Chapter 8: The Truth About April 15
The following morning, I met Denise at a coffee shop near downtown Atlanta.
She arrived carrying a large handbag and looking over her shoulder.
She was in her early thirties, wore a gray sweater, and seemed nervous.
"Mr. Reed?""
I stood.
"Denise?""
She nodded.
We sat near the window.
I ordered coffee.
She didn't order anything.
"Thank you for meeting me," I said.
Denise folded her hands.
"I wasn't sure whether I should contact you.""
"Why did you?""
She looked down.
"Because I have children of my own.""
I waited.
She continued.
"I worked with Vanessa at a property administration company two years ago. We stayed in touch after she left.""
"What did she tell you?""
"At first, she said she was building a business. She wanted to manage small rental properties and help families organize their assets.""
I frowned.
"That's what her company claims to do.""
"Yes. But eventually, she started talking about your house.""
Denise opened her handbag and removed a folder.
"She told me your property was worth considerably more than what you owed on the mortgage.""
I leaned forward.
"How did she know that?""
"She had copies of your financial documents.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
Denise continued.
"She said she was helping you restructure the property. She wanted to move it into her company and use the equity to secure financing.""
"Without my permission?""
"She said you would sign eventually.""
I shook my head.
"Why did she need Jordan's savings?""
Denise hesitated.
"Because the company needed money to demonstrate that it had sufficient assets and operating capital.""
I stared at her.
"She used my son's education fund to finance her company?""
Denise nodded.
"That's what I understood.""
I opened the folder.
Inside were copies of emails, company statements, and several handwritten notes.
One email was dated February 20.
Once the household arrangement is finalized, the company can proceed with the property transfer.
Another, dated March 2, read:
Marcus is becoming suspicious. I need to move faster.
I looked up.
"What does household arrangement mean?""
Denise took a breath.
"She said she wanted Jordan out of the house.""
My fingers tightened around the paper.
"Why?""
"She believed that if Jordan lived elsewhere, you would eventually stop making financial decisions around him.""
I stared at her.
Denise continued.
"She also said Caleb and Mia would receive more attention once Jordan was no longer there.""
I looked down.
There was another email.
This one was dated March 11.
April 15 is the final date. By then, the company should have the necessary paperwork, and the family will have been moved into the new arrangement.
I looked up.
"What new arrangement?""
Denise shook her head.
"She never gave me all the details.""
"Who else knows about this?""
"Richard Parker.""
I leaned back.
"He's involved?""
"He introduced Vanessa to someone who could help arrange the property financing.""
I showed her the photograph of the guardianship document.
Denise looked uncomfortable.
"She showed me something similar.""
"Was it legitimate?""
"I don't know. But she told me that if you refused to cooperate, she would use your work schedule and Jordan's emotional difficulties to argue that you couldn't provide a stable home.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"My son is not emotionally unstable.""
"She said he was difficult. She said he was causing problems.""
I closed the folder.
"Why are you telling me this now?""
Denise looked directly at me.
"Because last week, she told me something I couldn't ignore.""
"What?""
"She said Jordan had finally started keeping quiet.""
I stared at her.
Denise continued.
"She laughed and said he had learned not to ask for food anymore.""
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
Then she added:
"She also said she was worried he had recorded something.""
I thought about the phone in Jordan's backpack.
The videos.
The empty lunchbox.
The recording of Vanessa throwing away his food.
I thanked Denise and asked whether she would be willing to speak with my attorney.
She agreed.
I sent Daniel the documents immediately.
That afternoon, he arranged a meeting with a family-law attorney and a financial investigator.
The legal advice was clear.
We needed to protect the children, preserve evidence, and allow the relevant authorities to investigate the suspected financial misconduct and child neglect.
I agreed to cooperate fully.
I also arranged for Jordan to see his pediatrician.
The doctor examined him, reviewed his eating history, and documented concerns about his weight and nutrition.
Jordan was embarrassed.
"Do I have to talk about the food?""
The doctor smiled gently.
"Only if you're comfortable, Jordan. My job is to help you feel healthy and safe.""
After the appointment, we stopped at a grocery store.
Jordan walked beside me, holding a small basket.
He placed strawberries inside.
Then yogurt.
Then a box of cereal.
He paused in front of the snack aisle.
"Dad?""
"Yes?""
"Can I get these?""
He was holding a box of chocolate chip granola bars.
I looked at him.
"You don't need to ask.""
He put them in the basket.
Then he added another box.
"These are for Caleb and Mia.""
I smiled.
"Good idea.""
We returned to Renee's house.
The children were playing in the backyard.
Mia ran toward us.
"Did you bring snacks?""
Jordan held up the bags.
"Lots.""
Caleb laughed.
"You're going to make Aunt Renee's pantry explode.""
For the first time in weeks, I heard my son laugh without looking over his shoulder.
That evening, Daniel called.
"Marcus, we've reviewed the documents.""
"What did you find?""
"The proposed property lien contains several inconsistencies. The renovation invoices appear to reference work that may never have occurred.""
"And the money?""
"The transactions from Jordan's account are being investigated. We've also identified payments to Reed Family Services from another account connected to your household.""
I closed my eyes.
"How much?""
"Approximately fourteen thousand dollars so far, though the full amount may be higher.""
I gripped the phone.
"What about April 15?""
Daniel paused.
"Richard Parker has scheduled a financing appointment for that date. Based on the documents, it appears Vanessa intended to use the property as collateral.""
"Can she do that?""
"Not lawfully without the required authorization. But we need to make sure every relevant institution knows that you dispute the documents.""
I agreed to the necessary steps.
Then Daniel said something else.
"There's another issue.""
"What?""
"The guardianship document.""
I looked toward the children.
"What about it?""
"It appears to have been prepared using information from a family-court proceeding that doesn't involve you.""
I frowned.
"What proceeding?""
"Vanessa's previous divorce.""
I stared at the phone.
"Why would her divorce documents be connected to Jordan?""
"That's what we're trying to establish.""
He sent me a copy.
I opened it.
The document referred to a previous request for a change in custody arrangements involving Caleb and Mia.
But there was a handwritten attachment.
It described the children as living in a financially unstable household.
I looked at the signature.
Vanessa's.
Then I noticed the date.
It was two weeks before she married me.
She had apparently been preparing financial and family arrangements long before our wedding.
I called Daniel back.
"Does this mean she planned all of this before we married?""
"We can't establish that yet. But the timeline raises serious questions.""
I thanked him.
Then I went outside.
Jordan was sitting on the back steps with Caleb.
They were sharing a bowl of strawberries.
I sat beside them.
"Hey, boys.""
Caleb smiled.
"Jordan ate almost the whole bowl.""
Jordan looked embarrassed.
"Not the whole bowl.""
I laughed.
"That's okay.""
Then Jordan became serious.
"Dad?""
"Yes?""
"Is Mom Vanessa coming back?""
I looked toward the garden.
"She's still your mother in the way she is Caleb and Mia's mother. But the adults are going to make sure everyone is safe.""
He nodded.
Then he asked:
"Will I have to go live somewhere else?""
"No.""
"Promise?""
I took his hand.
"I promise I'll do everything I legally can to keep you safe.""
He leaned against my shoulder.
A moment later, my phone vibrated.
It was a message from Denise.
*I found something else. Vanessa has been telling Richard that you already agreed to everything. She also has a recording she plans to use against you.*
I frowned.
A second message appeared.
*She says it proves you're an unfit father.*
I looked at the screen.
Then I called Daniel.
May you like
Because whatever Vanessa had planned for April 15, she wasn't simply trying to take our money.
She was preparing to make me look like the reason my son needed to be taken away.
