time, she seemed unable to find a quick answer.

Then she did something David hadn't expected.

She looked at Lily and said, “Ask your father why he never told you that your mother left you more than two million dollars.””

Lily's knees nearly buckled.

David felt as though someone had struck him in the chest.

“Vanessa,” he said, “stop talking.””

But she had already turned back to Lily.

“Your mother left you a trust worth millions. Your father has been managing it for years. And now money is disappearing, paperwork is being changed, and everyone expects me to sit quietly while you pretend you know nothing.””

Lily stared at her father.

“Dad?””

David couldn't answer immediately.

The trust had originally contained life insurance proceeds, investments, and shares in a small property company Rachel had inherited from her parents. Over the years, the assets had grown substantially.

He had intended to explain everything to Lily when she was older.

He had not expected Vanessa to weaponize it.

“It's true,” he finally said.

“Your mother left you a trust. I manage it until you're old enough to take control under the terms she established.””

“How much is in it?””

“Approximately two point four million dollars, based on the last valuation.””

Lily sank back into the chair.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“I wanted you to grow up without feeling that money defined your life. I also wanted to protect you from people who might take advantage of you.””

Her eyes filled.

“Then why did you let Vanessa treat me like I was stealing from you?””

David looked stricken.

“I didn't know she was doing this.””

“You knew she didn't want me here.””

He had no answer.

Lily wiped her face and picked up her phone.

“I need some air.””

“Lily—”

“I need to think.””

She walked toward the door.

Vanessa moved aside with a look of satisfaction, but David caught it.

“Don't,” he said.

She looked at him innocently.

“Don't what?””

“Whatever you're planning, stop.””

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“You have no idea what I'm planning.””

Lily left the office.

David started after her, but Vanessa caught his arm.

“You need to make a decision,” she said.

“Let go of me.””

“Your daughter has access to millions of dollars. You cannot keep treating her like a helpless child.””

David pulled his arm free.

“And you cannot keep treating her like a criminal without evidence.””

He left the office.

Outside, he found Lily standing beside the fountain, her arms wrapped around herself as water glittered in the sunlight.

He approached slowly.

“Sweetheart.””

She didn't turn.

“Did Mom really leave me that much money?””

“Yes.””

“Did you know Vanessa was trying to change the paperwork?””

“No.””

“Do you think I took the money?””

David's heart twisted.

“No. I don't.””

She finally looked at him.

“Then why did you ask me?””

“Because I needed to hear what happened.””

“You could have asked without making me feel like I was on trial.””

He nodded slowly.

“You're right.””

The admission surprised her.

David sat on the edge of the fountain, his expensive trousers darkening where the water splashed against the stone.

“I've spent so much time trying to provide for you that I forgot something important.””

Lily said nothing.

“I thought keeping a roof over your head and paying for college meant I was protecting you. But I should have noticed what was happening right in front of me.””

Her eyes brimmed with tears.

“I don't want your money, Dad. I don't care about the trust. I just want to come home without wondering what she'll do to me.””

David stood and pulled her into his arms.

“You will never have to earn your place in my life.””

For a moment, she clung to him as she had when she was a little girl.

Then his phone rang.

Marcus.

David answered immediately.

“Tell me you've found something.””

Marcus's voice sounded strained.

“I found the original transfer request. And David, you need to come to the office.””

“Why?””

“Because the authorization wasn't submitted under your usual account.””

David frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means someone used your digital signature credentials, but the login came from a device registered to the house.””

David looked back at the mansion.

“Whose device?””

May you like

Marcus hesitated.

“It's registered under Vanessa Carter.””
