Chapter 5: The Signature That Could Destroy Us

I called Marcus before I even reached my car.

“Tell me exactly what you found.””

His voice was tense.

“The original authorization was submitted through the internal finance system. It carries your father's digital signature.””

“That's impossible.””

“We know. Your father was in New York on the date the transfer was approved.””

“Who had access?””

“That's what we're investigating.””

I looked through the windshield at the Whitmore house.

Vanessa was still standing near the front door.

“Marcus, is it possible someone used his credentials remotely?””

“Yes. But there are additional security records we need to examine.””

“Send everything to Dad.””

“He already has it.””

I ended the call.

My phone rang again.

Ryan.

I considered ignoring him.

Then I answered.

“Hello?””

“Where are you?””

“Leaving your mother's house.””

“Why didn't you tell me you were going?””

“Your sister invited me.””

He sighed.

“Maya, my mother told me what happened.””

“What happened?””

“She said you were rude to her.””

I laughed.

“That's interesting.””

“She was trying to make peace.””

“She offered me a five-million-dollar investment proposal.””

Silence.

Then Ryan said, “What?””

“Apparently, your family has some business opportunities.””

He lowered his voice.

“Did she show you the proposal?””

“Yes.””

“Did you sign anything?””

“No.””

“Good.””

I stopped walking.

“Why is that good?””

He hesitated.

“Because the paperwork isn't finalized.””

“Then why did she give it to me?””

“Maya, listen. Don't get involved in my family's business.””

I looked toward the house.

“Your mother seems to think I'm involved.””

“She's not supposed to be handling that.””

“Who is?””

Ryan didn't answer.

I ended the call.

Something about his reaction bothered me.

Not because he had been surprised.

Because he sounded frightened.

The following morning, I arrived at Bennett Holdings earlier than usual.

My father was already in the conference room with Marcus and two members of the forensic accounting team.

A large screen displayed a transaction timeline.

Marcus pointed to the first entry.

“The original eighteen-million-dollar authorization was submitted using Mr. Bennett's digital credentials. However, the login originated from a device registered to Daniel Cross.””

My father frowned.

“Daniel had access to the finance system, but he couldn't authorize transfers above ten million without my approval.””

“Correct,” Marcus replied.

“Which means the authorization was either forged or obtained through an improperly delegated account.””

I looked at the timeline.

“What about the other transfers?””

“Smaller amounts were approved using legitimate vendor procedures,” Marcus explained.

“But the eighteen-million-dollar transaction was different.””

He clicked another document.

“This is the account destination.””

The receiving company was called Northstar Strategic Consulting.

I had never heard of it.

“Who owns it?””

Marcus brought up the corporate registration.

A name appeared.

Richard Whitmore.

Ryan's father.

I looked at my father.

“Diane's husband?””

My father nodded slowly.

Marcus continued.

“Northstar Strategic Consulting has no meaningful business operations. Its registered address is a private mailbox in Delaware. However, it received several payments from companies associated with Daniel Cross.””

I sat down.

“So Richard was involved?””

“We don't know how deeply,” Marcus said.

“But the connection is significant.””

My father leaned back.

“Get the authorities involved. Preserve every record. I want a complete account trail.””

Marcus nodded.

Then he hesitated.

“There is one more issue.””

My father looked at him.

“What now?””

“The board meeting scheduled for Monday has been changed. A special resolution has been submitted proposing an emergency review of the company's leadership structure.””

I frowned.

“Who requested it?””

Marcus turned his laptop.

“Daniel Cross's proxy group.””

My father stared at the screen.

“Daniel resigned yesterday. How can he still submit a resolution?””

“He transferred his voting interests to a private investment vehicle last month.””

“Without notifying the board?””

“Apparently.””

I leaned forward.

“Who controls the vehicle?””

Marcus clicked another link.

The answer appeared.

Mercer Capital Partners.

I felt my stomach tighten.

Olivia.

The former girlfriend.

The woman whose name had appeared in Ryan's messages.

My father rubbed his forehead.

“They're trying to force a leadership vote.””

“Can they do that?””

“Not without meeting several legal requirements,” Marcus said.

“But they can create enough disruption to pressure our investors.””

I looked at the documents.

“Why would Olivia want to control Bennett Holdings?””

Marcus answered carefully.

“Mercer Capital has been acquiring distressed assets and companies with governance disputes. If they can gain control of a subsidiary during the current investigation, they could potentially acquire it at a discounted valuation.””

My father nodded.

“And if the eighteen million dollars was intended to finance that acquisition, we need to know who authorized the arrangement.””

I stared at the screen.

Ryan.

Daniel.

Richard.

Olivia.

It was no longer a family misunderstanding.

It was a coordinated business operation.

At 11:20 a.m., Marcus received an email.

He read it silently.

Then he looked at my father.

“Olivia Mercer has requested a private meeting.””

My father frowned.

“Why?””

“She says she has information about the Whitmore family.””

I looked at him.

“Meet her.””

My father considered it.

“Perhaps.””

“I want to be there.””

“No.””

“Dad.””

“Maya, this is not a social conversation.””

“I'm not asking to bring coffee. I'm asking to hear what the woman who was communicating with my boyfriend has to say.””

My father studied me.

Then he nodded.

“Fine. But Marcus will handle the meeting.””

Olivia arrived at 2:00 p.m.

She was tall, elegant, and dressed in a tailored black suit. Her hair was pulled into a neat bun, and she carried a leather portfolio.

When she entered the conference room, her eyes immediately found me.

“Maya Bennett.””

“Olivia Mercer.””

She smiled faintly.

“I wasn't expecting you to be here.””

“Neither was I expecting to meet you under these circumstances.””

Olivia placed her portfolio on the table.

“That's fair.””

My father gestured toward a chair.

“Please sit.””

She did.

Marcus began.

“You requested this meeting because you have information regarding Richard Whitmore, Ryan Whitmore, and Daniel Cross.””

Olivia nodded.

“Yes.””

“What kind of information?””

She opened her portfolio.

“Ryan approached me approximately fourteen months ago. He wanted to discuss a potential acquisition involving one of Bennett Holdings' subsidiaries.””

I looked at her.

“Fourteen months?””

“Yes.””

“Before we met?””

She met my eyes.

“Yes.””

My throat tightened.

Olivia continued.

“Initially, I assumed he was simply looking for an investment partner. But then he introduced me to Daniel Cross.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“What did they propose?””

“A plan to acquire a controlling interest in Bennett Commercial Capital through a combination of private financing, shareholder pressure, and an internal leadership dispute.””

My father remained expressionless.

“Why are you telling us this now?””

Olivia looked down at her hands.

“Because I discovered they were using my company without my full authorization.””

Marcus opened his notebook.

“Explain.””

“Ryan created several financial projections using Mercer Capital's name. He represented to outside investors that we had committed funds. We had not.””

I looked at her.

“Were you aware he was dating me?””

Olivia hesitated.

“Yes.””

“Did you know why?””

She took a breath.

“Not initially. But after I saw an email from Daniel, I realized the relationship was part of their strategy.””

I felt my hands tighten.

“What email?””

Olivia removed a printed page from her portfolio.

She slid it across the table.

I recognized Ryan's writing.

Once Maya is emotionally committed, she'll help us gain access to Alexander. She trusts me completely.

I read it once.

Then again.

Olivia spoke quietly.

“I should have contacted you sooner.””

I looked at her.

“Why didn't you?””

“Because I was afraid my own company would be implicated. I spent the last two months trying to establish exactly what Ryan had done.””

Marcus examined the document.

“Do you have the original?””

“Yes. The entire email chain, along with financial records.””

My father leaned forward.

“Why did you finally decide to cooperate?””

Olivia looked at me.

“Because Ryan contacted me yesterday.””

“What did he say?”” I asked.

“He wanted me to confirm that Mercer Capital was still willing to support the acquisition.””

“And?””

“I told him no.””

She paused.

“Then he threatened to release documents suggesting I had orchestrated the entire operation.””

Marcus exchanged a look with my father.

Olivia continued.

“He said he had enough evidence to make it appear that I was the mastermind.””

I looked at the documents.

“So he's preparing to blame you.””

“Yes.””

My father folded his hands.

“Then we need to protect the evidence and make sure the authorities receive everything.””

Olivia nodded.

Marcus began collecting the papers.

But before the meeting ended, Olivia reached into her portfolio again.

“There is something else.””

She placed a photograph on the table.

It showed Ryan standing outside a restaurant with Daniel Cross.

A third person stood beside them.

I recognized him immediately.

Richard Whitmore.

But the date printed beneath the photograph made my blood run cold.

It had been taken three days before Ryan first approached me at the coffee shop.

I looked at Olivia.

“Where did you get this?””

“From a private investigator I hired.””

“Why was he investigating them?””

“Because I suspected they were moving money through a company connected to my investors.””

My father picked up the photograph.

“Who took it?””

Olivia hesitated.

Then she answered.

“Someone who was following Richard Whitmore.””

I stared at the picture.

Ryan wasn't simply a man who had become involved in a financial scheme after meeting me.

He had been meeting with the people behind it before our relationship even began.

My phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

I opened it.

There was a photograph of my father entering his office that morning.

Beneath it was one sentence.

*Tell your father to stop investigating, or the next picture won't be of him walking into work.*

I stood so quickly that my chair fell backward.

My father looked at me.

“What happened?””

I handed him the phone.

He read the message.

His expression changed.

Marcus immediately reached for his own phone.

Olivia whispered, “They're getting desperate.””

My father looked at me.

Then he said something I would never forget.

“Maya, this is no longer about recovering eighteen million dollars.””

He placed my phone on the table.

“Someone is willing to hurt our family to keep the truth buried.””

And before anyone could respond, Marcus's phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

Then slowly lowered it.

“Alexander,” he said, “the police are at Richard Whitmore's house.””

My father stood.

“What happened?””

Marcus swallowed.

“Richard has disappeared.””

May you like

A pause.

“And they found blood in his study.””
