Chapter 7: The Truth Behind the Bedroom Door

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Danielle stood near the office doorway, her hands clasped tightly in front of her. Jordan remained beside my desk, his face pale beneath the warm light of the lamp.

I could hear the refrigerator humming in the kitchen.

That was all.

“What does that mean?”” I asked.

Danielle shook her head.

“I need to speak to you privately.””

“No.””

“Marcus, please.””

“You've had plenty of opportunities to speak privately. You've had opportunities to explain the accusation against my son. You've had opportunities to tell me why you were in the garage taking that flash drive.””

She glanced at Jordan.

“Not in front of him.””

I stepped between them.

“He is the person you accused. He has a right to hear the truth.””

Danielle pressed her lips together.

“I never said he did anything criminal.””

“You told me he made your daughter feel unsafe. You demanded that I throw him out. You showed me a screenshot that supposedly proved he was sending threatening messages.””

“I believed what Kiara told me!””

“And now?””

She looked away.

“I don't know what to believe.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“That's convenient.””

Her head snapped up.

“Don't you dare talk to me like that.””

“Then give me an honest answer.””

For a moment, I thought she would shout. Instead, she sank into the chair beside the desk and covered her face with both hands.

“I was trying to protect my daughter.””

“From what?””

She didn't answer.

I turned to Jordan.

“Son, go upstairs for a few minutes.””

His expression immediately hardened.

“No.””

“Jordan—”

“You just told me I had a right to hear the truth.””

He was right.

I nodded.

“Then stay.””

Danielle looked at him through her fingers.

“I'm sorry.””

Jordan laughed once, without humor.

“You've said that before.””

“Not about this.””

“Then what are you sorry for?””

She lowered her hands.

“I shouldn't have demanded that your father send you away.””

“Why did you?””

“Because I thought it was the only way to keep things from getting worse.””

“What things?””

She looked at me.

I leaned against the desk.

“Danielle, if you want us to understand your decisions, you need to stop talking in riddles.””

She drew a shaky breath.

“Three weeks ago, Kiara told me she had been communicating with someone online. She said the person had threatened to expose private messages if she didn't do what he wanted.””

“Who?””

“Ethan.””

I exchanged a glance with Jordan.

“What did Ethan want?””

Danielle looked down at her hands.

“Money, at first. Then he wanted her to meet him without telling me. He had screenshots of conversations she was ashamed of, and he threatened to send them to people at school.””

“Did you contact his parents?””

“No.””

“Why not?””

“Because Kiara begged me not to. She was terrified that everyone would see the messages.””

I took a slow breath.

“So you knew she was being threatened.””

“Yes.””

“And you didn't tell me.””

“I was afraid you'd react badly.””

“React badly? Danielle, a teenager was being threatened. I would have helped.””

She gave a bitter little laugh.

“You say that now.””

“I would have said it then.””

She looked at Jordan.

“And that's the problem.””

My son frowned.

“What problem?””

“Kiara was convinced that your father would take your side over hers. She believed that if you became involved, he'd automatically believe you.””

Jordan stared at her.

“But I wasn't involved.””

“I know that now.””

“Then why did you keep accusing me?””

Danielle opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

I answered for her.

“Because making Jordan the problem was easier than admitting that something was happening to Kiara that we didn't understand.””

Danielle's eyes filled with tears.

“I didn't mean for it to go this far.””

Jordan looked at her.

“You put my picture in a drawer.””

She blinked.

“What?””

“My school picture. You turned it facedown and put it in a drawer while Dad was sitting right there.””

He spoke quietly, but every word landed like a stone.

“You told me I made Kiara uncomfortable. You said I was lying when I told you I hadn't done anything. You made Dad think he had to choose between us.””

Danielle began crying.

“Jordan, I was angry.””

“You were angry at me for something Ethan did?””

“I didn't understand everything.””

“Then why didn't you ask?””

She covered her mouth.

I watched my son struggle to keep his voice steady.

“You know what I thought last night? I thought Dad was going to send me away because he didn't want to lose you.””

I felt something inside me break.

Jordan turned toward me.

“I kept thinking that if I could just explain everything, you'd understand. But every time I tried, somebody interrupted me.””

I walked to him and put my hand on his shoulder.

“I'm sorry.””

He nodded, but his eyes remained fixed on Danielle.

“Do you know what the worst part is?”” he asked her.

She shook her head.

“I believed you liked me. I thought you were just strict because you wanted us to get along.””

Danielle began sobbing.

Jordan took a step back.

“But you were willing to make me look like a bad person so nobody would ask questions about Kiara.””

“That's not how it happened,” she whispered.

“Then tell us how it happened.””

Danielle stared at the floor.

Finally, she spoke.

“Ethan told Kiara he had a video of her. She thought it was something private that she'd sent him, but he said he'd show it to everyone if she didn't cooperate.””

“What was on the video?”” I asked.

“I don't know.””

“Did you see it?””

“No. I only saw screenshots of their messages.””

“Where are those screenshots?””

“On Kiara's phone. And possibly on the flash drive.””

“Possibly?””

Danielle nodded.

“She told me she had copied everything onto the drive because she wanted to make sure Ethan couldn't erase it.””

I stared at her.

“Then why did you take it?””

“Because she wanted to confront him. I was afraid she would do something reckless.””

“So you took the evidence away from her?””

“I wanted to keep it safe.””

“By deleting the garage footage?””

“I didn't delete it!””

I pointed to the external drive.

“The system recorded your login.””

She looked stunned.

Then she shook her head.

“I didn't delete the footage. I took the flash drive, but I didn't touch the camera.””

“Someone used your account.””

“I don't know who.””

“Who else has access to the upstairs study?””

She hesitated.

“Kiara.””

The room went silent.

Jordan turned toward me.

“Dad, that's why I kept telling you she knew about the camera.””

I nodded.

Danielle wiped her cheeks.

“I thought she had deleted the recording. I didn't know she'd done that.””

I studied my wife.

For the first time, I could see how the situation might have unfolded. Danielle had tried to manage her daughter's problem in secret. Kiara had feared exposure.

Both had concealed information. Somewhere along the way, protecting a frightened teenager had turned into a campaign against an innocent one.

But I still didn't know why Kiara had chosen Jordan as the target.

“What happened in the garage?”” I asked.

Danielle looked at Jordan.

He answered before she could.

“Kiara asked me to retrieve a charger. Then she took a picture of me near the cabinet. She told me to keep quiet about the second phone.””

“What was on the second phone?””

“I don't know. But she said it was Ethan's backup phone. She'd taken it from him after he left it in her car.””

Danielle covered her face.

“She told me she didn't have his phone.””

“Did you know she had it?”” I asked.

“No.””

Jordan continued.

“She said she wanted to make sure Ethan couldn't threaten her anymore. I told her she should give it to the police or tell you. That's when she got angry.””

“Why?””

“Because the phone had messages that could get her into trouble, too.””

Danielle looked up sharply.

“What kind of trouble?””

Jordan shook his head.

“I don't know. She wouldn't tell me.””

I thought about the flash drive. The deleted footage. The fabricated screenshot.

There was still a missing piece.

“Danielle, why did Kiara say Jordan was watching her?””

My wife stared at the desk.

“She told me he had been near her bedroom several times.””

“Had you seen him there?””

“No.””

“Did you ask Jordan?””

“No.””

“Why not?””

She closed her eyes.

“Because Kiara said she had proof.””

“What proof?””

“The screenshot. And the phone outside her bedroom.””

I shook my head slowly.

“You treated those things as proof without establishing who sent the message or how the phone got there.””

“I know.””

“No, Danielle. You don't understand. You took the word of one child and used it to threaten another child's home.””

Her face crumpled.

“I know.””

This time, she sounded as though she meant it.

But remorse didn't erase the damage.

Jordan picked up his notebook and walked toward the door.

“Where are you going?”” I asked.

“To my room.””

“Okay.””

He stopped beside Danielle.

For a moment, I thought he might say something cruel. I wouldn't have blamed him.

Instead, he said, “I hope Kiara is okay.””

Then he left.

Danielle stared after him.

I remained in the office, unable to decide whether I felt more anger or grief.

My wife had finally admitted that Jordan was innocent of the accusation that had nearly cost him his home.

But she still hadn't explained the most important question.

Why had she been so determined to make him leave before anyone discovered the truth?

I turned back to her.

“Danielle, there's one more thing.””

She looked at me.

“Why did you tell me that Kiara wasn't the only one involved?””

Her face went completely still.

Then she reached into her handbag and removed a folded document.

She placed it on my desk.

It was a printed email.

The sender was Kiara.

The recipient was Danielle.
