Chapter 7: The Woman Who Knew

The woman in the photograph was standing beside a mailbox.

She looked older than Nicole.

Tired.

Like someone who had spent years carrying a secret.

The next morning, Dad and I drove to the address.

Neither of us spoke much.

I watched the houses pass by through the window.

Normal houses.

Normal families.

I wondered how many people were living behind closed doors with secrets nobody knew.

When we arrived, Dad knocked.

For almost a minute, nothing happened.

Then the door opened.

The woman from the picture stood there.

She looked at Dad.

Then at me.

And immediately covered her mouth.

“Oh my God.””

Dad stepped forward.

“Are you Claire?””

She nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“I’m Marcus.””

Her face changed.

“I know.””

That answer made Dad stop.

“You know me?””

She looked down.

“I've known about you for years.””

My stomach tightened.

“Then why didn't you tell him?””

Claire looked at me.

And tears filled her eyes.

“Because Nicole threatened me.””

Dad's expression hardened.

“What did she threaten you with?””

Claire opened the door wider.

“Come inside.””

Her house was small.

Quiet.

There were boxes everywhere.

Like she was always ready to leave.

She sat down.

“I was Nicole's older sister.””

“Was?””

Claire laughed sadly.

“We haven't been sisters for a long time.””

She looked at me.

“Your mother was my friend.””

That surprised me.

“She knew you?””

“Yes.””

Claire reached into a drawer.

Pulled out an old envelope.

“Your mother gave me this.””

Dad stared.

“What is it?””

“The original documents.””

The room went silent.

My hands shook.

Claire placed the envelope on the table.

“I was supposed to give these to Marcus if anything happened.””

Dad looked confused.

“Then why didn't you?””

Claire looked away.

“Because Nicole found out.””

She took a breath.

“She came to my house the day after your mother disappeared.””

My chest tightened.

“She knew?””

Claire nodded.

“She knew your mother had trusted me.””

“What did she say?”” Dad asked.

Claire's hands trembled.

“She told me if I helped your mother, she would tell everyone I was involved.””

“Involved in what?””

Claire looked at me.

“Something that wasn't true.””

I understood.

Nicole had always been good at making innocent people look guilty.

Claire continued.

“She said she would make sure nobody believed me.””

Dad looked at the envelope.

“Why keep it all these years?””

Claire smiled sadly.

“Because I was afraid.””

That sentence hurt.

Because I understood it.

Fear changes people.

It makes them quiet.

It makes them hide.

Dad opened the envelope.

Inside was a document.

The real one.

And the signature at the bottom was my mother's.

Not agreeing to leave.

Not giving Nicole control.

It was a request for protection.

My mother had tried to stop Nicole.

The final page had a handwritten note.

I read it.

“Marcus, if I disappear, please don't believe anyone who says I left Maya willingly.””

My knees felt weak.

Dad closed his eyes.

“She knew.””

Claire nodded.

“She knew Nicole would come after her.””

Then Claire pulled out another piece of paper.

“This is why I finally contacted you.””

Dad looked at it.

“What is this?””

Claire whispered:

“The thing Nicole has been hiding all these years.””

It was a bank record.

A transfer.

Money moved the day my mother disappeared.

The account belonged to Nicole.

Dad stared.

“She paid someone.””

Claire nodded.

“Your mother wasn't just pushed out of your life.””

She looked at me.

“She was forced out.””

Before we could say anything else, Dad's phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“No. That's impossible.””

I watched him stand.

“Who?””

He looked at me.

And the words that came next changed everything.

“They found someone.””

My heart raced.

“Who?””

May you like

Dad's voice shook.

“Your mother.””
