Chapter 6: The Photograph That Changed Everything

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Daniel stared at the photograph in my hand.

Celeste looked as though someone had pulled the floor from beneath her feet.

And Vanessa?

She slowly stepped away from her mother.

“Mom,” she whispered.

“What is that?””

Celeste didn't answer.

I examined the photograph again.

It had been taken outside First National Bank three weeks earlier. Daniel was standing beside Celeste near the entrance. She was holding a folder.

The date was printed in the corner.

October 12.

I remembered that day.

I'd been in Chicago visiting an old business partner.

Elaine had stayed home because she wasn't feeling well.

Apparently, our son had used my absence to visit a bank with his future mother-in-law.

I turned toward Daniel.

“Explain.””

He shook his head.

“Dad, it's not what you think.””

I almost laughed.

“That's becoming a familiar sentence.””

Celeste stepped forward.

“Richard, I can explain this.””

“Wonderful. Start with the fifty thousand dollars.””

She glanced at Michael.

“Perhaps we should speak privately.””

“No.””

Her lips tightened.

“I'm trying to protect everyone.””

“From what?””

She looked at Daniel.

He shook his head slightly.

But I saw it.

The silent warning.

And I realized that my son wasn't afraid of being exposed.

He was afraid of what Celeste might reveal.

Elaine approached the table.

“Daniel, I want you to look at me.””

He reluctantly turned.

“Mom.””

“Did you take that money?””

He swallowed.

“I borrowed it.””

“From whom?””

He glanced at me.

“Dad.””

I stepped closer.

“That's interesting. Because I never lent you fifty thousand dollars.””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“I was going to pay it back.””

“With what?””

He didn't answer.

Elaine's voice trembled.

“Why did you use my information?””

Daniel finally looked at her.

“Because I knew you wouldn't understand.””

My wife stared at him.

“Wouldn't understand what?””

He lowered his voice.

“I had problems.””

“What problems?””

“My company.””

I knew Daniel had started a small technology consulting business four years earlier.

I'd invested nearly two hundred thousand dollars in it.

The business had struggled, but he'd insisted things were improving.

I'd offered additional support twice.

He had refused.

Now I understood why.

“Daniel,” I said, “is your business in debt?””

He nodded.

“How much?””

He looked toward the floor.

“About three hundred and eighty thousand.””

Elaine gasped.

I gripped the edge of the table.

“Three hundred and eighty thousand dollars?””

He nodded again.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because you would have said no.””

“Would I?””

“You already thought I was irresponsible.””

I stared at him.

“I thought you were capable of making mistakes. I never thought you were incapable of telling the truth.””

Daniel's eyes filled.

“I was desperate.””

Celeste suddenly interrupted.

“He wasn't the only one.””

I turned toward her.

“What does that mean?””

She folded her arms.

“Daniel came to me because he needed help. He was embarrassed. I arranged the financial paperwork.””

Michael's expression hardened.

“Mrs. Cole, what paperwork?””

She ignored him.

“I was only trying to help my future son-in-law.””

“By using my wife's financial information?””

Celeste lifted her chin.

“Elaine was going to be part of the family anyway.””

My wife stared at her.

“That doesn't give you permission to use my name.””

Celeste rolled her eyes.

“Oh, please. You and Richard have more money than you could ever spend.””

Elaine stepped forward.

“Money isn't the point.””

Celeste laughed.

“Then what is?””

“Trust.””

The single word seemed to silence the room.

Elaine continued.

“You came into our home. You ate at our table. I trusted you with my family.””

Celeste looked away.

My wife shook her head.

“And you used that trust to steal from us.””

“Watch your words.””

“No,” Elaine said.

“You watch yours.””

I'd never heard my wife speak like that.

Even Vanessa looked surprised.

Michael asked the wedding planner to secure a private room.

We moved into a small conference suite adjoining the ballroom.

Daniel followed reluctantly.

Vanessa came too.

Celeste tried to leave, but Michael calmly informed her that he would need her cooperation in preserving the relevant documents and communications.

She didn't look pleased.

Once the door closed, Michael placed the photograph beside the bank statement.

“Let's establish exactly what happened.””

Daniel sat down.

His hands were shaking.

Michael asked him several questions about the business debt.

The answers came slowly.

Daniel's company had lost two major clients. He'd borrowed money to cover payroll. Then he'd taken out additional loans to keep the business operating.

Eventually, the debt had become impossible to manage.

“Why didn't you tell your father?”” Michael asked.

Daniel looked at me.

“Because I didn't want him thinking I'd failed.””

I stared at him.

“Failing in business isn't a crime, Daniel.””

He looked down.

“Using your mother's information without permission is different,” Michael added.

Daniel nodded.

Celeste suddenly leaned forward.

“Let's not pretend I forced him to do anything. Daniel came to me.””

Michael turned toward her.

“Did you submit the authorization bearing Richard's signature?””

“No.””

“Did you prepare the documents?””

“I helped organize them.””

“Did you witness Elaine's signature on the account application?””

Celeste hesitated.

“I don't remember.””

Elaine stared at her.

“You were there?””

Celeste shrugged.

“I was helping.””

My wife looked at Michael.

“I never signed anything.””

Michael nodded.

“That's consistent with what we've seen so far.””

Then he opened another folder.

“This is the part that concerns me most.””

He placed a printed transaction record on the table.

The fifty thousand dollars had been transferred through an account registered to a company called Bennett Family Holdings.

That company was legitimate.

I'd established it years earlier to manage several commercial properties.

But the account number on the transaction record was unfamiliar.

Michael explained that someone had created a secondary account using documents connected to the family trust.

The bank had flagged the transaction.

The money had been frozen before the transfer could be completed.

I stared at the document.

“So nobody actually received the fifty thousand?””

“Not yet,” Michael said.

“But the attempt was serious.””

Daniel looked relieved.

I wasn't.

Because there was still one question.

“Who created the account?””

Michael turned toward Celeste.

She stared at the table.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“Mom, tell them.””

Celeste looked up sharply.

“Be quiet.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You told me everything was going to be fine.””

“Vanessa!””

“You said Richard would never discover it!””

The room went silent.

Daniel slowly turned toward her.

“What did you just say?””

Vanessa looked at him.

Then at her mother.

Her face crumpled.

“I'm sorry.””

I leaned forward.

“Sorry for what?””

She looked at Daniel.

“Your mother wasn't the only person we needed out of the way.””

Elaine's fingers tightened around mine.

I felt my stomach drop.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa wiped her cheek.

“Celeste wanted control of the family trust.””

Daniel stood abruptly.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“She said once we were married, you could convince your father to transfer management to you.””

I turned toward my son.

“Did you know about this?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

Celeste slammed her palm against the table.

“That's enough!””

Vanessa flinched.

But she continued.

“She told me Elaine was the only person who could stop it because she had equal authority over certain family decisions.””

I looked at Michael.

He nodded slowly.

“That would explain the attempt to use Elaine's identity.””

Then he turned another page.

And read something that made even Celeste go pale.

“The trust document submitted to the bank lists a proposed change in trusteeship.””

I frowned.

“Who was supposed to become the new trustee?””

Michael looked directly at me.

“Daniel Bennett.””

My son slowly sat back down.

May you like

And for the first time that day, I wondered whether he had been a victim of Celeste's plan.

Or one of its architects.
