Chapter 7: The Man Who Wanted My House

At exactly seven o'clock the following evening, someone knocked on our front door.

I was standing in the living room.

Vanessa had spent the previous hour preparing the house as if we were hosting an important business dinner.

She had arranged fresh flowers on the dining table, lit scented candles, and placed three glasses beside a bottle of sparkling water.

When the doorbell rang, she smoothed her blouse.

"Please behave yourself," she whispered.

I didn't answer.

She opened the door.

A tall man in a charcoal suit stood outside.

He was in his early forties, carried a leather briefcase, and wore an expensive-looking watch.

"Vanessa," he said.

"Richard. Come in.""

She turned toward me.

"Marcus, this is Richard Parker.""

I recognized the name.

Parker Property Group.

The photograph Jordan had taken.

Richard extended his hand.

"Pleasure to meet you.""

I looked at his hand before shaking it.

"What's this about?""

He glanced at Vanessa.

She smiled.

"Richard is helping us organize some family matters.""

Richard placed his briefcase on the dining table.

"More specifically, I'm here to discuss a property restructuring opportunity.""

I didn't sit.

"What property?""

He opened his briefcase and removed several documents.

"Your home.""

I looked at Vanessa.

She was watching me with an expression that suggested I was supposed to be impressed.

Richard continued.

"Vanessa has explained that the current ownership arrangement may not be ideal for your family's long-term financial goals.""

I stared at him.

"What ownership arrangement?""

He turned a page.

"According to the preliminary documents, the property could be transferred into a family holding company.""

"Which company?""

"Reed Family Services LLC.""

I almost laughed.

"That company belongs to my wife.""

Richard looked at Vanessa.

She stepped forward.

"Marcus, it's simply a way to protect our assets.""

"From whom?""

"Unexpected financial difficulties.""

I looked at Richard.

"Who contacted you?""

"Vanessa.""

"Did you verify that I agreed to this?""

He hesitated.

"She indicated that you were aware of the arrangement.""

I pulled out my phone.

"Well, now you're aware that I don't agree.""

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

"Marcus, please.""

I placed the phone on the table.

"Did you prepare these documents?""

Richard closed his briefcase slightly.

"I prepared a proposed structure.""

"Using my property?""

"With the intention of obtaining the necessary approvals.""

"Whose approvals?""

He looked uncomfortable.

"Both parties, depending on the final arrangement.""

I pointed toward the paperwork.

"Have you filed anything with the county?""

"No transfer has been completed.""

"Good. Then we're done.""

Vanessa stepped between us.

"You're being unreasonable!""

Richard stood.

"Perhaps we should reschedule.""

"No," I said.

"I'd like to know something first.""

I turned toward him.

"How much was Vanessa paying you?""

He frowned.

"That's a private business matter.""

"Then you won't mind answering through the appropriate legal channels.""

Richard closed his briefcase.

"Good evening, Mr. Reed.""

He left without another word.

Vanessa slammed the front door.

"You just ruined everything!""

I turned toward her.

"What exactly did I ruin?""

"An opportunity!""

"To transfer my house into your company?""

"Our company.""

"Your company, Vanessa. You created it without telling me.""

She laughed.

"You think you know everything because you manage construction projects?""

"No. I know enough to recognize when someone is trying to transfer property without the owner's consent.""

Her expression changed.

Then she said something I will never forget.

"You were never supposed to find out this early.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

She looked away.

"I didn't mean that.""

But she'd said it.

And I had heard every word.

I took out my phone and called Daniel.

He answered immediately.

"Marcus?""

"Richard Parker just came to my house with property transfer documents.""

Daniel went quiet.

"Did you sign anything?""

"No.""

"Good. Did he leave copies?""

I looked at the table.

"Yes.""

"Photograph everything. Don't alter the documents.""

I did as he instructed.

Then Daniel asked me to send him the name of the property group.

After the call, Vanessa walked into the kitchen.

I followed her.

"How long have you been planning this?""

She opened the refrigerator.

"Planning what?""

"Transferring the house.""

She removed a bottle of water.

"You're obsessed.""

"Did you approach Richard before or after you opened the company?""

She took a drink.

"Why does it matter?""

"Because you have been using our family finances without my knowledge.""

She put the bottle down.

"Your finances.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

"Your money. Your house. Your son.

Your rules. That's how you've treated me from the beginning.""

I felt a chill.

"Is that why you punished Jordan?""

She looked directly at me.

"Jordan was never supposed to be the center of this family.""

"He was a child.""

"He was your responsibility before I came along.""

"And he remained my responsibility after you married me.""

She laughed.

"Exactly.""

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

Then she leaned closer.

"You want to know why I got tired of him? Because everything revolved around him. Every decision.

Every dollar. Every conversation.""

"He's ten.""

"And Caleb and Mia deserve something too!""

"They have everything they need.""

"Not everything they deserve.""

I stared at her.

For a moment, I saw the woman I'd married.

The woman who had practiced basketball with my son.

The woman who had promised to love him.

Then I saw the woman standing in front of me now.

She had confused being part of a family with having control over it.

My phone vibrated.

It was Daniel.

He had sent a message.

*I checked the county property records. There is an application connected to Reed Family Services that appears to reference your address. It has not transferred ownership, but I need you to review something immediately.*

A document followed.

I opened it.

It was an application for a property lien.

The applicant was Reed Family Services LLC.

The amount listed was $85,000.

The description claimed the company had provided substantial renovation and maintenance services to the property.

I stared at the figure.

Vanessa had never spent $85,000 renovating our home.

I looked at the dates.

Several alleged payments had occurred while I was at work.

I forwarded the document to Daniel.

He called immediately.

"Marcus, did you authorize this debt?""

"No.""

"Did you sign a renovation agreement?""

"Absolutely not.""

"Then preserve the document. We'll need to challenge it.""

I turned toward Vanessa.

She was standing in the doorway.

"You filed a lien against my house?""

She said nothing.

"Was the company supposed to receive eighty-five thousand dollars?""

She finally answered.

"You don't understand how property works.""

"Then explain it.""

She crossed her arms.

"I invested in this house.""

"With whose money?""

She looked at me.

And I knew.

The money from Jordan's account.

The money she'd taken from the education savings fund.

I felt physically sick.

"Did you use his money to claim you renovated my house?""

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

"Don't act like you're some innocent victim. You gave me access to this family.""

I took a step back.

"No. I gave you my trust.""

She walked away.

That night, I moved my important documents to a secure location and arranged for the locks to be changed with legal guidance.

I also made sure Jordan and the other children remained with Renee.

At eleven-thirty, I received a message from an unknown number.

*Mr. Reed, my name is Denise. I used to work with Vanessa. You need to know what she has been telling people about your son.*

I stared at the screen.

A second message appeared.

*She told us Jordan would be removed from the household before April 15. She said the property and money would finally be hers after that.*

Then Denise sent a photograph.

It showed a document with a heading I recognized immediately.

*Family Guardianship and Financial Authority Agreement.*

My name appeared at the top.

Vanessa's name appeared below it.

And beside Jordan's name was a handwritten note.

*Temporary placement pending financial restructuring.*

I read the words again.

Then I called Daniel.

"There's another document.""

His voice became serious.

"Send it immediately.""

I did.

A few seconds later, he said:

"Marcus, I think we're dealing with something much bigger than a property dispute.""

I looked at the empty kitchen.

"How much bigger?""

May you like

Daniel paused.

"Big enough that I want you to contact the appropriate authorities before April 15.""
