Chapter 2: The Man in the Photograph

For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything except the monitor beside Maya's bed.

I stared at the photograph.

Claire was standing beside a tall man wearing a dark jacket. His arm was around her waist. They were outside a building I didn't recognize.

But it wasn't the man's face that frightened me.

It was the date printed in the lower corner.

Three days earlier.

I looked at Maya.

“Sweetheart, where did you get this?””

“From the backpack.””

“Did Mommy put it there?””

Maya nodded.

“Why?””

“She said I wasn't supposed to show anyone.””

I looked toward Nurse Nia.

She had stopped writing on her clipboard.

“Mr. Bennett,” she said gently, “perhaps we should let Maya explain this at her own pace.””

I nodded.

Then I turned back to my daughter.

“Did that man come to our house?””

Maya nodded again.

“Last night.””

“What time?””

“After you went upstairs.””

I frowned.

“I was home all evening.””

“You were in your office.””

The answer landed harder than I expected.

I had been working late on my presentation. I remembered hearing Claire moving around downstairs, opening cupboards, and making a phone call.

I'd assumed she was preparing for the weekend.

“What happened when he came?””

Maya looked at the door.

“Mommy told me to stay in my room.””

“And you did?””

She nodded.

“But I heard them arguing.””

“What were they arguing about?””

Maya rubbed the edge of the backpack.

“The money.””

“What money?””

She didn't answer immediately.

Then she looked up.

“Daddy, Mommy said she couldn't give him any more.””

My throat tightened.

“Give him what?””

“Money.””

I sat down.

“How much?””

“I don't know. I heard him say twenty thousand.””

Nia exchanged a brief glance with the other nurse.

I tried to keep my voice steady.

“Did you see the man?””

Maya nodded.

“He came upstairs.””

My entire body stiffened.

“He came upstairs?””

“He opened my bedroom door.””

“Why?””

“He wanted to know where you kept your papers.””

I stared at her.

“What papers?””

“The ones in your study.””

I remembered the locked filing cabinet in my office. It contained tax documents, property records, and paperwork from my business.

Nothing a stranger should have known about.

“What did you tell him?””

“I said I didn't know.””

Maya's eyes filled with tears.

“He got angry.””

I leaned closer.

“Did he hurt you?””

She shook her head.

“No. But he grabbed my backpack.””

“Why?””

“He said Mommy had hidden something in it.””

I looked down at the pink bag.

“What did he hide?””

Maya swallowed.

“I don't know. I didn't see.””

Nia gently placed a hand on the bedrail.

“Maya, can you tell us whether your stomach started hurting before or after the man visited?””

“Before.””

That answer confused me.

“Before?””

Maya nodded.

“I started feeling sick on Thursday.””

It was Saturday.

My stomach dropped.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“I did.””

I searched my memory.

Thursday evening, I'd been reviewing documents in the study. Maya had come to the doorway and said she didn't feel well.

I remembered telling her to ask her mother for some water because I was on a work call.

I'd forgotten.

The realization made me feel physically ill.

“I should have listened,” I whispered.

Maya reached for my hand.

“You didn't know, Daddy.””

I squeezed her fingers.

“No, sweetheart. But I should have.””

A doctor entered a few minutes later.

Dr. Harris introduced himself, reviewed Maya's symptoms, and explained that they needed to investigate the abdominal pain immediately.

“Her tenderness is concerning,” he said.

“We're arranging blood tests and imaging. We don't want to assume it's something minor.””

I nodded.

“Whatever she needs.””

Dr. Harris glanced at the backpack.

“Is there something inside that belongs to the hospital?””

“No,” I replied.

Maya suddenly spoke.

“Please don't throw it away.””

Dr. Harris crouched.

“We won't, Maya. Nobody is going to take your things without explaining why.””

She looked at me.

“Daddy, can you keep it?””

I took the backpack and placed it on the chair beside me.

“I'm keeping it.””

Just then, my phone vibrated.

Claire.

I ignored the call.

It vibrated again.

Then a message appeared.

*Claire: Daniel, I need you to leave that hospital immediately.*

Another message followed.

*Claire: You have no idea what Maya has done.*

I stared at the screen.

Maya watched my face.

“Is Mommy angry?””

I locked my phone.

“No. She's just upset.””

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“Please don't tell her where the bag is.””

I looked at the pink backpack.

Then I looked at my daughter.

“I won't.””

A few minutes later, Nia returned.

“Mr. Bennett, the doctor would like to speak with you privately.””

I followed her into a small consultation room.

She closed the door.

“Has your daughter ever told you that someone asked her to keep secrets from you?””

I thought about the photograph.

“The man last night told her not to tell me.””

Nia nodded slowly.

“Has she mentioned being threatened?””

“No.””

“Has she mentioned being asked to carry anything?””

I hesitated.

“The backpack?””

“Possibly.””

She pulled a chair closer.

“Mr. Bennett, I want to explain something. We aren't assuming your wife has done anything wrong. But Maya's statements raise concerns, and we have a responsibility to document them and involve the appropriate safeguarding professionals.””

I understood.

And for the first time, I wondered whether the situation was much bigger than an argument between my wife and a stranger.

“Can I ask you something?”” I said.

“Of course.””

“Why did you ask my wife to leave?””

Nia paused.

“Because when I asked Maya whether she wanted her mother present during the examination, she began crying uncontrollably.””

I looked down.

“She said something else, too.””

“What?””

Nia opened her notes.

“She said, 'Mommy told me that if Daddy finds the papers, he'll go to prison.''”

My chair seemed to shift beneath me.

“What papers?””

“That is what we're trying to understand.””

I returned to Maya's room.

She had been moved to another bed for testing.

The backpack was still beside my chair.

I picked it up.

It felt heavier than it should have.

I unzipped the main compartment and found her usual school supplies: a pink pencil case, two notebooks, a library book, and a small stuffed rabbit.

Everything looked ordinary.

Then I noticed something strange.

The bottom of the backpack was unusually stiff.

I pressed it.

Something crackled underneath the lining.

I turned it over.

There was a tiny opening near the inner seam, held shut with several stitches that didn't match the original fabric.

Someone had opened the lining and sewn it back together.

I called Nia.

She examined the bag without touching the damaged seam.

“Don't pull anything out,” she advised.

“We'll need to document what is there and follow the appropriate procedures.””

I nodded.

Then my phone rang again.

This time, it wasn't Claire.

It was my older brother, Michael.

I answered.

“Michael?””

His voice was low.

“Daniel, where are you?””

“At the hospital. Why?””

There was a pause.

Then he said something that made my legs go weak.

“Claire just called me. She says Maya stole something from her.””

“What?””

“A USB drive.””

I looked at the backpack.

Michael continued.

“She says if you find it, you need to destroy it immediately.””

I swallowed.

“Why?””

My brother took a shaky breath.

“Because it contains documents proving that someone has been using your name to move money.””

I stared at the bag.

May you like

Then Michael added:

“And Daniel, the signature on those documents isn't yours.””
