Chapter 4: The Invitation That Exposed Everything
I didn't answer immediately.
Ryan stood across from his desk, watching me.
“Your father is investigating my company,” he repeated.
“I need to know what he's planning.””
I tilted my head.
“Why would my father investigate you?””
Ryan laughed nervously.
“That's what I'm trying to understand.””
“Maybe you should ask him.””
“I have.””
“And?””
“He refuses to speak to me.””
I looked at him.
“Perhaps he has a reason.””
Ryan's jaw tightened.
“Maya, I know you're angry about Thanksgiving, but this is bigger than that.””
I picked up my handbag.
“Then perhaps you should handle it without me.””
He moved toward the door.
“Wait.””
I stopped.
“I need you to do something.””
“What?””
“Invite your father to dinner.””
I stared at him.
“You want to meet my father?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I want to clear up the misunderstanding.””
I almost laughed.
“What misunderstanding?””
Ryan looked directly at me.
“The one that could ruin everything.””
I left without answering.
Back at Bennett Holdings, Marcus was waiting in my father's office.
“Did he say anything useful?””
I told them about the frozen transfer, the eighteen million dollars, and Ryan's request to meet my father.
Marcus wrote everything down.
My father remained silent.
Then he asked, “Did Ryan mention Daniel?””
“Yes. He asked whether Daniel had left anything behind.””
Marcus exchanged a look with my father.
“What?”” I asked.
Marcus opened his laptop.
“Daniel's company-issued phone was recovered from his office this morning. Our forensic team found a deleted message thread.””
He turned the screen toward me.
The messages were between Daniel and Ryan.
The earliest dated message was from ten months ago.
Ryan had written:
I met her. She seems completely unaware of the family business.
Daniel replied:
Good. Keep it that way.
Another message appeared two weeks later.
Her father still hasn't announced the succession plan. I need to know whether Maya will receive voting rights.
I looked at my father.
“Voting rights?””
My father nodded slowly.
“Your shares are held through a family trust. You were scheduled to receive additional voting authority when you turned twenty-five.””
I felt a chill.
“Next month.””
“Yes.””
Marcus continued scrolling.
The next message was dated seven months earlier.
Ryan:
She trusts me. I think I can get access to the private shareholder dinner.
Daniel:
Make sure she believes the relationship is serious. We need her there before the board meeting.
I sat down.
“Were they planning to use me?””
My father didn't answer immediately.
Marcus did.
“It appears they wanted you to introduce Ryan into the family circle and potentially influence the succession process.””
I looked at the screen.
Then I noticed something.
There was another name in the message thread.
Olivia Mercer.
Ryan's former girlfriend.
I pointed at it.
“Why is Olivia involved?””
Marcus opened the attached contact profile.
“Olivia Mercer works for Mercer Capital Partners.””
I recognized the company.
They were one of the private investment groups attempting to purchase a controlling interest in several distressed financial assets.
“Are they connected to Ryan?””
Marcus nodded.
“Whitmore Advisory Group received payments from a company associated with Mercer Capital.””
My father leaned forward.
“Get me everything on Olivia Mercer.””
Marcus made a note.
I stood.
“I want to know why she was mentioned.””
My father looked at me.
“Let us handle the investigation.””
“I can read an email, Dad.””
He gave me a tired smile.
“I know you can. But you don't need to put yourself in the middle of this.””
I looked at the documents.
“I'm already in the middle of it.””
That afternoon, I received a message from Vanessa.
*Vanessa:* Maya, Mom wants to apologize. Can you come over tomorrow? Just the three of us.
I stared at the screen.
Then another message arrived.
*Vanessa:* She really didn't mean what she said.
I almost deleted it.
But something occurred to me.
Ryan had been asking to meet my father.
His mother was suddenly apologizing.
His sister was reaching out.
They didn't know what I knew.
And I wanted to find out how much they were willing to reveal.
I replied.
*Me:* Tomorrow evening works.
Vanessa responded immediately.
*Vanessa:* Wonderful! Mom will be so happy.
I showed my father.
He frowned.
“You're going back there?””
“I'm curious.””
“Curiosity can be expensive.””
“I know.””
Marcus suggested that I avoid discussing the investigation and let him know if anyone threatened me or attempted to pressure me.
The next evening, I returned to the Whitmore home.
This time, Diane opened the door herself.
She wore a cream-colored dress and a diamond necklace.
“Maya! Darling!””
She hugged me before I could react.
I stood awkwardly.
“Hello, Diane.””
“Come inside. I've made your favorite.””
I had never told her what my favorite meal was.
Apparently, Ryan had.
The dining room had been rearranged.
There were only three place settings.
Vanessa was sitting near the fireplace, scrolling through her phone.
“Hey, Maya.””
“Hi.””
Diane guided me to a chair.
“Please sit. We have so much to discuss.””
I noticed a folder beside her plate.
“What is that?””
“Oh, nothing important.””
She moved it underneath a magazine.
I sat down.
Diane poured sparkling water.
“I've been thinking about our conversation on Thanksgiving.””
I waited.
“I may have been too direct.””
“Too direct?””
She gave a strained laugh.
“Well, perhaps I should have chosen my words more carefully.””
I took a sip.
“Perhaps.””
Vanessa leaned forward.
“Mom has been feeling terrible.””
I looked at her.
“Has she?””
“Yes. She doesn't want Ryan to lose someone wonderful.””
Diane smiled.
“Exactly.””
I placed my glass down.
“That's very kind.””
Diane glanced toward the folder.
“Ryan mentioned your father has been successful in business.””
“He has.””
“Very successful, apparently.””
“Yes.””
“And you work with him?””
“Sometimes.””
Vanessa leaned forward.
“So, what does that mean? Do you own part of Bennett Holdings?””
I looked at her.
“Why are you asking?””
“I'm just curious.””
Diane laughed.
“Vanessa has always been interested in business.””
I nodded.
“That's nice.””
The conversation continued, but every question circled back to my family's finances.
How many properties did we own?
Did my father have plans to retire?
Was I involved in the board?
Would I inherit his position?
I answered carefully.
Then Diane finally opened the folder.
“Maya, I have something I would like you to consider.””
She slid a document toward me.
It was a proposal for a private investment partnership.
The heading read:
*WHITMORE FAMILY STRATEGIC DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE.*
I scanned the first page.
There was a request for an introductory investment commitment of five million dollars.
I looked up.
“What is this?””
Diane clasped her hands.
“Ryan has some wonderful opportunities ahead of him. We believe this could be the beginning of something very special for both families.””
I turned another page.
The document listed several proposed investors.
One name caught my eye.
Mercer Capital Partners.
I looked at Diane.
“Why is Olivia Mercer's company listed here?””
Vanessa shifted in her chair.
Diane's smile disappeared for half a second.
“Olivia is a friend of the family.””
“Interesting.””
“She's very accomplished.””
“So I've heard.””
Diane leaned forward.
“Maya, I think there's a real opportunity here. With your family's resources and Ryan's expertise, everyone could benefit.””
I looked at the five-million-dollar request.
Then I looked at the woman who had told me I wasn't suitable for her son.
“Is this why you invited me?””
Diane's cheeks reddened.
“Don't be ridiculous.””
“Then why is there a five-million-dollar investment proposal on the table?””
Vanessa interrupted.
“It's not just about money. It's about building something together.””
I stood.
“Thank you for dinner.””
Diane reached for my wrist.
“Wait. You haven't even considered it.””
I gently pulled away.
“I've considered enough.””
Her expression hardened.
“You know, Maya, Ryan has been very patient with you.””
I looked at her.
“Patient?””
“He could have chosen someone much more established.””
I laughed once.
“Then perhaps he should have.””
I walked toward the entrance.
Vanessa followed me.
“Maya, don't tell Ryan I showed you that document.””
I stopped.
“Why?””
She looked frightened.
“Because he doesn't know Mom planned to ask you tonight.””
I studied her face.
“Then who does know?””
Vanessa swallowed.
And before she could answer, my phone buzzed.
A message from Marcus.
*URGENT: We found the original authorization for the $18 million transfer. It was approved using Alexander Bennett's credentials.*
I stared at the screen.
My father had not approved that transfer.
May you like
Someone had forged his authorization.
And the person who had access to his private office was someone who had been in our family for years.
