Chapter 3: The Person Vanessa Never Expected
The name on the paper sat between us like a bomb.
I looked at Officer Reynolds.
“Say it again.””
He glanced at the document.
“The report was submitted by Lena Carter.””
Nobody moved.
Not even Vanessa.
For several seconds, the only sound in the room was the ticking clock above the fireplace.
Then Vanessa laughed.
A nervous, confused laugh.
“That’s impossible.””
Officer Reynolds didn’t respond.
Vanessa shook her head.
“No. Lena would never do that.””
I looked at her.
“Wouldn’t she?””
My wife’s face tightened.
She had spent weeks telling me Lena was fragile.
Lena was hurting.
Lena needed protection.
But now Lena was the person who exposed everything.
Officer Reynolds handed me another page.
“She included screenshots of conversations between herself and Mrs. Carter.””
Vanessa immediately reached for it.
“Those are private.””
Officer Reynolds stepped back.
“They were provided as evidence.””
I read the first message.
Vanessa:
You need to understand that Zoria cannot accept this scholarship right now.
Lena:
Why? She earned it.
Vanessa:
Because you need this more.
My stomach twisted.
I kept reading.
Lena:
Mom, that’s not fair.
Vanessa:
You don’t understand. Sometimes people have to give things up for family.
I lowered the paper.
I couldn’t look at my wife.
Because now I saw the truth.
She hadn’t misunderstood the situation.
She had planned it.
“Daniel,” Vanessa whispered.
I looked at her.
“Don’t.””
“But you don’t understand.””
“No.””
My voice was calm.
And that seemed to scare her more than anger.
“I understand perfectly.””
Zoria stood silently beside me.
She looked at Lena, who had entered the room halfway through the conversation.
I hadn’t even noticed her.
She was standing near the hallway.
Her eyes were filled with tears.
“Lena?””
My wife turned.
Her face changed immediately.
“What did you do?””
Lena flinched.
“What did I do?””
“You betrayed me.””
The words came out so quickly.
So naturally.
That I almost couldn’t believe it.
Lena looked at her mother.
“No, Mom.””
Her voice shook.
“I told the truth.””
“You’re my daughter.””
“And she’s your daughter too.””
That sentence hit harder than anything else.
Vanessa stared at her.
Lena wiped her eyes.
“I never wanted Zoria to lose her scholarship.””
Nobody spoke.
“I was upset,” Lena continued.
“I was jealous. I admit that.””
She looked at Zoria.
“But I never asked for this.””
Zoria looked away.
Lena took a step closer.
“I thought Mom was just trying to make me feel better.””
She swallowed.
“Then I found the email.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“What email?””
“The one you sent.””
The room went silent again.
Lena looked devastated.
“I asked you to stop.””
Vanessa’s voice became defensive.
“I was protecting you.””
“No.””
Lena shook her head.
“You were protecting yourself.””
That was the first time I saw Vanessa speechless.
Officer Reynolds closed the folder.
“Mrs. Carter, the scholarship committee will be contacting you directly.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Daniel, please.””
I didn’t answer.
Because I didn’t know who I was looking at anymore.
The woman I married.
The mother of my children.
Or someone who could destroy one child’s future to protect another child’s feelings.
After Officer Reynolds left, the house felt different.
Quiet.
Heavy.
Zoria sat on the couch.
Lena sat across from her.
For once, there was no competition.
No jealousy.
Just two girls who had both been hurt.
“I’m sorry,” Lena whispered.
Zoria looked at her.
“For what?””
“For letting you think I wanted this.””
Zoria’s eyes filled with tears.
“I thought you hated me.””
Lena shook her head.
“I hated that I felt like I was always behind you.””
She looked down.
“But that wasn’t your fault.””
I watched my daughter take Lena’s hand.
And somehow that hurt more.
Because my daughter was still kind.
Even after everything.
Later that night, after everyone had gone to their rooms, I sat alone at the kitchen table.
The scholarship letter was still there.
I picked it up.
Then my phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
But something made me answer.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice came through.
“Is this Daniel Carter?””
“Yes.””
“This is the scholarship review office.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“I’m calling because we discovered something else during our investigation.””
I stood.
“What?””
There was a pause.
Then she said:
“Your daughter’s scholarship was not the only thing Mrs. Carter interfered with.””
My blood ran cold.
“What are you talking about?””
The woman lowered her voice.
“We found evidence that another application connected to Zoria was altered months ago.””
I stared at the dark kitchen.
“What application?””
The woman hesitated.
Then she answered.
“Her university admission application.””
I stopped breathing.
Because if that was true…
Then Vanessa hadn’t just tried to take away one opportunity.
She had been controlling my daughter’s future for much longer than I ever knew.

And the next file they were about to send me…
Had Vanessa’s name all over it.
