Chapter 9: The Recording That Changed Everything

I didn't sleep much that night.

Vanessa's alleged recording kept running through my mind.

What could she possibly have captured that would make anyone question my ability to care for Jordan?

I'd never hurt my son.

I'd never neglected him.

But I knew how easily a carefully edited recording could make an innocent moment look suspicious.

The next morning, Daniel arranged a meeting with an investigator who specialized in financial and documentary evidence.

His name was Thomas Greene.

He reviewed everything Denise had provided.

Then he asked me to explain my work schedule.

I did.

"I leave around six-thirty most mornings. Sometimes earlier if there's a site inspection.""

"And Vanessa manages the household during those hours?""

"Yes.""

"Did you ever give her authority to discipline Jordan?""

"Within reason. I expected her to treat all three children equally.""

Thomas wrote something down.

"Did you know she was restricting Jordan's access to food?""

"No.""

"Did you receive any reports from the school?""

"Not directly. Vanessa received them.""

He nodded.

"Do you have the original messages?""

"I've requested them from the school.""

"Good.""

Then he asked me about the recording.

"Have you seen it?""

"No.""

"Has anyone described its contents?""

"Only Denise. She said Vanessa intends to use it against me.""

Thomas leaned back.

"Then don't speculate. We need the original file, its date, and its context.""

I agreed.

That afternoon, I received a call from Vanessa.

I almost didn't answer.

But Daniel had advised me to keep communications documented and avoid emotional arguments.

"Hello.""

"Marcus.""

Her voice sounded unusually soft.

"We need to talk.""

"What about?""

"Jordan.""

I looked through the window.

My son was sitting at the dining table doing homework.

"What about him?""

"I miss the children.""

"Then you should discuss appropriate contact arrangements through the attorneys.""

She sighed.

"You're making this unnecessarily complicated.""

I remained silent.

Then she said:

"I know you're angry. But I think we should meet somewhere and talk like adults.""

"About what?""

"About April 15.""

I looked at my phone.

"What's happening on April 15, Vanessa?""

She paused.

Then she said:

"The transfer.""

"Which transfer?""

"You know exactly what I mean.""

"Then explain it.""

Her voice became colder.

"Marcus, I have enough evidence to show that you're not capable of managing this family properly.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What evidence?""

"You'll see.""

The call ended.

I immediately informed Daniel.

He asked me to preserve the call log and any future messages.

Then, two hours later, Vanessa sent an email.

It contained a video attachment.

The subject line read:

*What You Need to Remember.*

I didn't open it immediately.

I forwarded it to Daniel.

He called within minutes.

"Marcus, don't view or share this until we've preserved the original.""

He arranged for the file to be examined.

The following morning, he invited me to his office.

Thomas Greene was there.

So was a digital evidence specialist.

They placed a laptop on the table.

"Are you ready?"" Thomas asked.

I nodded.

The video began.

It showed our kitchen.

The date in the corner was February 8.

I recognized the scene immediately.

I was standing near the refrigerator, wearing my work shirt.

Jordan was sitting at the table.

He looked upset.

My recorded voice was raised.

"Jordan, how many times have I told you not to take things without asking?""

The video cut.

Then it showed me pointing toward the hallway.

"Go upstairs. We'll talk about this later.""

Jordan lowered his head.

The video ended.

I stared at the screen.

For a moment, I didn't understand.

Then I remembered.

February 8.

That was the evening I'd discovered Jordan had taken a snack from the refrigerator before dinner.

I'd been on an important call with a subcontractor.

The kitchen had been chaotic.

I'd told him not to take food without asking because I'd thought he'd taken something from Caleb's lunchbox.

I hadn't realized Vanessa had already told him that he wasn't allowed to eat between meals.

I had raised my voice.

I had sent him upstairs.

And I'd apologized to him afterward.

But the video didn't show that.

Thomas paused the screen.

"Does this appear to be an accurate recording?""

"The moment itself, yes. But it's incomplete.""

"How so?""

I explained what had happened before and after.

The specialist examined the file.

"There are signs that this clip has been shortened.""

He showed me the metadata.

The video had originally been much longer.

Several segments had been removed.

"Can you recover them?""

"Possibly. We need the original recording device or an unaltered copy.""

I sat back.

"Vanessa had access to the old kitchen camera.""

Thomas nodded.

"That may explain the footage.""

Daniel looked at the specialist.

"Can we establish when the original recording was made?""

"Yes. We can examine the metadata and compare it with the available security records.""

Then Thomas asked me something.

"Do you have your son's recordings?""

I nodded.

Jordan's phone was with me.

I had preserved it without deleting or editing anything.

The specialist examined the videos.

There were eleven recordings.

Some were short.

Some lasted several minutes.

The first showed Vanessa removing Jordan's breakfast from the table.

The second showed her taking food from his lunchbox.

The third showed her telling him that he wasn't allowed to eat snacks because his father was already spending too much money.

Then we reached a recording dated February 8.

The same day as my video.

The specialist played it.

The camera angle was different.

It showed the kitchen from near the refrigerator.

Jordan stood beside the counter.

He was holding a small packet of crackers.

Vanessa's voice came from behind the camera.

"Put that back.""

Jordan looked toward her.

"I'm hungry.""

"You already ate.""

"That was a long time ago.""

"Your father doesn't need another expense.""

"But Dad buys them.""

Vanessa stepped into the frame.

"Your father doesn't understand how much you cost.""

Jordan lowered his eyes.

Then he asked:

"Can I have just two?""

Vanessa took the crackers.

"No.""

The video continued.

A few minutes later, I entered the kitchen.

I saw Jordan with the empty packet.

I asked him why he'd taken food without asking.

He said nothing.

I raised my voice.

Then I sent him upstairs.

But the recording didn't end there.

It continued.

After I left the kitchen, Vanessa walked toward the camera.

She smiled.

Then she said something quietly.

"That's perfect.""

I leaned forward.

The specialist increased the volume.

Vanessa continued.

"Now he'll finally understand that Marcus is the problem.""

The room went silent.

Daniel looked at me.

Thomas paused the video.

"That statement is significant.""

I couldn't take my eyes off the screen.

The recording continued for another minute.

Vanessa picked up her phone and called someone.

"Richard? It's done.""

A man's voice answered faintly.

"Did he see it?""

"Yes.""

"And?""

"He sent Jordan upstairs.""

There was a pause.

Then Vanessa laughed.

"Once I have enough of these, Marcus won't be able to argue.""

I felt my hands begin shaking.

The video ended.

Thomas sat back.

"That appears to be a different context from the clip she sent you.""

Daniel nodded.

"We'll preserve both versions and have the specialist document the edits.""

I stared at the laptop.

"Can we find out who she was speaking to?""

The specialist examined the file.

"Possibly, depending on the original recording and the audio quality.""

Daniel closed the folder.

"This changes the situation significantly.""

I looked at him.

"How?""

"It suggests that the recording may have been created and selectively edited for a specific purpose.""

I thought about Jordan.

He had been punished for taking crackers because he was hungry.

Then I had been recorded disciplining him.

And Vanessa had apparently celebrated because the footage could be used against me.

I stood.

"I want to see my son.""

Daniel nodded.

"Go.""

When I arrived at Renee's house, Jordan was sitting on the floor building a model car.

He looked up.

"Dad!""

I crouched beside him.

"Hey, buddy.""

He examined my face.

"Are you okay?""

I smiled.

"I'm okay.""

He returned to his model.

Then he asked quietly:

"Did you see the video?""

I froze.

"Which video?""

"The one Mom Vanessa made.""

I sat beside him.

"How did you know about it?""

He put down the small screwdriver.

"She told me she was going to show people that you were mean to me.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"Did she tell you that?""

He nodded.

"She said if you got in trouble, I would have to live somewhere else.""

I pulled him close.

"Listen to me. You are not responsible for what adults say or do.""

Jordan rested his head against my chest.

Then he whispered:

"I knew you weren't really mad because I was hungry.""

I closed my eyes.

"Of course I wasn't.""

"You just didn't know.""

I couldn't speak.

He looked up.

"Can I ask you something?""

"Anything.""

"Will Caleb and Mia be okay?""

I smiled sadly.

"We're going to make sure they are.""

He nodded.

Then he returned to his model car.

I sat there watching him.

My son had spent months worrying about everyone except himself.

And I was beginning to understand just how carefully Vanessa had constructed the lies surrounding our family.

That evening, Daniel called.

"Marcus, we received another document.""

"What is it?""

"Richard Parker has withdrawn from the proposed property arrangement.""

I exhaled.

"Good.""

"But there's something else.""

"What?""

"An application for a financial loan was submitted using Reed Family Services as the borrower. Your property was listed as proposed collateral.""

I sat down.

"Was it approved?""

"Not yet.""

"Then stop it.""

"We've already notified the institution that you dispute the underlying documents.""

I looked at the clock.

April 14.

One day before the final transfer.

Then Daniel said:

"There's one more thing. The person who submitted the application wasn't Vanessa.""

I frowned.

"Who was it?""

May you like

He paused.

"Her former husband.""
