Chapter 8: The Agreement That Should Never Have Existed
I stared at the email.
For several seconds, I couldn't bring myself to touch it.
The subject line alone was enough to make my stomach turn.
What We Agreed to Do About Jordan.
Danielle sat across from me, her eyes red and swollen.
“I didn't want you to see that.””
“Clearly.””
“Marcus, please read the whole thing before you decide what it means.””
I unfolded the paper.
The email had been sent twelve days earlier.
Kiara's message was short.
Mom, I did what we discussed. I told you he was making me uncomfortable. I showed you the screenshot. I thought you'd talk to Marcus and make him understand.
Below it, Danielle had replied:
I did. He won't listen. We need to make him understand that this arrangement isn't working.
Kiara's response came two minutes later.
What if Jordan tells him about the garage?
Danielle's reply was the final message on the page.
He won't if he wants to stay in the house.
I read the exchange again.
Then I looked up.
“What arrangement?””
Danielle pressed her hands together.
“I was trying to get Marcus to agree to send Jordan to stay with his grandparents for a while.””
“For how long?””
“Until things settled down.””
“You wanted to send my fifteen-year-old son away because Kiara was being threatened by her boyfriend?””
“I thought separating them would give us time to deal with everything.””
“Then why did you need a false accusation?””
Her eyes filled with tears again.
“I didn't think it was false at first.””
“But you kept pushing it after Jordan denied it. You demanded that I throw him out. You showed me a screenshot that you hadn't verified.””
She looked down.
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“Of losing control of the situation.””
I laughed, but there was no humor in it.
“You lost control the moment you decided the solution was to make my son the villain.””
She flinched.
I continued reading the email.
A second page had been printed with it. This one contained a message sent two days later.
Mom, I don't want to keep doing this. Jordan hasn't done anything.
Danielle had replied:
Then stop giving him opportunities to interfere. We have to protect you first.
I lowered the paper.
“Danielle, did you tell Kiara to accuse Jordan of something he hadn't done?””
“No.””
“Did you encourage her to use the screenshot?””
“I told her to show me what she had.””
“That isn't what I asked.””
She stared at her hands.
“I told her that if she felt uncomfortable, she should say so.””
“And when she told you Jordan hadn't actually done anything?””
Danielle didn't answer.
The silence told me enough.
I stood and walked to the window.
Outside, a neighbor was carrying groceries from his car. He waved when he saw me, unaware that my marriage was collapsing in the room behind me.
I raised a hand automatically, then turned away.
“Did you know the screenshot had been manipulated?””
“No.””
“Did you ask Kiara to create it?””
“No.””
“Did you know she had placed her phone outside her bedroom?””
“No.””
“Then what exactly did you agree to do?””
Danielle began crying again.
“I agreed to talk to you about sending Jordan away temporarily. Kiara thought if he left, Ethan would stop threatening her because there would be no one around to ask questions about the garage.””
I turned slowly.
“That makes no sense.””
“I know.””
“Why would Ethan care whether Jordan lived here?””
“Because Jordan saw his phone.””
“And?””
“Because the phone contained messages about what Ethan had been doing.””
“What had he been doing?””
Danielle shook her head.
“I don't know everything.””
I walked back to the desk.
“Then we need to find out.””
She grabbed my wrist.
“Please don't call the police.””
I looked down at her hand.
Then I looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because Kiara is seventeen. She's made mistakes, but she's still a child.””
“So is Jordan.””
“I know.””
“Then why did you protect your daughter by putting mine—my son—at risk?””
She released my wrist.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then I said, “I'm contacting someone who can help us handle this properly. We need to preserve the evidence, establish what happened, and make sure both teenagers are safe.””
Danielle shook her head.
“Marcus, please. We can fix this ourselves.””
“No.””
Her face crumpled.
“You're going to destroy our family.””
I stared at her.
“You were willing to destroy my son's place in it.””
She had no answer.
I called a family attorney I had consulted years earlier during a property dispute. I explained that there were conflicting allegations involving two teenagers, possible fabricated digital evidence, and a threat made by an older teenager.
The attorney advised me to preserve all original files, avoid altering or circulating screenshots, and arrange a professional review of the devices and messages. If there was evidence of coercion or threats, we should contact the appropriate authorities rather than attempt to confront the suspected person ourselves.
I thanked him and ended the call.
Then I looked at Danielle.
“We're not going to settle this by deciding which child we prefer. We're going to establish what happened.””
She nodded weakly.
I went upstairs to check on Jordan.
He was sitting on his bed with his notebook open on his knees.
“Are you okay?”” I asked.
He shrugged.
“Not really.””
I sat beside him.
“I read the email.””
His face tightened.
“Was it bad?””
“It was bad.””
He stared at the notebook.
“I knew they were planning something. I just didn't know how far they'd go.””
“Why didn't you tell me about the email?””
“I didn't have it. I only saw it when Kiara left her laptop open.””
“When?””
“Last week. I was going downstairs to get water. Her laptop was on the kitchen island, and a notification appeared.””
“Did you read the whole thing?””
“No. Just enough to understand that she and Danielle were talking about me.””
I nodded.
“Thank you for telling me.””
He looked at me.
“Are you going to divorce Danielle?””
I took a breath.
“I don't know what will happen to our marriage. But I do know that things cannot continue the way they have been.””
He rubbed his eyes.
“I don't want you to be alone.””
The words nearly undid me.
“Jordan, you don't have to worry about me.””
“But—”
“No. You have spent too much time worrying about what the adults in this house might do. Let me take responsibility for my own life.””
He nodded slowly.
Then he said, “Can I tell you something without you getting angry?””
“Of course.””
“I think Kiara was trying to protect someone.””
“Ethan?””
“Maybe. But I think she was also protecting Mom.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
Jordan opened his notebook and turned to a page where he'd written a date and a few words.
October 4 — Ethan came to the house while Dad was at work.
“What happened on October 4?”” I asked.
“Kiara told me not to tell you that Ethan had been here.””
“Was Danielle home?””
“Yes.””
“Did she know he came?””
“I think so. She let him in through the back door.””
I sat very still.
“Did you see them together?””
“No. I saw Ethan leaving the garage. He looked angry.””
“Did he say anything to you?””
Jordan nodded.
“He asked whether I had seen a black phone.””
“What did you tell him?””
“That I hadn't.””
“Was that true?””
“I hadn't seen his phone that day.””
He turned another page.
“Then he said, ‘Tell your father to mind his own business.’”
My blood ran cold.
“Why would he say that?””
Jordan shook his head.
“I don't know.””
I looked at the date again.
October 4.
Six days before the first threatening screenshot had appeared.
Someone had been coming into my house while I was at work.
Someone had been asking about a phone that contained evidence.
And my wife had known enough about the situation to help her daughter conceal it.
I stood.
“Jordan, I need you to stay with your grandparents for a few nights while I get everything sorted out.””
His face fell.
I immediately understood how those words sounded.
“No,” I said, sitting back down.
“Wait. Let me explain.””
He stared at me.
“Are you sending me away?””
“No. Absolutely not. I should have phrased that differently.””
“Then why do I have to leave?””
“You don't. I'm going to arrange for you to stay somewhere safe only if that's what you want. You can stay here with me, too. I just need to make sure you aren't exposed to more conflict while we investigate.””
He looked away.
“I want to stay with you.””
“Then that's what we'll do. Danielle and Kiara can stay elsewhere if we need separate spaces.””
He nodded.
I squeezed his shoulder.
“You're not the person who needs to be punished here.””
Downstairs, a door slammed.
Danielle called my name.
I went to the landing.
She stood in the living room, holding her phone.
“Marcus, you need to see this.””
“What now?””
“Ethan just sent Kiara a message.””
She held out the screen.
The message was only one sentence.
Tell your mother to stop pretending she doesn't know what happened that night.
I stared at the words.
“Which night?””
Danielle looked at me.
“The night Ethan came here.””
Then another message arrived.
This one contained a photograph.
It showed Danielle standing beside Ethan in our garage.
She was holding a black phone.
May you like
And in the background, barely visible behind the workbench, was something I recognized immediately.
My son's blue mathematics notebook.
