Chapter 6: The Person Who Helped Vanessa

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not because I was angry.

Because anger would have been easier.

Anger had direction.

This was different.

This was confusion.

Betrayal.

The kind that made you question every conversation you ever had.

Every smile.

Every moment you thought you understood someone.

Professor Ellis had given me the name.

The person who submitted the false academic violation report.

Someone who had access to Zoria’s records.

Someone who knew enough about her application to make the accusation believable.

Her debate coach.

Mr. Harper.

The man who had written one of her strongest recommendations.

The man Zoria trusted.

I sat at the kitchen table staring at the paperwork.

There was no mistake.

The signature.

The submission records.

The timestamps.

Everything connected.

But one thing didn’t make sense.

Why?

At seven in the morning, I knocked on Zoria’s door.

“Come in.””

She was sitting on her bed.

Her laptop was open.

She wasn’t studying.

She was staring at old photos.

I sat beside her.

“Hey.””

She looked at me.

“Did they fix the scholarship?””

I hated that she asked that first.

Not “what happened?””

Not “who did it?””

Just whether her future was still possible.

“They’re reviewing everything.””

She nodded.

“Okay.””

I noticed how calm she was.

Too calm.

“Zoria.””

“Yeah?””

“There’s something else.””

Her expression changed.

“More?””

I swallowed.

“Yes.””

I told her about the false academic violation.

About Mr. Harper.

About the evidence.

She looked shocked.

“No.””

“I know.””

“He wouldn’t do that.””

“That’s what I thought too.””

She stood and started pacing.

“He believed in me.””

“I know.””

“He told me I was one of the best students he’d ever coached.””

I looked at her.

“Then we need to find out why.””

She stopped.

Then she whispered:

“What if everyone who says they believe in me is lying?””

That sentence broke my heart.

Because that was the real damage.

Not the scholarship.

Not the application.

They had attacked her ability to trust.

I pulled her into a hug.

“Listen to me.””

She held on.

“You are not the things people try to take from you.””

She cried quietly.

“You always say things like that.””

“Because they’re true.””

Later that afternoon, I went to meet Mr. Harper.

He agreed to see me at the school.

When I walked into his office, he looked nervous.

“Daniel.””

I closed the door.

“You know why I’m here.””

His face changed.

“I assume it’s about Zoria.””

I placed the documents on his desk.

“Why did you submit this?””

He looked at the papers.

Then looked away.

“I didn’t.””

“Don’t lie to me.””

“I’m not.””

“Your account submitted it.””

His jaw tightened.

“I need a lawyer.””

That answer told me more than anything.

“You’re protecting someone.””

Silence.

“Who?””

He stood.

“I can’t talk about this.””

“You can.””

“No, Daniel.””

His voice cracked.

“You don’t understand what you’re dealing with.””

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

He looked toward the window.

Then whispered:

“Vanessa wasn’t working alone.””

The room went cold.

“What?””

He sat back down.

“She came to me months ago.””

My stomach turned.

“What did she ask?””

“She wanted me to convince Zoria that the university wasn’t right for her.””

I felt sick.

“But you refused.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you submit the report?””

His face fell.

“Because she found something.””

“What?””

He didn’t answer.

“Mr. Harper.””

He closed his eyes.

“She found out about my mistake.””

“What mistake?””

He looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw real fear.

“Years ago, before I became a teacher, I was involved in a situation that could end my career.””

I stared at him.

“And Vanessa used it against you?””

He nodded.

“She threatened to expose me unless I helped her.””

My hands curled into fists.

“So she blackmailed you.””

“Yes.””

The pieces were coming together.

Vanessa hadn’t just manipulated Zoria.

She had built a system around her.

Using fear.

Using guilt.

Using secrets.

But there was one question I couldn’t answer.

Why had she waited until Zoria was so close to success?

Mr. Harper looked at me.

“There’s something else you need to know.””

“What?””

He hesitated.

“Vanessa wasn’t trying to stop Zoria from getting into that university.””

I frowned.

“Then what was she trying to do?””

He looked at the file.

“The university has a special program.””

I waited.

“A program for students with extraordinary academic records.””

“So?””

His voice dropped.

“Only one student from each family can receive the legacy sponsorship attached to it.””

I stared.

“What are you saying?””

He looked at me.

“Vanessa wasn’t trying to make Zoria lose.””

A pause.

“She was trying to make sure Lena won.””

My phone suddenly buzzed.

A new email.

From the university.

Subject:

*URGENT: Final Evidence Review*

I opened it.

The first line made my blood run cold.

Mr. Carter, we have discovered the original source of the interference.

I kept reading.

And then I saw the name attached.

Not Vanessa.

Not Mr. Harper.

Someone else.

Someone who had been quietly controlling everything from the beginning.

May you like

And someone I never suspected.

*My own brother.*
