Chapter 8: The Truth Behind Sterling Ridge

Three days before the gala, the forensic audit produced its most significant finding.

Maya was in a meeting with Jonathan when Evelyn entered carrying a sealed envelope.

“The auditors have completed their preliminary review of Sterling Ridge,” Evelyn said.

Jonathan closed his laptop.

“What did they find?””

Evelyn placed the envelope on the table.

“The company received four hundred thousand dollars from Whitmore Development. The payment was described as a consulting fee, but the contract doesn't identify any specific services.””

Maya opened the envelope.

“And the $1.2 million transfer?””

“The money was routed through Sterling Ridge and used to settle Ryan's private loan. However, the transfer was initiated using a payment instruction prepared by Diane's office.””

Maya looked up.

“Ryan's signature is still on the authorization.””

“Yes. But the evidence suggests that Diane arranged the payment structure and that Ryan may not have known the final destination of the funds.””

“May not have known?””

“We can't establish his knowledge with certainty. He authorized a transaction without adequately reviewing it. That is a serious failure, even if he didn't understand the entire arrangement.””

Maya leaned back.

“What about the four hundred thousand dollars?””

“There's no evidence that the money went to Ryan. The receiving account belongs to Sterling Ridge, which Diane controls.””

“Where did it go afterward?””

Evelyn opened another document.

“Part of it was transferred to a private investment fund. The remainder was used to cover expenses associated with a property owned by a separate Whitmore family entity.””

Maya stared at the figures.

“Could that be legitimate?””

“Possibly. But the contract doesn't support the payment, and the accountant was instructed to delay recording it in the management summary.””

Maya closed the folder.

“Then the auditors need to determine whether the payment was authorized properly and whether any company funds were misused.””

Jonathan nodded.

“We've also identified an email from Diane to the finance manager. She instructed him to process the payment using Ryan's project authorization.””

Maya looked at him.

“Did Ryan know?””

“We don't know.””

For a moment, Maya said nothing.

She remembered the way Ryan had looked at her in the conference room. His fear had been real. So had his shame.

Perhaps he had been trying to hide his own mistakes while failing to see that someone else was using him.

Perhaps he had known more than he admitted.

Either way, the truth would have to come from evidence, not sympathy.

“Keep the investigation moving,” she said.

“No leaks. No private negotiations.””

Evelyn nodded.

That afternoon, Ryan called Maya.

She considered letting it go to voicemail.

Instead, she answered.

“Hello.””

“I heard the auditors found something about Sterling Ridge.””

“They're still reviewing the records.””

“My mother says you're trying to make her look guilty.””

“I'm not responsible for what your mother says.””

Ryan exhaled.

“I know.””

There was a long silence.

Then he said, “I need to tell you something.””

Maya sat down.

“What?””

“Before Thanksgiving, my mother asked me to authorize a payment related to the redevelopment project. She said it was a temporary bridge arrangement and that the money would be returned within a few days.””

“Did you ask for supporting documents?””

“I did. She told me the finance team had already reviewed them.””

“And you accepted that?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because she's my mother. Because she's been managing the family investments for years. Because I thought she knew what she was doing.””

Maya closed her eyes.

“Ryan, you were authorized to sign those documents. That means you were responsible for reviewing them.””

“I know.””

“Did you benefit from the payment?””

“No. Not directly.””

“Did you know it would be used to settle your private loan?””

His answer took too long.

“I knew the bridge arrangement would protect the investment account. I didn't know the payment would go through Sterling Ridge.””

Maya felt her chest tighten.

“So you knew company money would be used to protect your own investment.””

“I thought the money was part of a legitimate arrangement between the companies.””

“Did you disclose your personal interest?””

“No.””

The admission hung between them.

“Ryan, that's a serious conflict of interest.””

“I know.””

“Why didn't you tell the auditors that?””

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That everyone would assume I had stolen the money. That my father would never trust me again. That you'd think I was exactly the kind of man your family has spent your whole life trying to avoid.””

Maya's eyes stung.

“Instead, you let me find out from the records.””

“I know.””

He sounded exhausted.

“I can't undo what I did. But I'm going to tell the auditors everything. Even the parts that make me look terrible.””

Maya remained silent for several seconds.

“That's the first thing you've said that might actually help you.””

“Does that mean you believe me?””

“No. It means I believe you should tell the truth.””

She ended the call.

That evening, Daniel Whitmore summoned Diane to his study.

Maya learned what happened through Vanessa, who had been visiting the mansion when the argument began.

According to Vanessa, Daniel placed the authenticated email on his desk.

“What is this?”” he asked.

Diane glanced at it.

“An email.””

“Don't play games with me. Why did you instruct the accountant to delay recording the Sterling Ridge payment?””

“I was managing a temporary liquidity issue.””

“Using company money?””

“Using a transaction that was supposed to be reversed.””

“Then why wasn't it documented properly?””

Diane crossed her arms.

“Because your company has been drowning for months, Daniel. Someone had to make decisions.””

“And you decided to route payments through a company you control?””

“I was protecting this family.””

Daniel stared at her.

“From what?””

“From losing everything.””

He shook his head.

“You don't protect a family by hiding transactions.””

Diane's face hardened.

“You're going to let Maya Bennett destroy us?””

“This has nothing to do with Maya.””

“Of course it does. She's the one holding the money. She's the one deciding whether we survive.””

“No,” Daniel said.

“The auditors are deciding whether the records are accurate. The board is deciding whether the company can be restructured. And you and Ryan are responsible for explaining the transactions you authorized.””

Diane took a step backward.

“You would turn against your own wife?””

Daniel's voice broke.

“I don't know who you are anymore.””

She stared at him.

Then she picked up her handbag and walked out.

Vanessa watched her leave.

For the first time in her life, she said, she had seen her uncle stand up to Diane without apologizing afterward.

The next morning, the auditors requested a formal statement from Ryan.

He agreed.

He admitted that he had authorized the bridge payment without fully disclosing his personal interest and that he had failed to verify the ultimate recipient. He also provided emails showing that Diane's office had prepared the transaction instructions.

The audit team could not conclude that Ryan had intentionally stolen money.

But it found that he had violated internal controls and exposed the company to substantial risk.

Ryan accepted responsibility for his actions.

He also agreed to repay any personal benefit that could be established through the review.

When Maya received the final preliminary report, she sat alone in her office for nearly an hour.

The truth was not simple.

Ryan had been reckless. He had concealed information. He had tried to use their engagement as leverage in a financial negotiation.

But Diane had also used his authority to move money through a company she controlled, and she had attempted to hide the transaction from the ordinary reporting process.

The report did not resolve every question.

It did, however, make one thing clear.

Maya's money had never been the only thing at stake.

Power had been.

Control had been.

And the Whitmore family had spent so long protecting its image that its members had forgotten how to protect one another.

At 6:15 p.m., Clara knocked on Maya's office door.

“Your car is ready.””

Maya closed the report.

“Thank you.””

Clara hesitated.

“Can I ask you something?””

“Of course.””

“Are you going to the gala because you want to help the foundation, or because you want Diane to see you?””

Maya considered the question.

“Both, perhaps.””

Clara smiled.

“Fair enough.””

Maya stood and collected her coat.

She wasn't going to the gala to humiliate Diane.

She wasn't going to rescue Ryan.

May you like

She was going because she had spent too much of her life shrinking herself to make other people comfortable.

That was about to change.
