Curious
She Hid Food Under Her Bed / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1: The Empty Plate

“Put that plate down, Maya! You've eaten enough!””

The words hit harder than the sound of the ceramic plate being ripped from my hands.

Nicole, my stepmother, grabbed my dinner before I could take a single bite. The chicken and potatoes slid across the table as she scraped them onto her own plate like she was cleaning up a mistake.

Everyone froze.

My little brother Jordan stopped moving his spoon. My father, Marcus, stared at her with a confused expression that I had rarely seen on his face.

“Nicole, what are you doing?”” Dad asked.

She didn't even look ashamed.

“Marcus, she doesn't need all this food. She's been snacking all afternoon.””

I stared down at my empty plate.

“That isn't true,” I whispered.

Nicole slowly turned toward me.

“Don't start, Maya.””

That voice.

That warning.

I knew it better than anyone.

It was the voice she used whenever Dad was gone. The voice that meant I should stay quiet. The voice that reminded me that this house had rules.

My stomach cramped painfully.

I had been waiting for dinner since I walked through the front door after school.

Lunch had been nothing but water because I had forgotten my lunch money and Nicole had refused to sign the school cafeteria form.

Breakfast had been half a glass of orange juice.

And now the only real meal I might get that day was sitting on Nicole's plate.

“Dad,” I said softly, “I haven't eaten.””

Nicole laughed.

“Oh, please. You always say that.””

Dad frowned.

“Maya, did you have lunch today?””

I looked down.

I wanted to answer.

I wanted to tell him everything.

I wanted to tell him that my jeans had become loose around my waist. That my teacher had asked why I looked tired. That I had started keeping crackers in my backpack because I never knew when hunger would become unbearable.

But Nicole was watching me.

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

Don't make trouble in this house.

That was what her stare said.

So I swallowed the truth.

“I'm fine.””

Dad didn't believe me.

He pushed his own plate toward me.

“Here, sweetheart. Eat mine.””

Nicole immediately reached across the table.

“Marcus! Don't encourage this behavior.””

He pulled the plate away.

“She’s hungry.””

For a moment, the room went silent.

Then Jordan spoke.

“Daddy, Maya doesn't eat in her room either.””

My heart stopped.

Everyone turned toward him.

Nicole's expression changed instantly.

“Jordan, finish your dinner.””

But he shook his head.

“She just drinks water.””

My hands started shaking.

“Jordan, please.””

He looked confused.

“But Maya, you told me you were saving it.””

Dad slowly lowered his fork.

“Saving what?””

Jordan pointed toward the hallway.

“The food in the box under her bed.””

Nicole stood so quickly her chair scraped against the floor.

“That’s enough. Jordan doesn't know what he's talking about.””

But Dad was already looking at me.

“Maya.””

I couldn't breathe.

“What box?””

I opened my mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because I knew exactly what was inside.

An old cardboard box hidden beneath my bed.

A few crackers.

Two bruised apples.

Pieces of bread wrapped carefully in napkins.

Food I had saved whenever I could.

Not because I wanted to hide snacks.

Because I was afraid tomorrow there would be nothing.

Dad stood.

“Sweetheart, please tell me.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“It’s nothing.””

The disappointment on his face hurt more than anger would have.

Before he could say anything, Jordan climbed down from his chair.

“I can show you, Daddy.””

Nicole stepped forward.

“Marcus, this is ridiculous.””

Dad moved between her and the hallway.

“Then you won't mind if I look.””

For the first time that night, Nicole looked nervous.

I followed them upstairs.

My legs felt weak.

Dad entered my room and immediately noticed how quiet it was. The walls were bare except for a few school certificates. My old stuffed rabbit sat on the corner of my bed, its fur worn from years of being held.

He knelt down.

Reached beneath the bed.

And pulled out the box.

Nobody spoke.

He opened the first napkin.

A dried piece of bread fell into his hand.

His face changed.

“Maya…”

I couldn't look at him.

“Why are you hiding food?””

I wiped my eyes.

“I don't know.””

But I did know.

Jordan stepped closer.

“Because she's scared, Daddy.””

Dad turned.

“Scared of what?””

Jordan looked at Nicole standing in the doorway.

Then he whispered:

“Because when you're at work, Mommy tells Maya she has to earn her dinner.””

The silence afterward felt like the whole house had stopped breathing.

Dad slowly turned toward Nicole.

“What exactly have you been doing to my daughter when I'm not home?””

Nicole opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, Jordan reached under my pillow.

He pulled out a folded piece of paper.

“Daddy,” he said quietly, “Maya keeps this too.””

My entire body went cold.

May you like

Because that paper contained Nicole's rules.

And at the bottom was the punishment for anyone who told Dad.
