Chapter 2: The Call That Changed the Room

The phone continued vibrating against Maya's palm.

*BENNETT MERIDIAN GROUP — OFFICE OF THE CHAIRMAN.*

Maya stared at the screen.

For eleven months, she had kept her personal life and her family's business empire separate. She had ignored calls during dates, silenced notifications during weekends, and instructed her executive assistant to contact her only when something genuinely required her attention.

Apparently, today qualified.

Diane leaned back in her chair.

“Must you answer that now?””

Maya looked at her.

“It's important.””

“I'm sure it can wait. We're having Thanksgiving dinner.””

Maya's thumb hovered over the screen.

Daniel Whitmore had gone completely still.

He was staring at the words on her phone as though they had appeared on a courtroom summons.

“Excuse me,” Maya said.

She stepped away from the table and walked toward the tall windows overlooking the gardens.

“Hello?””

A familiar voice answered.

“Ms. Bennett, I apologize for interrupting your holiday. This is Jonathan Reed.””

Maya's expression softened.

“Jonathan. Is everything all right?””

“I'm afraid we have a situation with the Whitmore account.””

She closed her eyes for half a second.

“What kind of situation?””

“Your grandfather's office asked me to brief you directly now that the transfer is complete. Whitmore Development has missed its second covenant deadline. The lenders are demanding an immediate resolution.””

Maya looked across the dining room.

Daniel Whitmore was still watching her.

“What does that have to do with us?”” she asked.

“Bennett Meridian holds the senior position in the refinancing agreement through our commercial property subsidiary. We also have the option to acquire the distressed debt if the default isn't cured.””

Maya's fingers tightened around the phone.

“Who authorized the original agreement?””

“Your grandfather approved it eighteen months ago. The Whitmores were expanding too quickly, and the project financing was contingent on a major development partnership that never materialized.””

“And the deadline?””

“Monday morning. Unless they produce the required capital or negotiate a restructuring, the lenders can begin enforcement proceedings.””

Maya was quiet.

Then she asked, “Does Daniel Whitmore know we're the controlling party?””

“Not the full extent of it. He knows Bennett Meridian is involved in the financing structure. He may not know that you personally now control the trust that holds our voting interest.””

Maya glanced at Ryan.

He was whispering to his mother, who was gesturing impatiently toward the empty chair.

“Send me the complete file,” Maya said.

“No decisions are to be made without my review.””

“Understood.””

“And Jonathan?””

“Yes, Ms. Bennett?””

“Don't contact the Whitmores directly until I tell you to.””

There was a pause.

“May I ask why?””

Maya looked at Diane.

The older woman was now laughing at something Patricia had said.

“Because I want to understand the people involved before I decide what to do about the business.””

“Of course.””

Maya ended the call.

When she returned to the table, Diane was already speaking.

“Honestly, some people have no sense of timing.””

Maya slipped the phone into her handbag.

“I'm sorry for the interruption.””

“Was that your employer?””

“Yes.””

“What could possibly be so urgent at a publishing company on Thanksgiving?””

“Something involving commercial real estate.””

Daniel put down his fork.

“Commercial real estate?””

Maya nodded.

“Yes.””

“What company was that?””

Maya considered her answer.

“Bennett Meridian.””

The silence that followed was different from the one after Diane's insult.

This time, it was Daniel who looked as though he had forgotten how to breathe.

His wineglass touched the table with a faint click.

“Bennett Meridian Group?”” he asked.

“Yes.””

Diane frowned.

“Daniel, what is it?””

He ignored her.

“Did you say Jonathan Reed?””

Maya nodded again.

Daniel pushed his chair back slightly.

“Jonathan Reed is the chairman's chief financial officer.””

“He is.””

“And Bennett Meridian controls a substantial portion of the financing behind our Boston redevelopment project.””

“That's correct.””

Diane stared at her husband.

“What is she talking about?””

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

He looked at Maya, searching her face for something that would make the situation less extraordinary.

“You work for Bennett Meridian?””

“I oversee several of its investments.””

Diane let out a short, disbelieving laugh.

“Oh, please. She said she worked in publishing.””

“I do.””

“But now you're claiming to work for one of the largest investment groups in the country?””

“I didn't claim anything. You asked a question. I answered it.””

Ryan finally looked directly at Maya.

“What does that mean?””

Maya turned to him.

“It means I work in publishing, and I also have responsibilities within my family's business.””

“Your family's business?”” Diane repeated.

Her voice had changed.

It was no longer dismissive.

It was sharp with suspicion.

“You told us you came from an ordinary family.””

“I told you I wanted a quiet life. I never said my family was ordinary.””

Diane's cheeks flushed.

“You deliberately misled us.””

Maya almost laughed.

“You asked me what I did for work. I answered. You never asked who my grandfather was.””

“That is an absurd distinction.””

“Is it?””

Maya looked around the table.

“Would anyone here have treated me differently if I'd arrived wearing a diamond necklace and announcing my net worth?””

No one answered.

Vanessa lowered her gaze to hide a smile.

Daniel leaned forward.

“Ms. Bennett, if you are connected to the controlling ownership of Bennett Meridian, I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss our refinancing situation with you privately.””

“Of course,” Maya said.

“But not today.””

Daniel nodded, though disappointment tightened his mouth.

Diane stared at her husband.

“Daniel, don't be ridiculous. She's a young woman with an impressive telephone call. That doesn't mean she has authority over a multinational company.””

Maya's phone vibrated again.

She glanced at the message.

It was from Jonathan.

*Transfer documentation confirmed. Voting control effective immediately. Your signature is the final authorization required for the Whitmore restructuring proposal.*

Maya read the message once.

Then she looked at Daniel.

“I believe your company has a deadline on Monday.””

His face went pale.

Ryan's head snapped toward his father.

“What deadline?””

Daniel opened his mouth, then closed it.

Diane spoke first.

“Daniel?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“The redevelopment project has encountered some financing difficulties. Nothing you need to worry about.””

“Financing difficulties?”” Ryan repeated.

“You told me the lenders had approved the extension.””

“They approved an extension subject to certain conditions.””

“Which we haven't met,” Maya said quietly.

Daniel looked at her.

“Not all of them.””

Maya sat down again, not because Diane had asked her to, but because she had decided she wasn't leaving without understanding what was happening.

“Mr. Whitmore, I won't discuss confidential business details in front of guests. But if your company needs help, your financial advisers should contact my office on Monday.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Thank you.””

Diane's expression hardened.

“Absolutely not.””

Everyone turned toward her.

“We are not going to beg for help from someone who has spent the afternoon making us look foolish.””

Maya looked at her steadily.

“Mrs. Whitmore, I didn't make you say anything.””

Diane's mouth tightened.

“You knew who you were. You sat here pretending to be ordinary while allowing us to believe—”

“I never asked you to believe anything about me.””

“You let me insult you!””

“Yes,” Maya replied.

“I did.””

The answer seemed to disturb Diane more than an argument would have.

“Why?””

Maya glanced at Ryan.

“Because I wanted to see what would happen when someone believed I had nothing to offer.””

Ryan's face drained of color.

“Maya, I didn't know.””

“Didn't know what?””

“That your family was—”

“Wealthy?””

He swallowed.

“Yes.””

Maya leaned back.

“Would it have changed what you did at this table?””

Ryan opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That silence told her more than his mother's insults ever could.

Daniel pushed away from the table.

“Diane, perhaps we should all take a breath.””

“No. I want an explanation.””

“You've had several,” Maya said.

She stood again.

“Thank you for dinner. The food was lovely.””

Vanessa rose immediately.

“I'll walk you out.””

Ryan stood too.

“Maya, wait. Please.””

She turned toward him.

“Are you coming with me?””

He glanced at his father, then at his mother.

Diane's eyes narrowed.

“Ryan, sit down.””

For a moment, Maya thought he might finally choose.

Instead, he said, “Can we talk later? Just the two of us?””

Maya's heart gave one small, painful twist.

“Of course.””

She walked toward the foyer with Vanessa.

Halfway there, Vanessa touched her arm.

“For what it's worth, you handled that better than anyone in this family deserves.””

Maya smiled sadly.

“Thank you.””

At the front door, Vanessa handed her a coat.

“Are you really the person who controls Bennett Meridian?””

Maya slipped her arms into the sleeves.

“Apparently, yes.””

Vanessa laughed under her breath.

“I can't wait to watch Aunt Diane try to explain this to everyone.””

Maya looked back toward the dining room.

Through the open doorway, she could see Ryan standing beside his chair, speaking rapidly to his father.

Daniel was no longer listening to him.

He was staring at the table, his hands clasped tightly together.

Maya stepped outside.

Cold air brushed her cheeks.

Her driver was waiting at the end of the driveway, but before she could reach him, Ryan came running down the front steps.

“Maya!””

She stopped.

He reached her, breathing hard.

“Please don't leave like this.””

“How would you prefer I leave?””

“Not angry.””

“I'm not angry, Ryan.””

He looked relieved.

Then she added, “I'm disappointed.””

His relief vanished.

He reached for her hand.

She stepped back.

“Listen to me,” he said.

“I love you. None of this changes that.””

“Doesn't it?””

“No.””

“Then tell me one thing.””

“Anything.””

Maya looked directly into his eyes.

“When your mother asked what I brought to your life, why didn't you tell her?””

Ryan's jaw worked.

“I was trying to keep the peace.””

“With whom?””

He looked toward the mansion.

“My family.””

Maya nodded slowly.

“And what about me?””

He had no answer.

She turned toward the waiting car.

“Maya, please!””

She paused beside the passenger door.

“I need some time, Ryan.””

“How much?””

“I don't know.””

She got into the car.

As the vehicle pulled away, she watched him standing beneath the mansion's towering columns, his hands hanging uselessly at his sides.

For the first time in eleven months, she wondered whether the man she loved had ever truly existed.

Her phone buzzed.

A message from Jonathan appeared.

*There is another issue. Our review of the Whitmore refinancing file has uncovered a transaction that may affect your decision. It involves Ryan Whitmore personally.*

Maya stared at the screen.

May you like

Then another message arrived.

*You should see this before Monday's meeting.*
