Chapter 3: The Woman Who Wanted Everything

David didn't tell Lily what Marcus had discovered.

Not yet.

She had endured enough for one morning, and the last thing he wanted was to watch her face crumble again beneath another accusation.

Instead, he drove her to a small café in downtown Atlanta, where Rachel used to take them for pancakes on Saturday mornings.

Lily sat across from him in a corner booth, stirring a cup of hot chocolate she hadn't touched.

“Do you remember this place?”” David asked.

She nodded.

“Mom used to order pancakes even when she said she wasn't hungry.””

“And then she'd eat half of yours.””

Lily smiled faintly.

“She always said yours tasted better.””

“She said that because I put too much syrup on everything.””

For a few minutes, they talked about Rachel. The conversation was quiet, almost ordinary. David could see Lily relaxing, her shoulders lowering as the memories reminded her that not every part of her life had become tangled in Vanessa's resentment.

Then his phone vibrated.

A message from Marcus appeared.

*The login came from the home office network. The device identifier matches a tablet assigned to Vanessa.*

David read it twice.

He had bought Vanessa that tablet the previous Christmas.

She used it for online shopping, travel arrangements, and managing the household staff. It had access to the home Wi-Fi, but it should never have had access to his company's banking credentials.

“Dad?”” Lily asked.

He locked his phone.

“I'm sorry. Work.””

“Is it about the money?””

He hesitated.

“Yes.””

“Do you think Vanessa did it?””

David looked at his daughter.

“I think someone used a device registered to her. That doesn't prove she submitted the transfer.””

Lily nodded slowly.

“That's fair.””

Her answer surprised him.

After everything Vanessa had said, Lily was still willing to distinguish suspicion from proof.

David reached across the table and covered her hand with his.

“I'm going to find out what happened.””

“What if it was her?””

“Then I'll deal with it.””

“And what if she says I did it?””

“Then she'll have to prove it.””

Lily looked down at their joined hands.

“I wish Mom were here.””

David's throat tightened.

“So do I, sweetheart.””

When they returned to the mansion, Vanessa was waiting in the living room.

She had changed into a cream blouse and black trousers. A cup of tea sat on the coffee table beside an open laptop.

She looked composed.

Too composed.

“Where have you been?”” she asked.

“Out with my daughter,” David replied.

“Without telling me?””

“I don't need permission to take Lily to breakfast.””

Vanessa closed the laptop.

“Of course not. You don't need permission for anything when it comes to her.””

David placed his keys on the side table.

“We need to discuss the company transfer.””

Vanessa's expression barely changed.

“What about it?””

“The login came from a device registered to you.””

She blinked once.

Then she laughed.

“That's ridiculous.””

“Is it?””

“I have a tablet. Half the household has access to the Wi-Fi.””

“The transaction required authenticated credentials.””

“I don't even know how to access your company's banking system.””

David watched her closely.

“Then you won't mind if the investigators examine the device.””

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

“Investigators?””

“Marcus has preserved the records. Our bank's fraud team will review the transaction.””

“You're calling investigators over a transfer that never happened?””

“An unauthorized transfer was attempted. That's serious.””

Vanessa rose from the sofa.

“And what about Lily? Are you going to investigate her too?””

“If the evidence leads to her, yes.””

Lily stood near the staircase, having entered the room quietly.

Vanessa pointed toward her.

“She's the one who went into your office. She's the one whose name appeared on the transfer. She's the one who has been hiding things from you.””

“Stop pointing at her,” David said.

“Why? Because you can't bear to hear anything negative about your precious child?””

“Because I'm tired of watching you accuse her without proof.””

Vanessa's face flushed.

“Then perhaps you should ask her why she has been meeting with Marcus behind your back.””

Lily frowned.

“I met with him once.””

“Once that you admitted to.””

“Vanessa,” David warned.

But she continued.

“I also found messages on the family computer. Messages about your trust. About transferring assets. About changing the account information.””

David turned toward Lily.

“Did you send messages about transferring assets?””

“No. I emailed Marcus asking about the trust documents.””

Vanessa grabbed her laptop and opened it.

“Then explain this.””

She turned the screen toward David.

An email conversation appeared. The sender's address resembled Lily's college email account. The message discussed moving money from the trust into a private account and changing the authorized contact.

The wording was formal.

The timestamps were recent.

And the signature at the bottom read Lily Carter.

David stared at the screen.

Lily stepped closer.

“That's not my email.””

Vanessa let out a bitter laugh.

“Of course it isn't.””

“I've never written that message!””

“Then someone must have stolen your identity. How convenient.””

Lily looked at David.

“Dad, check the address. Mine ends in dot edu. That one doesn't.””

David leaned closer.

She was right.

The displayed address contained an extra letter.

It was subtle, the kind of difference someone might overlook at a glance.

“Where did you get this?”” David asked.

“From the family computer.””

“Which browser?””

Vanessa frowned.

“What?””

“Which browser did you use to find the email?””

“I don't remember.””

“Then how do you know it came from the family computer?””

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

“I saw it there yesterday.””

David closed the laptop.

“I'm not making a decision based on screenshots.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“You're calling me a liar.””

“I'm saying the evidence needs to be verified.””

“You never question Lily like this.””

“I just asked her about the transfer. She answered me. Now I'm asking you about the source of these messages.””

For the first time, Vanessa appeared genuinely angry rather than merely offended.

She slammed the laptop shut.

“Fine. Investigate me. Search my tablet.

Search my email. Tear this house apart if it makes you happy.””

She walked toward the staircase, then stopped.

“But when you discover what your daughter has been doing, don't expect me to apologize for trying to protect our family.””

David waited until she disappeared upstairs.

Then he turned to Lily.

“Did you ever use the family computer to access your college email?””

“No.””

“Could someone else have accessed your account?””

“I have two-factor authentication. And the email address on that screen isn't mine.””

David nodded.

“I'm going to have Marcus verify everything.””

Lily hesitated.

“Dad, there's something else.””

He looked at her.

“What is it?””

“When I went into your office yesterday, I saw a folder with Mom's name on it. It was open on your desk.””

David's expression changed.

“What folder?””

“It said Rachel Carter Trust. There were copies of old bank statements inside. And a letter from a lawyer.””

“What did the letter say?””

“I didn't read the whole thing. But I saw a sentence about the trust being irrevocable.””

David went very still.

An irrevocable trust could not simply be altered because someone wanted to change the beneficiary or control the assets. Its terms could be modified only under specific legal conditions.

Rachel had established the trust with an attorney before her death.

Vanessa had no authority over it.

Unless someone had convinced the bank otherwise.

“Did you see the lawyer's name?”” he asked.

“Thomas Whitaker.””

David knew the name. Whitaker had represented Rachel during the trust's creation and had continued advising the family after her death.

“Why didn't you tell me earlier?””

“I was going to. Then Vanessa started shouting about the money, and I got scared.””

David took a slow breath.

“You should never be afraid to tell me something.””

“I know.””

“No, sweetheart. I need you to believe it.””

Lily nodded, but he could see that belief would take time.

David called Thomas Whitaker from his office.

The attorney answered on the third ring.

“David. What can I do for you?””

“I need to discuss Rachel's trust. Has anyone contacted you about changing the authorized parties or transferring assets?””

There was a pause.

“Yes,” Thomas replied.

David gripped the edge of his desk.

“Who?””

“Your wife contacted my office approximately two weeks ago. She said you wanted to revise the trust administration arrangements.””

“Did I?””

“No. I called your personal number to confirm, and you told me you had made no such request.””

David closed his eyes briefly.

“What did she ask you to change?””

“She wanted herself listed as an authorized representative and requested a review of the distribution provisions.””

“Was that legally possible?””

“Not in the way she described. Rachel's trust is irrevocable, and the beneficiaries are explicitly defined. Your daughter is the primary beneficiary. You are the trustee, subject to the terms of the instrument.””

David's jaw tightened.

“Did you tell Vanessa that?””

“I did. She wasn't pleased.””

“What did she say?””

Thomas lowered his voice.

“She said that if you ever became incapacitated, someone would need to take control of the assets. She asked whether a spouse could challenge the existing arrangements.””

David stared out the office window.

“Did you give her any documents?””

“No. I sent her a written explanation of the trust restrictions.””

“Please send me a copy.””

“I'll have it to you within the hour.””

David ended the call.

He remained at his desk, staring at the framed photograph of Rachel beside the computer.

Rachel had trusted him to protect their daughter.

She had trusted him to preserve the money she had set aside for Lily's future.

And someone had been trying to get around those protections.

Someone who lived in his house.

A soft knock came at the door.

Lily entered, carrying a small envelope.

“I found this in my bedroom.””

David looked at it.

“What's inside?””

“I don't know. It was under the door.””

He took the envelope.

There was no return address, only Lily's name written in black ink.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

The message was typed.

*If you want to know why Vanessa needs you out of the house, ask your father what happened to the money your mother left him.*

Lily's face went pale.

David read the message again.

“What money?”” she whispered.

He looked at her.

“I don't know.””

But even as he spoke, an old memory surfaced.

A year after Rachel died, David had transferred a substantial portion of her insurance proceeds into an investment account while the trust was being established. He had handled the paperwork himself, then left the details with the attorney and the bank.

He had assumed everything was secure.

Now he wondered whether someone had discovered a weakness in the records.

“Dad,” Lily said, “do you think someone is trying to make us fight?””

David folded the paper.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

He looked toward the closed office door.

“I don't know yet.””

At that exact moment, his phone rang.

Marcus.

David answered.

“Tell me you have the original documents.””

“I do,” Marcus replied.

“And there's something you need to see.””

“What?””

“The transfer request wasn't just submitted from Vanessa's device.””

David straightened.

“What else?””

“Someone changed the account's recovery email three days before the transfer was attempted. The new address belongs to a company called Sterling Asset Solutions.””

David frowned.

“I've never heard of it.””

“Neither had I. So I checked the registration.””

Marcus paused.

“David, Sterling Asset Solutions was incorporated six months ago. Its registered agent is a law firm in Atlanta.””

“Which firm?””

“Whitaker, Lane, and Associates.””

David's blood ran cold.

“Thomas Whitaker's firm?””

“No,” Marcus replied.

“A different firm with a similar name. But there's something stranger.””

“What?””

“The company's listed director is Vanessa's brother, Richard Hale.””

David slowly lowered the phone.

Vanessa's brother had spent years asking David for loans, business opportunities, and introductions to investors. David had always refused to involve him in Carter Construction because Richard had a history of failed ventures and unpaid debts.

Now Richard's name was attached to a company connected to an attempted transfer of company funds.

David looked at Lily.

The note in her hand trembled.

The truth was beginning to take shape.

And it was far worse than a jealous stepmother trying to drive her stepdaughter away.
