Chapter 3: The Signature That Wasn't Mine

I called Michael back immediately.

He answered on the first ring.

“Tell me exactly what Claire said.””

“I don't know everything,” he replied.

“She was hysterical.””

“Michael, stop protecting her. What did she tell you?””

A long silence followed.

Then he said, “She told me someone had opened a business account using your personal information.””

I leaned against the hospital corridor wall.

“What business account?””

“An investment company. Apparently, money has been moving through it for months.””

“Whose money?””

“I don't know.””

“Then why did she say my name?””

“Because the account is registered under your identity.””

I closed my eyes.

“That's impossible.””

“I know.””

My brother lowered his voice.

“Daniel, Claire said the USB contains copies of the transactions, the account details, and the documents used to open it.””

I looked through the glass at Maya.

She was lying on her side while a nurse adjusted her IV.

“Why would Claire have something like that?””

Michael hesitated.

“Because she was involved.””

The corridor seemed to become colder.

“What did you say?””

“I think she helped set it up.””

I stared at the floor.

My wife.

My daughter's mother.

The woman who had kissed me goodbye that morning.

“Michael, are you certain?””

“No. But there's something else.””

“What?””

“She told me the man involved was coming back tonight.””

I looked at the clock.

It was almost noon.

“Who is he?””

“I don't know his name. But Claire said he was getting impatient.””

I ended the call.

For several minutes, I stood completely still.

Then I returned to Maya's room.

Nurse Nia was speaking with Dr. Harris.

The doctor approached me.

“We have some preliminary results.””

My heart jumped.

“What is it?””

“Her examination suggests an acute abdominal condition. We're arranging urgent imaging, and pediatric surgery has been consulted because appendicitis is a concern.””

I gripped the chair.

“Is she going to be okay?””

“We're moving quickly. Right now, our priority is treating the cause of her pain.””

I nodded.

“Do whatever you need to do.””

Maya looked at me.

“Daddy?””

I moved beside her.

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Are you angry?””

I brushed a loose strand of hair away from her forehead.

“No.””

“Even about the backpack?””

“Especially not about the backpack.””

She stared at the ceiling.

“Mommy said I ruined everything.””

My chest tightened.

“You didn't ruin anything.””

“She said if I told you, we would lose our house.””

I pulled the chair closer.

“Listen to me. No matter what happens with money, houses, or anything else, you're my daughter. Nothing changes that.””

Maya's chin trembled.

“Promise?””

“I promise.””

She reached for my hand.

Then she whispered, “I heard Mommy crying.””

“When?””

“After the man left.””

“What did she say?””

Maya closed her eyes.

“She said, 'I can't do this to Daniel anymore.''”

I didn't know what to make of that.

For one brief moment, I wondered whether Claire had been trapped in something she hadn't fully understood.

Then I remembered her standing in our kitchen, dismissing Maya's pain.

I remembered her trying to take the backpack.

And I remembered her screaming that opening it would destroy our family.

A few minutes later, a hospital social worker named Elaine arrived.

She introduced herself and explained that she wanted to speak with Maya privately, with my permission and in accordance with the hospital's safeguarding procedures.

I agreed.

Before leaving, Maya caught my sleeve.

“Daddy?””

“I'm right outside.””

“Don't let Mommy take the bag.””

“I won't.””

Elaine led her into a nearby consultation room while I remained with Nia.

I stared at the pink backpack.

“Could someone have hidden something illegal inside it?””

Nia answered carefully.

“We don't know what's inside, Mr. Bennett. That's why we're documenting everything and involving the appropriate authorities.””

I nodded.

My phone vibrated.

Claire again.

This time, I answered.

“Daniel!”” she cried.

“Where is Maya?””

“She is being treated.””

“Put her on the phone.””

“She needs rest.””

“I am her mother!””

“And I'm her father.””

Her breathing sounded ragged.

“Listen to me. You need to bring that backpack home.””

“No.””

“Daniel, please.””

“What's inside it, Claire?””

Silence.

“Claire?””

“You don't understand.””

“Then explain it.””

“I made a mistake.””

“What kind of mistake?””

She began crying.

“I was trying to protect us.””

“From what?””

“From losing everything.””

I looked toward the consultation room.

“Did you put something in Maya's backpack?””

“Just give it to me.””

“Did you?””

“Daniel, please. You have to trust me.””

I laughed once, bitterly.

“Trust you? You told me our daughter was exaggerating while she was in unbearable pain. Then you came to the hospital and tried to take her bag.””

“She doesn't know what she's carrying!””

“Then tell me.””

My wife began speaking so quickly that I struggled to understand her.

“The man in the photograph isn't who you think he is.””

“Who is he?””

“His name is Victor.””

“Who is Victor?””

“Someone who can ruin us.””

I lowered my voice.

“Did he threaten Maya?””

Claire went silent.

That silence told me more than her words could have.

“Claire?””

“He wouldn't have hurt her.””

“That's not what I asked.””

She began sobbing.

“I never wanted her involved.””

“But she is involved, isn't she?””

A sharp breath came through the phone.

Then Claire said something that made my blood turn cold.

“Daniel, the USB isn't the only thing inside that backpack.””

I looked at the bag.

“What else is there?””

Before she could answer, someone spoke in the background.

A man's voice.

“Claire. Give me the phone.””

My wife gasped.

“Victor, not now.””

Then the line went dead.

I immediately called her back.

No answer.

I tried again.

Nothing.

Nia approached.

“Mr. Bennett?””

I turned.

“There's a man named Victor. He may be involved in whatever is happening.””

Nia's expression became serious.

“Have you told hospital security?””

“Not yet.””

“Let's do that now.””

As we walked toward the nurses' station, I received another message.

It came from an unknown number.

*You have something that belongs to me.*

A second message appeared.

*Bring the pink backpack to the parking garage. Come alone.*

I stared at the screen.

Then a third message arrived.

*Or ask your wife what happened to the little girl who carried it before Maya.*

My blood ran cold.

There had been another child?

I looked toward the consultation room.

May you like

Maya was still inside.

And suddenly, I understood that the secret in that backpack might not have started with my family at all.
