Chapter 9: The Last Deal Ryan Ever Made

“Absolutely not.””

My father slammed his hand against the conference table.

“I am not letting you go anywhere near that man.””

I stared at Vanessa's photograph.

Her face was pale. Her eyes were swollen.

She looked terrified.

“Dad, she's his sister.””

“She is also a potential witness. The police will handle this.””

“What if he hurts her?””

Detective Miller stepped forward.

“We have a specialist team ready to coordinate a response. We will not send you into an uncontrolled situation.””

I handed him my phone.

“Then tell me what we can do.””

He studied the message.

“Ryan wants you to come alone. That suggests he believes he can still manipulate you.””

I looked at the photograph again.

“He thinks I still care about him.””

My father shook his head.

“You don't have to prove anything to him.””

“I'm not trying to prove anything. I want Vanessa safe.””

Marcus opened his laptop.

“We can trace the photograph's location using background details, but it may take time.””

“Do it.””

The next forty minutes felt endless.

Investigators examined the photograph, comparing the visible warehouse markings with property records.

Eventually, they identified the building.

An abandoned industrial complex near the river, formerly used by a shipping company.

Detective Miller looked at the map.

“We'll establish a perimeter.””

My father immediately said, “Maya stays here.””

I looked at him.

“Dad—”

“No.””

His voice softened.

“I almost lost my daughter to this man. I'm not going to risk that again.””

I reached for his hand.

“I know.””

For the first time, I understood that my father wasn't simply trying to protect his company.

He was afraid of losing me.

I squeezed his hand.

“I'll follow the police instructions. I promise.””

The operation began shortly after midnight.

I remained inside an unmarked vehicle with two officers while the tactical team approached the warehouse.

Detective Miller stood beside me.

“If Ryan contacts you, answer only when instructed. Don't make promises. Don't move unless we tell you.””

I nodded.

My phone rang.

Ryan.

Detective Miller gestured for me to answer.

“Hello?””

“Maya.””

His voice sounded calm.

Almost affectionate.

“Where are you?””

“Somewhere safe.””

He laughed.

“You always did know how to avoid answering questions.””

“What do you want?””

“Come to the warehouse.””

“Why?””

“Because I want to talk.””

“You have a strange way of showing it.””

He sighed.

“Vanessa is fine.””

I heard movement in the background.

Then a muffled voice.

“Maya?””

Vanessa.

“I'm here,” I said.

Ryan interrupted.

“Don't waste time. Bring the documents your father has.””

“What documents?””

“The original transfer records. The complete audit report. Everything.””

“Why?””

“Because I need to make sure nobody misunderstands what happened.””

I almost laughed.

“Misunderstands?””

“You know what I mean.””

“No, Ryan. I really don't.””

His voice hardened.

“Your father has destroyed my life.””

I looked at Detective Miller.

He signaled for me to continue.

“Your father?””

“Alexander Bennett. He has spent his entire life pretending to be an honest businessman. Now he's going to blame me for everything.””

“Did you steal eighteen million dollars?””

Silence.

Then Ryan said, “You have no idea what your father has done.””

“Then explain it.””

He laughed bitterly.

“Your father built an empire by taking opportunities away from other people. He controls companies, investments, property, everything. And he expected me to stand outside that world forever.””

“You could have built your own.””

“I tried.””

“No, Ryan. You tried to steal someone else's.””

His voice changed.

“You really think you're better than me?””

“No. I think I trusted you.””

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he said something that made my chest tighten.

“I did love you, Maya.””

I closed my eyes.

“Did you?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you use me?””

“Because I wanted a future with you.””

“A future that required stealing from my father?””

“I was going to give it back.””

“When?””

He didn't answer.

I swallowed.

“Ryan, you didn't want a future with me. You wanted a future with my money.””

He became furious.

“That's not true!””

“Then tell me why you asked Daniel about my voting rights before we even met.””

Silence.

I knew I had hit something.

Finally, he whispered, “Who told you that?””

“Does it matter?””

“You don't understand the situation.””

“Then explain it.””

He laughed.

“You think you can walk away from this? Your father is going to lose everything. Olivia is going to prison.

Daniel is going to disappear. And you're going to discover that being Alexander Bennett's daughter doesn't make you untouchable.””

Detective Miller raised his hand.

The tactical team had reached the warehouse.

I continued talking.

“Where's Vanessa?””

“Inside.””

“Let her go.””

“Bring the documents.””

“I don't have them.””

His breathing became louder.

“Don't lie to me.””

“I'm not.””

He suddenly shouted, “You have five minutes!””

The call ended.

Detective Miller turned toward his radio.

“Move in.””

The next few minutes were chaos.

Officers entered through the main doors while another team secured the rear exits.

A loud crash echoed through the building.

Then shouting.

Then silence.

I remained inside the vehicle.

My hands were shaking.

A few minutes later, Detective Miller returned.

“We have Vanessa.””

I exhaled.

“Is she okay?””

“She has some minor injuries, but she's conscious.””

“And Ryan?””

The detective looked at me.

“He escaped through a service exit.””

My stomach dropped.

“How?””

“We're searching the surrounding area.””

He opened the vehicle door.

“Stay here.””

I saw Vanessa being helped into an ambulance.

She looked toward me.

“Maya!””

I ran to her.

She grabbed my hand.

“I'm sorry.””

I shook my head.

“Don't talk. You're safe.””

Vanessa began crying.

“He told me he was going to leave the country. He said I had to help him.””

“What did he want?””

“The documents. He thought Dad had given you copies.””

I looked at Detective Miller.

“Did you find anything inside?””

He nodded.

“A laptop, several passports, and cash. We also recovered a set of financial records.””

“Anything about the eighteen million?””

“Yes.””

He handed me a photograph of a printed ledger.

The account balance showed that only a small portion of the money remained.

Most of it had already been transferred through several companies.

Then I noticed something.

A final entry.

*Beneficiary: Bennett Family Trust.*

I frowned.

“Why is our trust listed?””

Marcus, who had arrived with my father, examined the page.

“That's impossible.””

He looked closer.

Then his expression changed.

“Wait.””

“What?””

“The account wasn't receiving money.””

He pointed at the transaction code.

“It was being used as a destination reference to disguise the transfers.””

My father stared at the document.

“They wanted the money to appear as though it had been moved into our own trust.””

Marcus nodded.

“Which would make the financial trail appear legitimate if anyone examined it superficially.””

I looked at the ledger.

“Then they weren't just stealing eighteen million.””

My father answered quietly.

“They were building a case to make it look as though I had stolen it myself.””

A detective approached.

“We've identified the second phone recovered from the warehouse. It contains a message from Ryan to an unknown contact.””

“Who?”” I asked.

“We're working on the identity.””

“What does the message say?””

The detective looked at his notes.

“Ryan wrote: 'The Bennett problem is bigger than expected. If I can't get out, activate the final account.''”

Marcus frowned.

“What final account?””

The detective shook his head.

“We don't know yet.””

Then my phone rang.

An unfamiliar number.

I answered.

A man's voice came through.

“Maya Bennett?””

“Who is this?””

“My name is Daniel Cross.””

My father stepped closer.

I put the call on speaker.

Daniel sounded exhausted.

“I need to speak with your father.””

My father took the phone.

“You have a lot of explaining to do.””

Daniel laughed weakly.

“I'm afraid explaining won't be enough.””

“What do you want?””

“I have the original records. Every transfer. Every forged authorization. Every agreement Ryan made.””

“Where are you?””

“I'm willing to surrender.””

My father looked at Detective Miller.

Daniel continued.

“But there's one condition.””

“What condition?”” my father asked.

“I need protection from the person who actually controlled the entire operation.””

I frowned.

“Ryan controlled it.””

Daniel went quiet.

Then he said:

“No, Maya.””

A long pause followed.

“Ryan was only the middleman.””

My father's expression changed.

May you like

Daniel whispered the final sentence.

“The person who designed the entire scheme was someone your family has trusted for twenty years.””
