Chapter 7: The Brother Who Chose A Side
I stared at the email until the words blurred.
My brother’s name sat there.
Michael Carter.
The person who had taught me how to ride a bike.
The person who stood beside me at my wedding.
The person who held Zoria when she was a baby and told me she was going to grow up to do something incredible.
Him.
The original source of the interference.
For several minutes, I couldn’t move.
I kept telling myself there had to be an explanation.
There had to be another Michael Carter.
Another person with the same name.
Another reason.
Because the alternative was too painful.
“Dad?””
I looked up.
Zoria stood in the doorway.
She immediately noticed my face.
“What happened?””
I closed the laptop.
“Nothing.””
She frowned.
“You’re a terrible liar.””
A small, sad smile crossed my face.
That was my daughter.
Even after everything, she could still see through me.
I motioned for her to sit.
“There’s something I need to tell you.””
She sat slowly.
“Is it about Mom?””
“No.””
Her eyes widened.
“Then who?””
I took a breath.
“Uncle Michael.””
Her expression changed.
“Uncle Michael?””
I nodded.
“He may have been involved.””
The color drained from her face.
“No.””
“I don’t know everything yet.””
“He loves you.””
The words came quickly.
Like she needed to defend him.
“He always says he’s proud of me.””
I looked at her.
“And that’s why this hurts.””
She looked down.
“Why would he do something like that?””
I didn’t have an answer.
Not yet.
But I knew one thing.
I needed the truth.
I drove to Michael’s office that afternoon.
He owned a small financial consulting company downtown.
The same company he built after leaving his corporate job.
The same company I had once helped him start.
When I walked in, his assistant looked surprised.
“Mr. Carter, you don’t have an appointment.””
“I know.””
She hesitated.
“Is everything okay?””
“No.””
Something about my answer made her stop asking questions.
Michael’s office door was open.
He looked up when I entered.
And the second he saw my face…
He knew.
“Daniel.””
I closed the door behind me.
“You know why I’m here.””
He leaned back slowly.
“I was wondering when you would find out.””
Those words hit harder than anger.
Because they meant he had been waiting.
“You knew?””
He looked away.
“Sit down.””
“No.””
My voice was colder than I expected.
“I’m not here to have a comfortable conversation.””
Michael sighed.
“You always were dramatic.””
I stared at him.
“Dramatic?””
“Yes.””
He stood.
“You think everything is simple. Good people and bad people. Heroes and villains.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You sabotaged my daughter’s future.””
His face tightened.
“I helped Lena.””
“There it is.””
I shook my head.
“That’s the same excuse Vanessa used.””
“Because it’s true.””
I stepped closer.
“Explain it.””
Michael walked to the window.
“You have no idea what it’s like watching someone get everything.””
I froze.
“Everything?””
He turned around.
“You had the perfect life.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
“You got the successful career. The happy marriage. The talented daughter.””
My stomach tightened.
“Michael…”
“And what did I get?””
There it was.
The real reason.
Not logic.
Not fairness.
Resentment.
“I worked just as hard as you.””
“Yes.””
“But somehow you were always the one people admired.””
I shook my head.
“You’re my brother.””
“That doesn’t change anything.””
His voice became sharper.
“You were always chosen.””
I stared at him.
All these years.
All this anger.
And he had never said a word.
“You think my daughter deserved to pay for that?””
His expression changed slightly.
“I didn’t want her hurt.””
“But you hurt her.””
“I wanted balance.””
“Balance?””
I stepped back.
“You destroyed an eighteen-year-old girl’s opportunities because you were angry at me?””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“It wasn’t just you.””
I waited.
“Lena deserved a chance too.””
I looked at him.
“So you decided Zoria had too many.””
Michael said nothing.
That silence was enough.
I pulled out my phone.
“I have the evidence.””
His eyes moved to the screen.
“The emails.””
He looked nervous for the first time.
“You don’t understand.””
“I understand perfectly.””
“No, Daniel.””
He sat down.
“You don’t know what happened behind closed doors.””
“What happened?””
He rubbed his face.
“Lena was falling apart.””
“She was jealous.””
“She was hurting.””
“And you thought destroying Zoria would fix that?””
Michael looked away.
“I thought if Zoria stepped back, Lena could finally breathe.””
I stared at him.
“You both keep saying that.””
“What?””
“That you needed Zoria to step back.””
My voice lowered.
“But nobody ever asked why Zoria had to be the one who moved.””
Michael had no answer.
I turned toward the door.
Then he spoke.
“There’s something you should know.””
I stopped.
“What?””
Michael hesitated.
“The scholarship wasn’t the final goal.””
I looked back.
“What does that mean?””
He swallowed.
“Vanessa and I were trying to move Zoria’s college fund.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“The money attached to the scholarship wasn’t the only thing.””
I stared at him.
“What were you planning?””
Michael looked terrified.
And for the first time, I realized…
He wasn’t afraid of me.
He was afraid of what would happen if I knew everything.
“We were going to transfer ownership.””
“To who?””
He didn’t answer.
“Michael.””
His voice became a whisper.
“Lena.””
I felt the room spin.
My brother and my wife weren’t just trying to remove Zoria’s opportunities.
They were trying to redirect them.
My phone rang.
Officer Reynolds.
I answered immediately.
“Mr. Carter?””
“Yes.””
“We need you to come to the scholarship office.””
“Why?””
A pause.
Then:
“We found the original document.””
“What document?””
“The one that started everything.””
My grip tightened.
“What is it?””
His voice dropped.
“The agreement Vanessa and Michael signed.””
I froze.
“Signed for what?””
May you like
The officer answered:
“To transfer your daughter’s scholarship benefits before she ever knew they existed.””
