Chapter 7: My Son Finally Told the Truth

“Dad, I didn't know.””

Daniel repeated the words as though saying them enough times would make them true.

I studied his face.

He looked exhausted.

His tuxedo was wrinkled, his tie hung loose, and his wedding boutonniere had fallen off.

But I couldn't bring myself to feel sorry for him.

Not yet.

“Daniel, I need you to answer one question.””

He nodded.

“Did you agree to become the trustee of our family assets?””

He opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

Michael placed the proposed trust amendment on the table.

“Your name appears here.””

Daniel looked at the document.

“I saw something like this.””

My chest tightened.

“When?””

“Who showed it to you?””

“Celeste.””

I looked at her.

She stared back without blinking.

Daniel continued.

“She said it was a standard arrangement. She told me that once Vanessa and I were married, it would make things easier for everyone.””

“Did you sign it?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

Michael leaned forward.

“Did you authorize anyone to submit it?””

Daniel hesitated.

“I signed a preliminary acknowledgment.””

Michael's expression changed.

“What exactly did you acknowledge?””

“I don't know. Celeste said it was just confirmation that I was willing to take responsibility for family investments.””

I closed my eyes.

“Daniel.””

“I know.””

“No. You don't.””

He looked at me.

“You signed a document without reading it?””

Daniel's voice cracked.

“I trusted her.””

I stared at him.

“You trusted someone you barely knew with your family's financial future, but you couldn't trust your own father enough to tell him you were in debt?””

He lowered his head.

“I was ashamed.””

Elaine sat beside me.

“Sweetheart, why didn't you come to us?””

Daniel started crying.

It wasn't a loud performance.

He simply covered his face with both hands.

“I didn't want you to see me as a failure.””

Elaine reached toward him.

Then stopped.

“Your father and I would rather help you through a failure than watch you become someone who lies to us.””

Daniel looked up.

“I know.””

“Do you?””

He nodded.

I stood and walked to the window.

Outside, the wedding guests were beginning to leave.

Some were taking flowers from the tables.

Others were whispering near the entrance.

The musicians had packed their instruments.

A celebration that had cost more than some people's annual salaries was ending in a room full of broken promises.

I turned back.

“Michael, what happens now?””

He closed the folder.

“We preserve the records, notify the bank that the disputed authorization wasn't issued by Richard or Elaine, and arrange an independent review of the trust documents. Any potential fraud should be reported through the appropriate channels.””

I nodded.

“Do it.””

Celeste stood.

“This is absurd. You're destroying two families over paperwork.””

I looked at her.

“Two families?””

She gestured toward Daniel.

“He's your son. Don't you want to protect him?””

I took a slow breath.

“I want him to become a man who doesn't need protection from the consequences of his own decisions.””

She shook her head.

“You're cruel.””

“No. I'm finished being convenient.””

Vanessa had been sitting quietly.

Now she stood.

“Mom, we need to go.””

Celeste turned.

“Don't be ridiculous.””

“I said we need to go.””

“You're not leaving me here.””

Vanessa looked at her mother.

For the first time, she seemed to understand that the woman who had always told her how to get what she wanted might have been the person who had put her in this position.

“Did you know Daniel was seeing Olivia?”” she asked.

Celeste blinked.

“What?””

“Did you know?””

“That's irrelevant.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Of course you knew.””

Daniel looked up.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa turned toward him.

“Your future mother-in-law knew you were seeing Olivia.””

Celeste's expression hardened.

“I knew you were having problems. I didn't know the details.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You told me to marry him anyway.””

Celeste sighed.

“Because you were already committed!””

“No. You told me to marry him because of his father's money.””

Celeste slapped the table.

“Don't you dare speak to me that way!””

Vanessa stared at her.

“Why? Because it's true?””

I watched the two women.

Their relationship suddenly looked very different.

Celeste had spent months acting as though she were protecting her daughter.

But every decision seemed to revolve around money and influence.

Vanessa had wanted a luxurious wedding.

Celeste had wanted access to something much larger.

And Daniel?

He had been desperate enough to listen to both of them.

I turned toward my son.

“Did you know Vanessa's company was receiving duplicate payments?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

“Did you know Celeste was trying to change the trust?””

He looked at the document.

“I knew she wanted me involved. I didn't know she was doing this.””

“Did you agree to take control of the money?””

Daniel swallowed.

“I thought I could use it to pay my debts.””

I stared at him.

There it was.

The truth.

Not the whole truth, perhaps.

But enough.

“You wanted access to the trust.””

He nodded.

“I thought I'd pay everything back before you found out.””

Elaine covered her mouth.

“Daniel…”

He looked at her.

“I'm sorry, Mom.””

She shook her head.

“You could have asked.””

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

He whispered, “Of disappointing you.””

Elaine's eyes filled.

“You disappointed me more by lying.””

He began crying again.

I wanted to comfort him.

I really did.

But love sometimes requires the hardest thing a parent can do.

Standing still while your child finally faces what he's done.

Michael received a phone call.

He stepped outside.

When he returned, his expression was serious.

“Richard, there's another development.””

I frowned.

“What now?””

“The bank has located the original submission records for the disputed trust amendment.””

“Who submitted them?””

“Celeste.””

She immediately stood.

“I did nothing wrong.””

Michael ignored her.

“The submission included a witness declaration and a supporting affidavit.””

I looked at the document.

“Whose affidavit?””

Michael turned the page.

“Daniel's.””

My son went pale.

“What?””

Michael placed it in front of him.

Daniel read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

His hands began to shake.

“This isn't what I signed.””

I looked at him.

“What do you mean?””

He pointed to a paragraph.

“It says I witnessed Elaine approving the transfer of authority.””

Elaine stepped closer.

“But I never approved anything.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I know.””

Michael examined the document.

“Then we need to determine whether the affidavit was altered after you signed the preliminary acknowledgment.””

Daniel looked at Celeste.

“You told me it was just a statement saying I was willing to help Dad.””

Celeste folded her arms.

“Perhaps you should have read what you signed.””

He stared at her.

“You said you were helping me.””

“I did help you.””

“By putting my name on this?””

She leaned toward him.

“Don't pretend you weren't interested in the money.””

Daniel went silent.

I felt a cold realization settle over me.

Celeste might have manipulated the documents.

But Daniel had still been willing to benefit from the arrangement.

And that distinction mattered.

Michael closed the folder.

“Until we establish exactly what happened, nobody should sign anything or attempt to move any funds.””

Celeste grabbed her purse.

“I'm leaving.””

Michael didn't stop her.

But as she reached the door, Vanessa spoke.

“Mom.””

Celeste turned.

Vanessa's eyes were red.

“Did you push Elaine?””

The question stunned everyone.

Celeste stared at her daughter.

“What?””

“Did you tell me to do it?””

“I told you to handle the situation.””

“You said she was interfering.””

Celeste's face hardened.

“I never told you to touch her.””

Vanessa looked toward Elaine.

Then back at her mother.

For the first time, she appeared genuinely ashamed.

And then she said something that changed the entire investigation.

“Mom, I have the original messages.””

Celeste froze.

“What messages?””

May you like

Vanessa reached into her purse.

“The ones you sent me before the wedding.””
