Chapter 4: The Signature That Wasn't Mine

I stared at the document.

For several seconds, I couldn't make sense of what I was seeing.

My name was printed at the top.

My address was correct.

Even my old business registration number appeared in the identification section.

But the signature at the bottom was not mine.

“Michael,” I said quietly, “where did you get this?””

He placed his briefcase on the table.

“It was submitted to First National Bank three months ago. The bank contacted our office after identifying inconsistencies in the supporting documents.””

I looked at the signature again.

“What does it authorize?””

“Access to certain business accounts and permission to initiate transfers up to a specified amount.””

“How much?””

Michael hesitated.

“Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.””

Elaine grabbed my arm.

“Richard?””

I looked at her.

“I'm fine.””

But I wasn't.

I had spent decades building my business from the ground up.

I knew exactly how dangerous a forged financial authorization could be.

“Did the bank approve it?”” I asked.

“No. The authorization was flagged and suspended pending verification.””

I breathed out slowly.

“Who submitted it?””

Michael looked at the document.

“Daniel Bennett.””

The name sounded foreign coming from his mouth.

I turned toward my son.

He was still standing near the stage.

Vanessa was speaking to him, but he wasn't listening.

“Daniel!””

He looked up.

“Come here.””

He approached slowly.

“What?””

I held out the document.

“Have you seen this?””

His expression changed.

He glanced at the page.

Then at Michael.

“Where did you get that?””

“That's not an answer,” I said.

Daniel rubbed the back of his neck.

“Dad, I can explain.””

“Good. Explain.””

He looked around.

“Not here.””

I pointed toward the room.

“Your wedding guests have already seen your bride's photographs. I don't think privacy is a concern anymore.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

He took the document.

For a moment, he studied it.

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

“I thought you approved it.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“The authorization.””

“I never signed it.””

He looked toward Vanessa.

“She told me you had.””

Vanessa's head snapped around.

“Daniel!””

I turned toward her.

“What did you tell him?””

She stepped forward.

“Nothing. He's trying to blame me.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You said your mother had arranged everything.””

Celeste suddenly moved toward us.

“That's enough. We're leaving.””

Michael raised one hand.

“Mrs. Cole, please don't interfere.””

Celeste glared at him.

“Who do you think you are?””

“Richard Bennett's attorney.””

She looked at me.

“You brought a lawyer to your son's wedding?””

I answered calmly.

“I brought the man who has been helping me investigate financial irregularities.””

Her expression changed.

Vanessa stared at the document.

“What irregularities?””

I opened the folder.

“Payments made through your company. Duplicate invoices. A forged authorization. And a series of transfers that don't match any legitimate wedding expense.””

Daniel's face drained of color.

“Transfers?””

Michael opened his briefcase again.

“We have a preliminary transaction report.””

He placed several pages on the table.

I scanned the figures.

Twenty-two thousand dollars.

Thirty-five thousand.

Forty-one thousand.

The amounts had been transferred from an account connected to the wedding budget into a separate business account.

The recipient was Vantage Event Solutions.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You told me these were vendor payments.””

“They were!””

“Monica says her company never received them.””

“Then Monica is lying!””

Michael calmly interrupted.

“The bank records show the money entered an account controlled by Vantage Event Solutions. We have confirmation of that account's registered ownership.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“So what? It's my company.””

“Then why did you submit invoices showing that the money was payable to unrelated vendors?””

She didn't answer.

Daniel picked up the pages.

His hands were shaking.

“Dad, I didn't know about this.””

I looked at him.

“Did you know about the company?””

He nodded slowly.

“She told me she was starting an event business.””

“When?””

“Last year.””

“Did you know she was receiving money from the wedding account?””

“No.””

Vanessa laughed.

“Don't pretend you didn't know!””

Daniel turned toward her.

“What are you talking about?””

“You told me to move the money before your father started asking questions!””

The room went still.

Daniel looked horrified.

“I never said that!””

“You said you needed money to cover your business debts!””

“Not like this!””

Michael quietly took out a small notebook.

“Mrs. Cole, I would advise you to be careful about making further statements until you have spoken with your own attorney.””

Celeste stepped forward.

“This is harassment.””

Michael didn't respond.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You have two choices. Explain what happened, or let the appropriate people investigate it.””

She shook her head.

“You can't threaten me.””

“I'm not threatening you.””

I placed the document on the table.

“I'm protecting myself and my wife.””

An hour earlier, I'd believed my biggest problem was that my son had chosen a woman who didn't respect his parents.

Now I was looking at evidence that someone had attempted to use my identity to gain access to my money.

And the people involved were standing in front of me.

Daniel moved closer.

“Dad, please. Don't call the police.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

“Because this could ruin everything.””

“Whose everything?””

He looked down.

“Mine.””

I felt a strange emptiness.

“Your mother was shoved into the mud today. Your bride is accusing you of cheating. And now there's a forged financial document carrying my name.””

He swallowed.

“I'm asking you as your son.””

I shook my head.

“You're asking me as someone who expects me to clean up another mess.””

He looked wounded.

But for the first time, I didn't rush to comfort him.

Elaine approached.

“Daniel,” she said softly.

He turned toward her.

“Mom.””

She looked at the document.

“Did you forge your father's signature?””

“No!””

“Did you know someone else had done it?””

He hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

Elaine's face crumpled.

“Oh, Daniel.””

He stepped toward her.

“Mom, listen—”

She raised her hand.

“Don't.””

He stopped.

She wiped her eyes.

“I taught you to tell the truth, even when it was difficult. I taught you to return what wasn't yours. I taught you that a person's character matters more than what they own.””

Her voice broke.

“And today, you let me lie in the mud because you didn't want to upset your bride.””

Daniel looked at the floor.

Elaine took a slow breath.

“I don't know who you've become.””

He whispered, “I'm sorry.””

But she turned away.

Michael gathered the papers.

“Richard, there's one more thing you need to see.””

He opened the final section of the folder.

It contained a printed email.

The subject line read:

*BENNETT FAMILY ASSET ACCESS — FINAL APPROVAL*

I recognized the sender.

Vanessa Cole.

But the recipient's name made my hands go cold.

Celeste Cole.

And the first sentence read:

Once the wedding is complete, Daniel will have no choice but to cooperate.

I looked at Michael.

“What does this mean?””

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he turned the page.

There was another email.

This one had been sent the previous night.

The subject line was:

*Elaine Bennett — The Remaining Obstacle.*
