Chapter 8: The Truth That Came Back

For a moment, nobody moved.

The world seemed frozen.

My mother.

Alive.

That word didn't make sense.

For ten years, I had lived with the idea that she was gone.

Not coming back.

Not calling.

Not knowing anything about my life.

But now Dad was saying she was alive.

“Where is she?”” I whispered.

Dad looked at his phone.

“They found her in another state.””

I couldn't breathe.

“Why didn't she contact me?””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew.

The next few hours felt unreal.

We drove.

We waited.

We asked questions.

And finally, we entered a small hospital room.

She was sitting by the window.

Older.

Different.

But still my mother.

The moment she saw me, her face broke.

“Maya.””

I stopped.

That voice.

I hadn't heard it in ten years.

I wanted to run to her.

I wanted to hug her.

I wanted to ask why.

Why did you leave?

Why didn't you fight harder?

Why didn't you find me?

Instead, I stood there.

Frozen.

She started crying.

“I thought I would never see you again.””

The anger inside me fought with the child who had missed her every single day.

“You left me.””

Her expression shattered.

“No.””

I looked away.

“That’s what everyone said.””

She shook her head.

“Everyone was wrong.””

Dad stepped closer.

“Tell us what happened.””

My mother took a deep breath.

“Nicole threatened me.””

The same words.

The same story.

Another person destroyed by fear.

“She told me if I fought for custody, she would ruin Marcus.””

Dad frowned.

“How?””

“She had been stealing money.””

The room went quiet.

“She planned everything. She knew exactly what to say. She knew who would believe her.””

My mother looked at me.

“She told me if I stayed, she would make sure you suffered.””

My heart broke.

“She used me.””

My mother nodded.

“Yes.””

Tears fell down her face.

“I thought I could come back after I found proof.””

“But you didn't.””

“No.””

She looked down.

“Because Nicole found me before I could.””

Dad stepped forward.

“What did she do?””

“She took my phone. She threatened my family. She made me believe that if I returned, Maya would be taken away forever.””

I looked at her.

“And you believed her?””

My mother closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

But it also helped.

Because for the first time, nobody was pretending.

Nobody was making excuses.

We all made mistakes.

Nicole just made them deliberately.

That evening, police investigators reviewed the evidence.

The money transfers.

The forged documents.

The threats.

The camera.

Everything.

But there was one final piece missing.

Proof that Nicole knew where my mother was all along.

Then Dad received another message.

This time from Nicole.

A video.

He played it.

And my blood ran cold.

It showed Nicole sitting in a chair.

Smiling.

Talking to someone off camera.

“I knew she would come back eventually.””

Dad froze.

Because Nicole continued.

“I just needed enough time.””

My mother covered her mouth.

The video continued.

Nicole laughed.

“She was always too emotional. That was her weakness.””

Then a voice asked:

“What about Maya?””

Nicole smiled.

And answered:

“She was easy.””

I felt sick.

Dad turned off the video.

But it was too late.

We had heard enough.

The woman who had raised me.

The woman who called herself family.

Had never seen me as a daughter.

Only as something to control.

But the next day, when investigators went to arrest Nicole…

They discovered she was gone.

And in her house, they found one thing waiting.

A letter addressed to me.
