Chapter 9: The Night Everyone Lied

I enlarged the photograph.

The image was grainy, but there was no mistaking Danielle's face. She stood beside Ethan near the workbench, one hand holding a black phone.

The photograph appeared to have been taken from inside the garage, near the storage shelves.

Behind them, Jordan's blue mathematics notebook rested on a box.

It was the same notebook my son had shown me that morning.

I turned toward Danielle.

“Why were you holding Ethan's phone?””

She stared at the screen.

“I don't know when that picture was taken.””

“That's not an answer.””

“I wasn't supposed to meet him.””

“Then why were you there?””

She shook her head.

“Marcus, please.””

I stepped away from her.

“I'm done asking questions that you refuse to answer.””

I called the attorney again and explained the new development. He advised me to preserve the photograph and the message exactly as received, avoid confronting Ethan directly, and contact the appropriate authorities because the situation involved threats, possible coercion, and potentially manipulated evidence concerning minors.

I followed his advice.

I didn't threaten Ethan.

I didn't send him an angry message.

I didn't try to force a confession.

I saved the original message and photographed the screen with a second device so the evidence could be documented without altering the original.

Then I contacted the local police department's non-emergency line and explained that I needed guidance about a teenager who appeared to be threatening another minor and who might have been involved in manipulating evidence.

The officer who took my call was calm and practical.

She asked whether anyone was in immediate danger.

I told her I didn't believe so, but I was concerned about the threats and the possibility that someone had been entering my home without permission.

She arranged for an officer to come by and take an initial report.

While we waited, Danielle sat at the kitchen table with her head in her hands.

Jordan remained upstairs.

I checked on him twice, making sure he had food and water and knew he could call me at any time.

At four thirty, a police officer arrived.

Her name was Officer Reynolds.

She listened while I explained the situation, then asked to see the original messages and the recovered security footage.

I showed her everything I had preserved.

She took notes.

“Have you spoken directly with Ethan about these messages?”” she asked.

“No.””

“Good. Don't contact him for now. We may need to establish where the messages originated and whether the devices have been altered.””

She turned toward Danielle.

“Mrs. Brooks, I need to ask you some questions about the photograph.””

Danielle nodded.

“Do you know when it was taken?””

“No.””

“Do you recognize the phone?””

“Yes.””

“Whose is it?””

“Ethan's, I believe.””

“Why were you holding it?””

Danielle looked at me.

I said nothing.

She turned back to the officer.

“Kiara told me Ethan had been threatening her. I wanted to see what was on the phone.””

“Did he give it to you?””

“No.””

“How did you obtain it?””

Danielle's voice dropped.

“Kiara took it from him.””

Officer Reynolds paused.

“Your daughter took a phone belonging to a person she says was threatening her?””

“She wanted to stop him from contacting her.””

“Did you advise her to turn the phone over to the police?””

“No.””

“Why not?””

Danielle looked down.

“I thought I could handle it.””

The officer made another note.

“Did you access the device?””

“No.””

“Did you remove anything from it?””

“I took the phone from Kiara. I wanted to keep it safe.””

“Where is it now?””

Danielle shook her head.

“I don't know.””

That was the first answer she had given that genuinely surprised me.

“You don't know where the phone is?”” I asked.

She looked at me.

“Kiara said she'd given it back.””

“When?””

“Yesterday.””

I felt a knot form in my stomach.

Yesterday was the day Danielle had first demanded that I send Jordan away.

Officer Reynolds continued.

“Did you know that Mr. Brooks's security footage had been deleted?””

“No.””

“Did you attempt to access the security system?””

“No.””

“Does anyone else have access to your husband's account?””

Danielle hesitated.

“Kiara knows the password to the upstairs computer.””

The officer wrote that down.

“Thank you. I may need to speak with your daughter, with appropriate arrangements made for her age and circumstances. For now, please don't delete messages, reset devices, or ask anyone to alter anything. If you receive further threats, preserve them and contact us.””

After the officer left, I stood in the kitchen staring at the table.

Danielle approached me.

“Marcus, I never meant for any of this to happen.””

I looked at her.

“You let me believe my son was dangerous.””

“I was trying to protect Kiara.””

“You could have protected her without accusing him.””

“I know.””

“You could have told me that Ethan was threatening her.””

“I know.””

“You could have asked me to help.””

Her eyes filled.

“I was ashamed.””

“Of what?””

She sat down.

“Of how much I'd allowed things to get out of control.””

For the first time, she spoke without trying to defend herself.

She told me that she'd initially believed Ethan was a harmless boyfriend. When Kiara began receiving threatening messages, Danielle tried to manage the situation privately because she feared that a formal complaint would damage her daughter's reputation at school.

Then Kiara told her that Jordan had seen Ethan's phone.

Danielle panicked.

She imagined that Jordan would tell me, that I would demand answers, and that the truth would expose how poorly she had handled the situation.

Instead of admitting her mistakes, she encouraged Kiara to describe Jordan as a source of discomfort.

She convinced herself that sending him away temporarily would give them time to deal with
