Chapter 9: The Truth About the Two Babies
I couldn't move.
Two baby girls.
One hospital.
One date.
One switched identification bracelet.
I looked at Lily.
Then I looked at Michael.
“Tell me you're lying.””
He shook his head.
“I wish I were.””
I backed away from him.
“Why would anyone switch babies?””
Michael looked toward the hallway.
“Because one of the babies was born into a family with money.””
I stared.
“Mine?””
“No.””
He lowered his voice.
“Rebecca's.””
I felt my stomach twist.
“Are you saying Maya is Rebecca's biological daughter?””
Michael nodded.
“And Lily is yours.””
The words hit me with the force of a physical blow.
I looked at the girl in the bed.
Lily stared back at me.
“That's why Grandpa wanted to protect me,” she whispered.
I couldn't speak.
Michael continued.
“Dad discovered the possibility after he found an old hospital report. He hired an investigator, but the records had been altered.””
“Who altered them?””
“We believe Victor paid someone.””
“Why?””
“Because Rebecca's family had a substantial inheritance. Lily was entitled to part of it.””
I stared at the floor.
“Then why did I grow up with my parents?””
“Because the switch happened at birth. Everyone believed the records were correct.””
I looked toward Lily.
“Did you know?””
She nodded slowly.
“Victor told me when I was younger.””
“Why didn't you tell anyone?””
“He said if I told, he'd make sure my mother disappeared forever.””
My chest tightened.
“And Maya?””
Lily's eyes filled.
“She didn't know. Not at first.””
I turned to Michael.
“Why did Dad keep this secret?””
“Because he wanted proof before telling you. He was afraid that if the hospital records were exposed, Victor would destroy the evidence and take Lily's inheritance.””
I laughed bitterly.
“So he left us all in the dark.””
“He was trying to protect the girls.””
“And you?””
Michael looked down.
“I was trying to protect Dad's investigation.””
I stared at him.
“By taking money from Victor?””
He nodded.
“I thought I could get the original documents back.””
“How much?””
“Fifty thousand.””
I shook my head.
“You sold your loyalty for fifty thousand dollars?””
“No.””
“Then what did you do it for?””
Michael's eyes filled.
“Because Victor told me he'd kill Rebecca if I didn't cooperate.””
I looked at Lily.
She had gone pale.
“He threatened her?””
Michael nodded.
“I believed him.””
I wanted to hit my brother.
I wanted to scream.
Instead, I stood beside the bed and took Lily's hand.
“Listen to me. Nobody is going to hurt you again.””
She began crying.
“Promise?””
I squeezed her fingers.
“I promise.””
A hospital security officer appeared at the door.
“Mr. Bennett, we need to speak with you.””
I turned.
“What happened?””
“Police officers are here. They would like to interview everyone involved.””
I nodded.
“Of course.””
Before leaving, I looked at Michael.
“You're going to tell them everything.””
He nodded.
“I will.””
“And you're going to show them every document you have.””
“Yes.””
I stepped into the corridor.
Rebecca was waiting near the nurses' station.
When she saw me, she immediately approached.
“Have you spoken to Lily?””
“Yes.””
“Did she tell you?””
I nodded.
Rebecca's face crumpled.
“I wanted to tell you years ago.””
“Why didn't you?””
“Victor threatened to expose the hospital switch. He said he'd use it to take Lily's inheritance and make sure neither of us ever saw her again.””
I looked at her.
“Why did Claire help him?””
Rebecca lowered her eyes.
“Because she thought she was protecting Maya.””
I stared.
“By making her carry evidence?””
“No. Claire didn't know Victor had hidden the USB inside the backpack until recently.””
“Then why was she trying to take it?””
“Because she knew it contained the original transfer records. She wanted to destroy them before Victor could use them.””
I shook my head.
“That makes no sense. If she wanted to destroy the evidence, why hide it in Maya's bag?””
Rebecca looked toward the recovery room.
“Because she was trying to get it out of the house without Victor finding it.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“Claire discovered that Victor had been watching your house. She couldn't leave with the documents herself. She thought he wouldn't search a child's schoolbag.””
I stared at the pink backpack.
“Then why did she tell me opening it would destroy our family?””
Rebecca's voice broke.
“Because the documents also contain the original hospital records.””
I looked at her.
“And the truth about Maya?””
Rebecca nodded.
“Everything.””
A police officer approached us.
“Mr. Bennett, we'd like to examine the backpack.””
I agreed.
The officer placed it on a table in a private room.
A second officer photographed the exterior.
Then they carefully opened the damaged lining.
Inside were a small USB drive, several folded documents, and a sealed envelope.
The officer examined the papers.
His expression changed.
“Mr. Bennett, I think you should see this.””
He handed me a document.
It was a hospital report dated October 14, sixteen years earlier.
Two newborn girls.
Two identification numbers.
Two sets of fingerprints.
And a handwritten note at the bottom.
*Patient A — Infant of Rebecca Morgan.*
*Patient B — Infant of Claire Bennett.*
I read the lines again.
Then I saw another name.
The nurse who had signed the report.
*Nia Williams.*
I stared at the paper.
Nurse Nia.
The same woman who had whispered to me in the emergency room.
The same woman who had warned me not to let Claire open the backpack.
I looked at the officer.
“Do you know where I can find Nurse Nia?””
He frowned.
“Why?””
I pointed to the signature.
“Because she signed this report sixteen years ago.””
The officer examined it.
Then he said something that made my stomach drop.
“Mr. Bennett, Nurse Nia wasn't employed at this hospital sixteen years ago.””
I looked up.
“What?””
He turned the paper around.
“The signature may be hers, but the document itself appears to have been created much later.””
I stared at the report.
Someone had forged it.
And suddenly, I realized that we still didn't know which baby had actually been switched.
The officer removed the USB drive and connected it to a secure forensic computer.
A folder appeared.
Inside were dozens of scanned documents.
The first was a financial record.
The second was a birth certificate.
The third was a video file.
Its title read:
*RICHARD BENNETT — FINAL STATEMENT.*
I clicked play.
My father's face appeared on the screen.
He looked older than I remembered.
His voice was weak.
But his words were clear.
“If you're watching this, it means Victor has finally found the documents.””
He paused.
Then he looked directly into the camera.
“Daniel, I need you to understand something.””
He swallowed.
“Neither Claire nor Michael knows the full truth.””
I leaned closer.
My father's next words changed everything.
“Lily was never the child we were searching for.””
The screen flickered.
Then Dad said:
“The baby switched with Maya was not Rebecca's daughter.””
He leaned forward.
May you like
“It was my granddaughter.””
The video ended.
